As the sun sets, its radiant light is gathered into its own rays, marking the transition from day to night. This process unfolds in a steady sequence, affecting both the southern and northern halves of the earth. Darkness, known as night, arises simply from the absence of the sun’s illumination. When the sun journeys through the middle of Puṣkara, its path and speed can be measured. In a single muhūrta, the sun traverses fifty thousand yojanas, with additional thousands counted beyond that. Following this course, as it reaches the southernmost point, it turns and revolves through the middle of Puṣkara during the southern solstice. At this southern point, the sun’s movement covers one hundred and forty-five thousand yojanas. When the sun, having completed its southern journey, returns to stand at the equinox, its orbit at this time is measured at eighty-one hundred thousand yojanas. As it moves northward toward the sixth continent, Śākadvīpa, the distance from its starting point is one crore yojanas, with an extra fifty-eight yojanas added. There exist the root, the sixth, and three sunrise paths of Ajavīthi, each with their own measures. The space between the two beams is also described: three hundred and thirty-three yojanas separate them. The intervals between these beams and lines, both to the south and north, are each seventy-one yojanas less than the previous. This space between lines and beams, both outer and inner, is carefully remembered and measured. From the outer regions and on the southern side, the sun’s course follows proper sequence. The fire of the sun moves just as much on the southern side, covering seventeen thousand yojanas in total, with twenty-one yojanas added. The diameter of this celestial circle is prescribed as transverse. Just as a potter’s wheel swiftly turns back at its limit, so does the sun traverse the vast earth in a short span of time. Each day, the sun moves through thirteen and a half constellations. Yet, at the center of the potter’s wheel, movement is slower, and so too, over a longer period, the sun covers only a small distance on the ground, progressing sluggishly. During the night, the sun passes through the stars in twelve moments. Dhruva, like a lump of clay at the wheel’s center, revolves steadfastly. Between two wooden posts, the circles of the heavens revolve, and Dhruva remains fixed, rotating in place. Throughout day and night, the sun’s motion alternates—sometimes slow, sometimes swift. At night, the sun’s movement is again swift, but at other times, it slows, and so does its progress. Thus, the sun’s journey across the heavens is a wondrous cycle of speed and stillness, illuminating the mysteries of time and space.
