रङ्गोपजीवको विप्रः शाकनिर्ग्रामयाजकः
A Brahmin who lives by the stage, who sells vegetables, or who performs village sacrifices.
सुरापो मासभक्षश्च तथा च पशुघातकः
One who drinks liquor, eats meat, and kills animals.
पर्वकारश्च मूची च यश्च स्यान्मित्रघातकः
One who makes offerings on festival days, one who is a mute, and one who kills a friend.
उपविष्टं भोक्तुमथ पङ्क्त्यां वै वञ्चयन्ति ये
Those who deceive others while eating together in a row.
मृषावादी नरो यश्च तथा प्राक्रोशको ऽशुभः
A man who speaks falsely, and likewise one who shouts abusively, is inauspicious.
मधुग्राहाभिहन्तारो यान्ति वैतग्णीं नराः
Those who destroy beehives and honeycombs go to the Vaitaraṇī river.
क्रोधना दुःखदा ये च कुहकाः कृष्णगामिनः
Those who are angry, who cause suffering, who are deceitful, and who walk in darkness—
कर्त्तनषु विकृत्यन्त मृगव्याधः सुदारुणैः
Hunters who kill animals with cruel acts are tormented in the places of cutting.
भक्ष्यन्ते श्यामशबलैरयस्तुडश्व वायसैः
They are devoured by black and spotted iron-beaked crows and dogs.
स्कन्दन्ते ये दिवास्वप्ने व्रतिनो ब्रह्मचारिणः
Those who, while observing vows or celibacy, emit semen during the day or in sleep—
ते सर्व नरकं यान्ति नियतं तु श्वभोजनम्
All these certainly go to hell, destined to be the food of dogs.
कर्माणि ये तु कुर्वन्ति सर्वे निरयवासिनः
Indeed, all who perform such actions dwell in hell.
सुदारुणस्तु शीतात्मा तस्याधस्तात्तपः स्मृतः
Among them, the most terrible is cold in nature; beneath it is known as Tapah.
भूमेरधस्तात्सप्तैव नरकाः परिकीर्त्तिताः
Beneath the earth, seven hells are described.
रौरवः प्रथमस्तेषां महारौरव एव च
Of these, the first is Raurava, and the second is Mahāraurava.
तृतीयः कालसूत्रः स्यान्महाहिर्विविधः स्मृतः
The third is Kālasūtra, said to be filled with great serpents.
लोहः षष्ठः स्मृतस्तेषामविधेयस्तु सप्तमः
The sixth among them is called Loha, and the seventh is known as Avīci.
सुदारुणस्तु शीतात्मा त्स्याधस्तात्तपो ऽधमः
The most terrible, cold in nature, is beneath that, called the lowest Tapah.
अप्रतिष्ठे स्थितिर्नास्ति भ्रमस्तस्मिन्सदा स्मृतः
In Avīci, there is no stable place; constant wandering is said to occur there.
तस्मात्सुदारुणो लोहः कर्मणां श्रयणाच्च सः
Therefore, Loha is exceedingly dreadful, both because of the deeds and the suffering found there.
पीडाबन्धवधासंगादप्रतीकारलक्षणः
Marked by unrelenting pain, bondage, and slaughter, with no possibility of escape.
दुःखोत्कर्षस्तु सर्वेषु ह्यधर्मस्य निमित्ततः कूटागारप्र माणैश्च शरीरैस्तत्र नारकाः
The utmost intensity of suffering arises in all these due to unrighteousness; and in the iron houses, the bodies of the inhabitants of hell are measured.
दुःखप्रकर्षश्चोग्रस्तु तेषु सर्वेषु वै स्मृतः
Among all of them, indeed, the extremity of suffering is said to be severe.
दुःखप्रकर्षश्चोग्रस्तु तेषु सर्वेषु वै स्मृतः

तत्रानुभूयते दुःखं क्षीणे कर्मणि वै पुनः
There, suffering is experienced again when karma is exhausted.
देवांश्च तारकाश्चैव ह्यूर्द्ध्वं चाधश्च संस्थिताः
The gods and the stars are established both above and below.
उपभोगार्थमुत्पत्तिरौपपत्तिककर्मतः
Birth arises for the sake of enjoyment, according to the karma that accords with one's nature.
नारकांश्च तथा देवान्सर्वान्पश्यं त्यधेमुखान्
Thus, seeing all the hellish beings as well as the gods, with their various faces,
तस्मादूर्द्ध्वमधोभावो लोकालोके न विद्यते
Therefore, above and below, there is no state of world or non-world.
अथाब्रुवन्पुनर्वायुंब्राह्मणाः सत्रिणस्तदा
Then, at that time, the Brahmins performing the sacrifice again addressed Vayu.
