कुरुष्वैतेन तस्मात्त्वं वापीकूपादिकाञ्छुभान्
Therefore, by means of this, you should make wells, ponds, and other auspicious things.
बहूदकसमं देशं तत्र तत्र व्यलोकयत्
He surveyed places with abundant water, here and there.
सुबहुद्रव्यसं साध्यं तटाकं चाक्षयोदकम्
A reservoir was constructed with great expense, its water inexhaustible.
असंबूर्णं तु तत्कर्म दृष्ट्वा चिन्ताकुलो ऽभवत्
But seeing that work incomplete, he became troubled with anxiety.
तेनैव बहुधा क्षिप्तं धनं भूरि महीतले
By him, much wealth was cast in many ways upon the earth.
इति निश्चित्य मनसा तेनाज्ञातस्तमन्वगात्
Having resolved thus in his mind, he secretly followed him.
मध्ये जलावृतस्तेन प्रासादश्चापि शार्ङ्गिणः
There, encircled by water, he built a palace for Śārṅgin.
सेतुमध्ये चकारासौ शङ्करायतनं महत्
In the middle of the causeway, he constructed a great shrine to Śaṅkara.
तेनाग्र्याणि महार्हाणि क्षेत्राण्यपि चकार सः
He also established the finest and most valuable fields.
ब्राह्मणांश्च समामन्त्र्य देवव्रातमुखान्बहून्
He summoned many brāhmaṇas, foremost among the hosts of gods.
क्व चाहं वीरदत्ताख्यः किरातः काष्ठविक्रयी
Where am I, a Kirāta named Vīradatta, a seller of wood?
क्व वा क्षेत्राणि कॢप्तानि ब्राह्मणायतनानि च
And where are these established fields and sanctuaries for brāhmaṇas?
प्रतिगृह्य तथैवैतद्देवव्रातमुखा द्विजाः
Having accepted all this, the brāhmaṇas, leaders of the divine hosts,
चक्रुः संतुष्टमनसो महात्मानो महौजसः
Being great-souled and mighty, they acted with satisfied minds.
तत्रैव वसतिं चक्रे मुदितो भार्यया सह
There itself, he joyfully made his dwelling with his wife.
नाम चक्रे पुरस्यास्य तोष यन्नखिलान्द्विजान्
He named that city Toṣa, for it pleased all the brāhmaṇas.
यमस्य ब्रह्मणो विष्णोर्दूता रुद्रस्य चागताः
Messengers of Yama, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Rudra arrived there.
अत्रान्तरे समागत्य नारदो मुनिरब्रवीत्
Meanwhile, the sage Nārada came and spoke.
अयं किरातश्चैर्येण सेतुबन्धं पुराकरोत्
This Kirāta once built the causeway by theft.
स बहुभ्यो हरेद्द्रव्यं तेषां यावत्तथा मृतिः
He took wealth from many until their death.
चचार द्वादशाब्दं तु वायुभूतोंऽतरिक्षगः
He wandered for twelve years as one with the wind, moving through the sky.
त्वया कृतेन पुण्येन ब्रह्मलोकमितो व्रज
Because of the meritorious act you have performed, go from here to the world of Brahma.
निर्वेदं परमापन्ना मुनिमेवमभाषत
Having attained supreme detachment, the sage spoke thus.
हहैवास्ते पतिर्यावत्स्वदेहं लभते तथा
He remains here until the lord regains his own body, just so.
परिहारो ऽथवा किं तु मया कार्यस्तु तेन वा
Or else, what remedy should be undertaken by me or by him?
भोगात्मकं शरीरं तु कर्म कार्यकरं तव
Your body, composed of enjoyment, is the instrument for performing action.
निराहारो महातीर्थेस्नात्वा नित्यं हि सांबिकम्
Fasting, bathing daily at the great sacred place, always devoted to Śambhu—
ध्यात्वा हृदि महेशानं शतरुद्रमनुं जपेत्
Meditating in the heart on the Lord of great beings, one should recite the Śatarudra hymn.
पापैरन्यैश्च सकलैर्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
By this, one is freed from all other sins—there is no doubt about this.
अनुगृह्येति तां नारीं तत्रैवान्तर्द्धिमागमत्
Saying 'I have blessed you,' he became invisible right there.
