In that wondrous region, humans are born with a radiant luster, shining like the finest silver. In the land known as Harivarsha, all the people delight in drinking the purest sugarcane juice, their hearts always filled with joy and contentment. At the very center of these lands lies the famed region called Ilavrita. Here, the moon, the sun, and even the stars do not shine with their light. Instead, the people themselves are born with the delicate fragrance of lotus petals. They are wise, enjoy every pleasure, and reap the fruits of their virtuous deeds. These excellent men live for thirteen thousand years, their lives long and blessed. Ilavrita extends from the great mountain Meru in all directions, measuring nine thousand units across. Its form is four-sided on every side, shaped like a vast dish. Surrounding it is the mighty Gandhamadana mountain, stretching thirty-four thousand units in extent and rising forty thousand units above the earth. To the east lies the Malyavan mountain, equal in measure to Gandhamadana. Among these peaks, the great Meru stands at the center, possessing its own unique dimensions—its breadth matches the others, and its length is said to be one niyuta. As the mountains extend outward, their lengths decrease, and each is remembered as being square in shape. Within this land, the Jambu river flows, abundant in water, appearing dark and broken like collyrium. There stands a magnificent, eternal Jambu tree named Sudarshana, so renowned that the land itself is called Jambudvipa after it. This king of trees reaches the sky in every direction, and sages who perceive the truth have measured the size of its fruit. The juice of this fruit becomes a river, flowing forth in abundance, and those near the Jambu tree always partake of its nectar. In this sacred place, there is no hunger, no fatigue, no death, nor even drowsiness. The juice shines with the radiant color of indragopas, those red insects, and as it drips, it becomes bright and pure like gold, the very ornament of the gods. By the Lord’s grace, the earth gently receives those who have passed away. On Hemakuta mountain, the Gandharvas dwell with their groups of Apsaras, singing and dancing in joy. Upon Mount Meru itself, thirty-three divine gods, worthy of sacrifice, delight in sport and play. Among the Daityas and Dānavas, the mountain called Śveta is famed, and within its nine regions, each is established according to its proper share. The number of these regions is beyond reckoning, known only to those who truly seek wisdom. In these lands, the illustrious Kubera, lord of wealth, resides together with the Rākṣasas. From the foot of the sacred mountain Kailāsa springs a holy, auspicious river of cool water. From this divine source flows the beautiful river Mandākinī. To the northeast of Kailāsa stands the divine mountain famed for all medicinal herbs. There, the radiant mountain Candraprabha shines like the moon, glittering with the brilliance of jewels. From this mountain flows the clear, pure river called Svacchodā. Upon its slopes dwells Maṇibhadra, accompanied by his devoted followers. Thus, in this blessed realm, the sacred Mandākinī and the river Svacchodā, both with pure waters, flow side by side, bestowing their blessings upon all who dwell there.
