मन्वन्तरेषु देवानामिज्या यत्रैव लौकिकी
In the Manvantaras, there is the worldly worship of the gods there.
सर्वासां देवयोनीनां स्थितिहेतुः स वै स्मृतः
He is remembered as the cause of the stability of all divine lineages.
ध्रुवादूर्द्ध्वं महर्लोको यस्मिंस्ते कल्पवासिनः
Above Dhruva is the Maharloka, where those who dwell for a kalpa reside.
द्वीकोट्यां तु महर्लोकाज्जनलोको व्यवस्थितः
At a distance of twenty million from Maharloka is established Janaloka.
यत्र ते ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा दक्षाद्याः साधकाः स्मृताः
There are remembered the sons of Brahmā, such as Dakṣa, who are accomplished.
षड्गुणं तु तपोलोकात्सत्यलोकान्तरं स्मृतम्
It is remembered that between Tapoloka and Satyaloka is a sixfold distance.
यस्मिन्न च्यवते भूयो ब्रह्मणं य उपासते
Those who worship Brahman there do not fall again.
ऊर्द्ध्वभागस्ततोंऽडस्य ब्रह्मलोकात्परः स्मृतः
Above that, in the upper part of the egg, is said to be Brahmaloka, the highest.
स चौर्द्ध्व संप्रचारो ऽस्य गत्यन्तश्चपरः स्मृतः
And its movement is upward; its final destination is said to be beyond.
अधोगतीनां वक्ष्यामि भूतानां स्थानकल्पनाम्
I shall now describe the arrangement of the abodes for beings of downward movement.
नरको रौरवो घोरः शूकरस्ताल एवं च
There are the terrible hells: Raurava, Śūkara, Tāla, and others.
कृमी च कृमिभक्षश्च लालाभक्षो विशंसनः
Also Kṛmi, Kṛmibhakṣa, Lālābhakṣa, and Viśaṃsana.
विष्टाकीर्णश्च नरको मूत्रकीर्ण स्तथैव च
And the hells Viṣṭākīrṇa and Mūtrakīrṇa as well.
अग्निज्वालो महाघोरः संदंशो ऽथाश्वभोजनः
Agnijvāla, exceedingly terrible, Saṃdaṃśa, and Āśvabhojana.
अप्रतिष्ठो ऽथ वीचिश्च नरका ह्येवमादयः
Apratiṣṭha and Vīci are also hells, and so are others like these.
येषु दुष्कृतकर्माणः पतन्तीह वृथक्पृथक्
In these, those who perform evil deeds fall, each one separately.
रौरवे कूटसाक्षे तुमिथ्या यश्चाभिशसति
In the hell called Raurava, one who gives false witness and one who curses falsely shall reside.
राधो गोध्रो भ्रूणहा च ह्यग्निदाता पुरस्य च
The one who steals, the one who eats the flesh of the iguana, the killer of a fetus, the giver of fire, and the destroyer of a city.
ताले पतेत्क्षत्रियहा हत्वा वैश्यं च मज्जति
The slayer of a Kshatriya falls into Tāla, and one who kills a Vaishya sinks therein.
सप्तकुम्भेष्वसौ गामी तथा राजभटश्च यः
He who has intercourse with cows, and he who serves the king's soldiers, shall enter the hell of seven pots.
साध्वीविक्रयकर्त्ता च यस्तु भक्तं परित्यजेत्
One who sells a virtuous woman, and one who abandons food offered to him.
वेदं विक्रीणतेये च वेदं वै दूषयन्ति ये
Those who sell the Veda, and those who corrupt the Veda.
अगम्यगामी च नरो नरकं शबलं व्रजेत्
A man who approaches forbidden women shall go to the hell called Shabala.
दुरिष्टं कुरुते यस्तु कीडलोहं प्रपद्यते
He who commits wicked deeds shall enter the hell of insects and iron.
रत्नं दूषयते यस्तु कृमिभक्षे प्रपद्यते
He who corrupts a jewel shall enter the hell where worms are eaten.
लालाभक्षे स तिष्ठेत्तु दुर्गन्धे नरके गतः
He who eats saliva shall remain in a foul-smelling hell.
आरामे ऽप्यग्निदाता यः पतते स विशंसनि
Even in a garden, the giver of fire shall fall into the dreadful hell.
नक्षत्रैर्जीवते यश्च नरो गच्छत्यधोमुखम्
A man who lives by astrology shall go downward.
क्षीरं सुरां च लवणं लाक्षां गन्धं रसं तिलान् एवमादीनि विक्रीणन्घोरे पूयवहे पतेत्
One who sells milk, liquor, salt, lac, fragrance, juice, sesame, and such things shall fall into the terrible hell filled with pus.
पक्षिणश्च मृगाञ्छागान्सो ऽप्येनं नरकं व्रजेत्
He who kills birds, deer, and goats shall also go to hell.
