गुरुस्त्रीसंगमे तद्वद्गुरवो बहवः स्मृताः
Likewise, in union with the wife of the teacher, many teachers are remembered.
एकेन वक्ष्यते येन स महागुरुरुच्यते
He who is mentioned by one alone is called the great teacher.
आचार्यः स तु विज्ञेयस्तदेकैकास्तु देशिकाः
He is to be understood as the preceptor; the others are each instructors.
द्वादशाब्दं चरेत्कृच्छ३मेकैकं तु षडब्दतः
One should perform the penance for twelve years; for each, six years.
ब्राह्मणस्तु सजातीयां प्रमदां यदि गच्छति
If a Brahmin goes to a woman of his own caste,
कुलटां तु सजातीयां त्रिरात्रेण विशुध्यति
He is purified from union with a wanton woman of his own caste in three nights.
चक्रीकिरातकैवर्तकर्मकारादियोषितः
A woman of the wheel-maker, hunter, ferryman, artisan, and others.
अनन्त्यजां ब्राह्मणो गत्वा प्रमादादब्दतः शुचिः
If a Brahmin, through negligence, goes to a woman of endless birth, he becomes pure after six years.
दासी चतुर्विधा प्रोक्ता द्वे चाद्ये क्षत्रियासमे
A slave woman is said to be of four kinds; the first two are equal to a Kshatriya.
आत्मदासीं द्विजो मोहादुक्तार्थे दोषमाप्नुयात्
If a twice-born, out of delusion, goes to his own slave woman, he incurs the fault as stated.
द्विगुणेन परां नारीं चतुर्भिः क्षत्रियाङ्गनाम्
For another woman, double; for a Kshatriya woman, fourfold.
द्वात्रिंशता संकरजां वेश्यां शूद्रामिवाचरेत्
He should perform penance for thirty-two years for a prostitute born of mixed castes, as for a Shudra woman.
स्नात्वान्यवस्त्रसंयुक्तमुक्तार्थेनैव शुध्यति
After bathing, wearing new clothes, and with the prescribed act, he is purified.
तथैवान्याङ्गनां गत्वा तदुक्तार्थं समाचरेत्
Likewise, having gone to another woman, he should perform the prescribed act.
त्रिरात्रोपोषणाच्छुद्धिस्तामेवोद्वाहयेत्तदा
By fasting for three nights, she becomes purified; then she may be given in marriage.
पित्रोरनुज्ञया पाददिनार्धेन विशुध्यति
With the permission of her parents, she is purified in half a day.
वृषलः स तु विज्ञेयः सर्वकर्मबहिष्कृतः
He should be understood as an outcaste, excluded from all rites.
विधवा जायते नेयं पूर्वगन्तारमाप्नुयात्
A widow is born; she must not approach her former husband.
त्यागकर्माणि कुर्वीत श्रौतस्मार्तादिकानि च
She should perform acts of renunciation, both Vedic and Smārta and others.
भोगेच्छोः साधनं सा तु न येग्याखिलकर्मसु
That is a means for the desire for enjoyment, but not for all sacrificial acts.
पञ्चभूतात्मकं प्रोक्तं चतुर्वासनयान्वितम्
It is said to be composed of the five elements, endowed with four kinds of desires.
आहारेण विना जन्तुर्नाहारो मदनात्स्मृतः
Without food, a creature cannot exist; food is said to be born of desire.
पुन्नारीरूपवत्कृत्वा मदननेनैव विश्वसृक्
Having assumed the form of man and woman, the Creator, through desire, brings forth the world.
तत्प्रवृत्त्या प्रवर्तन्ते तन्निवृत्त्याक्षयां गतिम्
By that activity, beings proceed; by its cessation, they attain the imperishable state.
तद्रहस्यं तदोपायं शृणु वक्ष्यामि सांप्रतम्
Now listen, I will tell you that secret and its means.
इयं हि मूलप्रकृतिर्लक्ष्मीः सर्वजगत्प्रसूः
This Lakṣmī is indeed the primal nature, the mother of all the worlds.
एवं मन्त्रानुभावात्स्यान्मथनं क्रियते यदि
Thus, if union is performed by the power of mantra,
तावुभौ मन्त्रकर्माणौ न दोषो विद्यते तयोः
For those two, engaged in the rite with mantra, there is no fault.
स्वस्त्रीविषय एवेदं तयोरपि विधेर्बलात्
This pertains only to one's own wife, even for those two, by the force of injunction.
तयोरपि मनाक्चेन्न निषिद्धदिवसेष्वघम्
Even for those two, if only a little, there is no sin on forbidden days.
