सामान्यमेव युष्माकमस्माकं च फलं त्विति
The result shall be common to both you and us.
तत्पानाद्बलिनो यूयममर्त्याश्च भविष्यथ
By drinking it, you will become strong and immortal.
केवलं क्लेशवन्तश्च करिष्यामि तथा ह्यहम्
I will ensure that only hardship falls upon them.
नानाविधौषधिगणं समानीय सुरासुराः
The gods and asuras gathered various kinds of medicinal herbs.
प्रारेभिरे प्रयत्नेन मन्थितुं यादसां पतिम्
With effort, they began to churn the lord of the waters.
शिरोभागे तु दैतेया नियुक्तास्तत्र शौरिणा
The daityas were assigned to the head side there by the mighty one.
निर्दग्धवपुषः सर्वे निस्तेजस्कास्तदाभवन्
All became scorched and devoid of energy.
अनुकूलेन वातेन विष्णुना प्रेरितेन तु
By a favorable wind sent forth by Vishnu,
भ्रमतो मन्दराद्रेस्तु तस्या धिष्टानतामगात्
As Mandara mountain spun, it reached its proper position.
चकर्ष वासुकिं वेगाद्दैत्यमध्ये परेण च
Vasuki was dragged swiftly among the daityas by one side.
अपरेण च देवर्षिर्महता तेजसा मुहुः
By another side, the divine sage repeatedly exerted great energy.
तेजसा पुनरन्येन बलात्कारसहेन सः
Again, by another's energy, with irresistible force, he acted.
मथ्यमाने ततस्तस्मिन्क्षीरब्धौ देवदानवैः
Then, as the gods and the demons churned that ocean of milk,
मुदं जग्मुस्तदा देवा दैतेयाश्च तपोधन
At that time, O treasure of austerity, the gods and the Daityas became joyful.
किमेतदिति सिद्धानां दिवि चिन्तयतां तदा
Then, as the Siddhas in heaven wondered, 'What is this?'
असुराणां पुरस्तात्सा स्मयमाना व्यतिष्ठत
Before the Asuras, she stood there, smiling.
सुरा न विद्यते येषां तेनैवासुरशब्दिताः
Those who do not possess the nectar are therefore called 'Asuras.'
सुराग्रहणतो ऽप्येते सुरशब्देन कीर्तिताः
And those who have obtained the nectar are praised by the name 'Sura.'
आविरासीत्सुंगधेन परितो वासयञ्जगत्
A fragrance arose, pervading the worlds with its sweet scent.
आविर्भूताश्च देवर्षे सर्वलोकमनोहराः
And, O sage among the gods, beings enchanting to all the worlds appeared.
विषजातं तदुत्पन्नं जगृहुर्नागजातयः
The serpent races seized the poison that had arisen and been produced.
विजया नाम संजज्ञे भैरवस्तामुपाददे
A being named Vijaya was born, and Bhairava took her up.
उपस्थितः करे बिभ्रदमृताढ्यं कमण्डलुम्
He appeared, holding in his hand a water-pot filled with nectar.
मुनयश्चाभवंस्तुष्टास्तदानीं तपसां निधे
And the sages, O treasure of austerity, became satisfied at that time.
उत्थिता पद्महस्ता श्रीस्तस्मात्क्षीरमहार्मवात्
From that great ocean of milk, Śrī arose, holding a lotus in her hand.
तुष्टुवुस्तुष्ट हृदया गन्धर्वाश्च जगुः परम्
With hearts full of joy, they praised her, and the Gandharvas sang most excellently.
गङ्गाद्याः पुण्यनद्यश्च स्नानार्थमुपतस्थिरे
The sacred rivers, beginning with Gaṅgā, approached for her bathing.
आदाय स्नापयाञ्चक्रुस्तां श्रियं पद्मवासिनीम्
Taking water, they bathed Śrī, the one who dwells in the lotus.
पद्ममालां ददौ तस्यै मूर्तिमान्क्षीरसागरः
The embodied Ocean of Milk gave her a garland of lotuses.
ययौ वक्षस्थलं विष्णोः सर्वेषां पश्यतां रमा
Rama went to the chest of Viṣṇu, as all looked on.
