इत्येते चाग्नयः प्रोक्ताः प्रणीयन्तेध्वरेषु वै
Thus, these fires are declared, who are led forth in the sacrifices.
स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे पूर्वमग्नयस्तेभिमानिनः
In the previous Svāyambhuva Manvantara, those fires were their presiding deities.
स्थानाभिमानिनो लोके प्रागासन्हव्यवाहनाः
In the world, the presiding deities of the places were formerly the carriers of oblations.
पूर्वमन्वतंरे ऽतीताः शुकैर्यागैश्च तैः सह
In the previous Manvantara, those who have passed away, along with their pure sacrifices, existed.
इत्येतानि मजोक्तानि स्थानानि स्थानिनश्च ह
Thus these places and their presiding deities have been declared by me.
सन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु लक्षणं जातवेदसाम्
In all the manvantaras, the characteristics of the Jātavedas are the same.
प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे ज्योतिष्मन्तश्च ते स्मृताः
All the lords of beings are said to be radiant.
मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु नामरूपप्रयोजनैः
In all the manvantaras, with their respective names, forms, and functions.
अनागतैः सुरैः सार्द्धं वर्त्स्यन्ते ऽनागताग्नयः
In the future, the yet-unborn fires will exist together with the yet-unborn gods.
विस्तरेणानुपुर्व्या च पितॄणां वक्ष्यते पुनः
The succession of the Pitṛs will again be described in detail and order.
गात्रेभ्यो जज्ञिरे तस्य मनुष्यासुरदेवताः
From his limbs were born humans, asuras, and gods.
तेषां निसर्गः प्रागुक्तः समासाच्छ्रुयतां पुनः
Their nature was previously stated; now hear it again in summary.
पितृवन्मन्यमाना वै जज्ञिरे ऽस्योपपक्षतः
Those who considered themselves Pitṛs were born from his side.
ऋतवः पितरो देवा इत्येषा वैदिकी श्रुतिः
The Ṛtus, Pitṛs, and gods—this is the Vedic teaching.
एते स्वायंभुवे पूर्वमुत्पन्नाश्चान्तरे शुभे
These were born in the former Svāyambhuva Manvantara and in the auspicious interval.
अयज्वानस्तथा तेषामासन्ये गृहमेधिनः
Among them, some were householders who did not perform sacrifices.
यज्वानस्तेषु ये त्वासन्पितरः सोमपीथिनः
Among them, those who were sacrificers were Pitṛs who drank Soma.
ऋतवः पितरो देवाः शास्त्रे ऽस्मिन्निश्चयं गताः
The Ṛtus, Pitṛs, and gods have attained certainty in this scripture.
नभाश्चैव नभस्यश्च जीवावेतापुदात्दृतौ
Nabhas and Nabhasyas, living beings, were produced from the Apudātdṛta.
सहश्चैव सहस्यश्च घोरावेतापुदात्दृतौ
Saha and Sahasyas, the terrible ones, were produced from the Apudātdṛta.
कालावस्थासु षट्स्वेते मासाख्या वै व्यवस्थिताः
In the six divisions of time called months, these are established.
ऋतवो ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा विज्ञेयास्ते ऽभिमानिनः
The Ṛtus are to be known as the sons of Brahmā, and they are possessors of self-identity.
स्थानानां व्यतिरेकेण ज्ञेयाः स्थानागिमानिनः
Apart from the places themselves, those who preside over the places should be understood.
संवत्सराश्च स्थानानि कामाख्या ह्यभिमानिनाम्
The years, too, are places, belonging to those who are proud of their domains.
तत्सतत्त्वास्तदात्मानस्तान्वक्ष्यामि निबोधत
I shall now declare to you their true nature and essence; listen attentively.
निमेषाश्च कलाः कष्ठा मुहुर्त्ता दिवसाः क्षयाः
Moments, kalās, kaṣṭhās, muhūrtas, days, and nights—
ऋतुत्रयं चाप्ययनं द्वे ऽयने दक्षिणोत्तरे
The three seasons, the solstices, and the two ayanas—southern and northern—
ऋतवस्तु निमेः पुत्रा विज्ञेयास्ते तथैव षट्
The seasons are to be known as the offspring of the moment; thus, there are six.
यस्माच्चैवार्त्तवेभ्यस्तु जायन्ते स्थाणु जङ्गमाः
And from these very seasons, all stationary and moving beings are born.
समेतास्तु प्रसूयन्ते प्रजाश्चैव प्रजापतेः
When united, they produce offspring—the creatures of Prajāpati.
