विश्वव्यचाः समुद्रो ऽग्निर्ब्रह्मस्थाने स कीर्त्यते
Viśvavyacā, the oceanic fire, is renowned as being in the place of Brahman.
अचौकपादुपस्थो यः स वै शालासुखीयकः
He who is without a householder, who is seated nearby, is called Śālāsukhīyaka.
शंस्यस्यैते सुताः सर्वे उपस्थेया द्विजैः स्मृताः
All these sons of Śaṃsi are remembered by the twice-born as those to be placed nearby.
विभुः प्रवाहणो ऽग्नीध्रस्तेषां धिष्ण्यस्तथा परे
Vibhu, Pravāhaṇa, and Agnīdhra are among them; likewise, another is the dhiṣṇya.
होत्रीयस्तु स्मृते ह्यग्निर्वह्निर्यो हव्यवाहनः
The fire called Hotrī is remembered, indeed, as the fire that bears the oblation.
ततो ऽग्निर्वैश्वदेवस्तु ब्राह्मणाच्छंसिरुच्यते
Then the Vaiśvadeva fire is called the Brāhmaṇa and the Śaṃsir.
आवारिरग्निर्वाभारिर्वैष्ठीयः स विभाव्यते
The fire called Āvāri, or Vābhāri, belonging to Vaiṣṭhīya, is to be understood as such.
अष्टमः सुध्युरग्निर्योमार्जालीयः स उच्यन्ते
The eighth, Sudhyu, is the fire called Agni, associated with Yomārjālīya, so it is said.
अपां योनिः स्मृतो ऽसौ स ह्यप्सुनामा विभाव्यते
He is known as the origin of waters, and is recognized by the name Apsunāma.
अग्निः सो ऽवभृथे ज्ञेयो वरुणेन सहेज्यते
That Agni is to be known in the Avabhṛtha rite, and is worshipped together with Varuṇa.
मृत्युमाञ् जाठरस्याग्नेर्विद्वानाग्निः सुतः स्मृतः
The wise know that the fire in the stomach, possessing death, is called the son of Agni.
पुत्रस्त्वग्नेर्मन्युमतो घोरः संवर्तकः स्मृतः
The dreadful Saṃvartaka is remembered as the son of Agni named Manyumat.
समुद्रवासिनः पुत्रः साहरक्षो विभाव्यते
The son of the ocean-dweller, together with the demons, is to be understood as such.
क्रव्यादग्निः सुतस्तस्य पुरुषानत्ति यो मृतान्
His son is the flesh-eating fire, who consumes dead men.
ततः शुचिस्तु वै सौरो गन्धर्वैरायुराहुतः
Then, the pure one, indeed solar, is called Āyur by the Gandharvas.
आयुर्नाम्ना तु भगवानसौ यस्तु प्रणीयते
By the name Āyus, the blessed one is he who is led forth.
पाकयज्ञेष्वभीमानी सोग्निस्तु सहसः स्मृतः
In the Pākayajñas, the presiding fire is called Sahas.
विविधिश्चाद्भुतस्यापि पुत्रो ऽग्नेस्तुमाहान्स्मृतः
Vividhi is also said to be the son of the wondrous fire.
विविधेस्तु सुतो ह्यर्क्क स्तस्य चाग्नेः सुता इमे
Of Vividhi, the son is Arka; these are the sons of Agni.
सुरभिर्वसुरन्नादो प्रविष्टो यः स रुकमराट्
Surabhi, Vasurannāda, and Praviṣṭa—he who is Rukamarāṭ—are known thus.
इत्येते चाग्नयः प्रोक्ताः प्रणीयन्तेध्वरेषु वै
Thus, these fires are declared, who are led forth in the sacrifices.
स्वायंभुवे ऽन्तरे पूर्वमग्नयस्तेभिमानिनः
In the previous Svāyambhuva Manvantara, those fires were their presiding deities.
स्थानाभिमानिनो लोके प्रागासन्हव्यवाहनाः
In the world, the presiding deities of the places were formerly the carriers of oblations.
पूर्वमन्वतंरे ऽतीताः शुकैर्यागैश्च तैः सह
In the previous Manvantara, those who have passed away, along with their pure sacrifices, existed.
इत्येतानि मजोक्तानि स्थानानि स्थानिनश्च ह
Thus these places and their presiding deities have been declared by me.
सन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु लक्षणं जातवेदसाम्
In all the manvantaras, the characteristics of the Jātavedas are the same.
प्रजानां पतयः सर्वे ज्योतिष्मन्तश्च ते स्मृताः
All the lords of beings are said to be radiant.
मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु नामरूपप्रयोजनैः
In all the manvantaras, with their respective names, forms, and functions.
अनागतैः सुरैः सार्द्धं वर्त्स्यन्ते ऽनागताग्नयः
In the future, the yet-unborn fires will exist together with the yet-unborn gods.
विस्तरेणानुपुर्व्या च पितॄणां वक्ष्यते पुनः
The succession of the Pitṛs will again be described in detail and order.
