विमुक्तस्तेयदोषेण स्वशरीरमवाप सः
Freed from the fault of theft, he regained his own body.
अन्ये तद्द्रव्यवन्तो ऽपि कालधर्ममुपागताः
Even others who possessed that wealth met the fate ordained by time.
यमस्तु तान्समाहूय वाक्यं चैतदुवाच ह
Yama summoned them and spoke these words.
किमिच्छथ फलं भोक्तुं दुष्कृतस्य शुभस्य वा
What fruit do you wish to enjoy—of evil deeds or of good?
सुकृतस्य फलं त्वादौ पश्चात्पापस्य भुज्यते
The fruit of good deeds is enjoyed first, and afterwards that of sin.
एतस्यैव बलात्सर्वे त्रिदिवं गच्छत द्रुतम्
By the force of his merit, all of you quickly go to heaven.
यथोचितफलोपेतास्त्रिदिवं जग्मुरञ्जसा
Endowed with the appropriate results, they swiftly went to heaven.
गाणपत्यमनुप्राप्य कैलासे ऽद्यापि मोदते
Having attained the favor of Gaṇapati, he still rejoices on Kailāsa today.
सेतुबन्धादिकानां च पुण्यानां पुण्यवर्धनम्
The merit of holy acts such as building causeways is increased in merit.
वज्रः प्राप्य तदर्धं तु तदर्धेन युताः परे
Vajra receives half of that, and others, joined with that half, receive less.
विनश्येत्तेन तेनैव कृतैस्तत्परिहारकैः
By that very act, what was done is destroyed, along with its remedies.
अन्नं दोषकरं किं तु तन्मे विस्तरतो वद
But tell me in detail about food that causes fault.
क्रमान्न्यूनतरं पापं तदर्द्धार्द्धार्द्धतस्तथा
The sin is gradually less, being half, then a quarter, and so on.
स्त्रीणामपि तृतीयादि पेयं स्याद्ब्राह्मणीं विना
For women too, from the third portion onward, it may be drunk, except for a Brahmin woman.
अभर्तृसन्निधौ नारी मद्यं पिबति लोलुपा
A woman greedy for wine drinks it in the absence of her husband.
उन्मादिनीति साख्याता तां त्यजेदन्त्यजामिव
She is declared insane; one should shun her as an outcaste.
स्त्रीणां मद्यं तदर्द्धं स्यात्पादं स्याद्भर्तृसङ्गमे
For women, the portion of wine is half; a quarter when with the husband.
जपेच्चायुतगायत्रीं जातवेदसमेव वा
One should recite ten thousand Gayatri mantras, or the same number of Jatavedas.
क्षत्रियो ऽपि त्रिवर्णानां द्विजादर्धोर्ऽधतः क्रमात्
Even a Kshatriya, among the three twice-born classes, should do half or a quarter in order.
अन्तर्जले सहस्रं वा जपेच्छुद्धिमवाप्नुयात्
Reciting a thousand times in water, one attains purification.
भैरवो भैरवी काली महाशास्त्री च मातरः
Bhairava, Bhairavi, Kali, and Mahashastri are the Mothers.
ब्राह्मणस्तु विना तेन यजेद्वेदाङ्गपारगः
But a Brahmin, learned in the Vedas, should perform sacrifice without that.
तासां प्रवाहा गच्छन्ति निर्लेपास्ते परां गतिम्
Their streams flow on, untouched, attaining the supreme state.
प्रायश्चित्तमिदं प्रोक्तं पराशक्तेः पदस्मृतिः
This expiation is declared: remembrance of the supreme Shakti's abode.
रौरवे नरके ऽब्दं तु निवसेद्ब्रिन्दुसंख्यया
In the Raurava hell, one dwells for a year, according to the number of drops.
प्रायश्चितं न चैवास्य शिलाग्निपतनादृते
There is no expiation for him except falling upon stone or into fire.
अनुग्रहाच्च महतामनुतापाच्च कर्मणः
Through the favor of the great and by remorse for the deed.
शुद्ध्येच्च ब्राह्मणो दोषाद्द्विगुणाद्बुद्धिपूर्वतः
And for purification, a Brahmin, due to fault and with double effort, acts with discernment.
एतन्मे मुनिशार्दूल विस्तराद्वक्तुमर्हसि
O foremost among sages, you ought to explain this to me in detail.
मातुलस्य प्रिया चेति गत्वेमा नास्ति निष्कृतिः
If one goes to the beloved of the maternal uncle, there is no expiation for this.
