सतोयतोयदाकारस् तीक्ष्णशृङ्गो ऽर्कलोचनः खुराग्रपातैर् अत्यर्थं दारयन् धरणीतलम्
He appeared like a rain-laden cloud, with sharp horns and eyes like the sun; with the blows of his hooves he tore up the earth's surface excessively.
लेलिहानः सनिष्पेषं जिह्वयौष्ठौ पुनः पुनः संरम्भाक्षिप्तलाङ्गूलः कठिनस्कन्धबन्धनः
Licking his lips and crushing his jaws, again and again, his tail agitated in fury, his shoulders bound with hardness.
उदग्रककुदाभोगः प्रमाणाद् दुरतिक्रमः विण्मूत्रालिप्तपृष्ठाङ्गो गवाम् उद्वेगकारकः
His hump was high and arched, impossible to surpass in size; his back and limbs smeared with dung and urine, he caused distress among the cows.
प्रलम्बकण्ठो ऽभिमुखस् तरुघाताङ्किताननः पातयन् स गवां गर्भान् दैत्यो वृषभरूपधृक्
With a hanging neck, facing forward, his face marked by blows against trees, the demon, taking the form of a bull, caused the cows to miscarry.
सूदयंस् तरसा सर्वान् वनान्य् अटति यः सदा ततस् तम् अतिघोराक्षम् अवेक्ष्यातिभयातुराः
Rushing violently, he always roamed the forests, destroying all; seeing him, dreadful-eyed, the cowherds were seized with extreme fear.
गोपा गोपस्त्रियश् चैव कृष्ण कृष्णेति चुक्रुशुः सिंहनादं ततश् चक्रे तलशब्दं च केशवः
The cowherds and their wives cried out, 'Krishna! Krishna!' Then Keshava made a lion's roar and struck his palm.
तच्छब्दश्रवणाच् चासौ दामोदरमुखं ययौ अग्रन्यस्तविषाणाग्रः कृष्णकुक्षिकृतेक्षणः
Hearing that sound, Ariṣṭa approached Damodara, lowering his horns in front, his gaze fixed on Krishna's chest.
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा दैत्यो वृषभरूपधृक् आयान्तं दैत्यवृषभं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णो महाबलम्
The wicked-souled demon, taking the form of a bull, charged; seeing the mighty demon-bull approaching, Krishna stood firm.
न चचाल ततः स्थानाद् अवज्ञास्मितलीलया आसन्नं चैव जग्राह ग्राहवन् मधुसूदनः
He did not move from his place, out of playful disdain and with a smile; and as Ariṣṭa drew near, Madhusudana seized him as a lion does its prey.
जघान जानुना कुक्षौ विषाणग्रहणाचलम् तस्य दर्पबलं हत्वा गृहीतस्य विषाणयोः
He struck his belly with his knee, holding his horns unmoved; having subdued his pride and strength, grasping his horns.
आपीडयद् अरिष्टस्य कण्ठं क्लिन्नम् इवाम्बरम् उत्पाट्य शृङ्गम् एकं च तेनैवाताडयत् ततः
He pressed Ariṣṭa's neck as if wringing a wet garment, tore off one of his horns, and struck him with it.
ममार स महादैत्यो मुखाच् छोणितम् उद्वमन् तुष्टुवुर् निहते तस्मिन् गोपा दैत्ये जनार्दनम् जम्भे हते सहस्राक्षं पुरा देवगणा यथा
That great demon died, vomiting blood from his mouth; when the demon was slain, the cowherds praised Janardana, just as the gods once praised Indra when Jambha was killed.
ककुद्मिनि हते ऽरिष्टे धेनुके च निपातिते प्रलम्बे निधनं नीते धृते गोवर्धनाचले
When Kakudmin was slain, Ariṣṭa destroyed, Dhenuka struck down, Pralamba killed, and Govardhana Hill held aloft,
दमिते कालिये नागे भग्ने तुङ्गद्रुमद्वये हतायां पूतनायां च शकटे परिवर्तिते
When Kāliya the serpent was subdued, the two tall trees broken, Pūtanā slain, and the cart overturned,
कंसाय नारदः प्राह यथावृत्तम् अनुक्रमात् यशोदादेवकीगर्भपरिवर्ताद्य् अशेषतः
Nārada told Kaṃsa, in sequence, all that had occurred—beginning from the exchange of Yaśodā and Devakī’s wombs, without omission.
श्रुत्वा तत् सकलं कंसो नारदाद् देवदर्शनात् वसुदेवं प्रति तदा कोपं चक्रे स दुर्मतिः
Hearing all this from Nārada, who had come from seeing the gods, Kaṃsa, that wicked-minded one, became enraged at Vasudeva.
सो ऽतिकोपाद् उपालभ्य सर्वयादवसंसदि जगर्हे यादवांश् चापि कार्यं चैतद् अचिन्तयत्
In great anger, he reproached Vasudeva in the assembly of all the Yādavas, reviled the Yādava clan, and pondered what action to take.
यावन् न बलम् आरूढौ बलकृष्णौ सुबालकौ तावद् एव मया वध्याव् असाध्यौ रूढयौवनौ
Before Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, still young boys, gain strength, I must slay them; once they reach maturity, they will be impossible to defeat.
चाणूरो ऽत्र महावीर्यो मुष्टिकश् च महाबलः एताभ्यां मल्लयुद्धे तौ घातयिष्यामि दुर्मदौ
Cāṇūra, of great prowess, and Muṣṭika, of immense strength—by these two, I will have those arrogant boys killed in a wrestling match.
धनुर्महमहायागव्याजेनानीय तौ व्रजात् तथा तथा करिष्यामि यास्यतः संक्षयं यथा
Under the pretext of the grand bow festival, I will bring them from Vraja, and in such a way, I will ensure their destruction.
इत्य् आलोच्य स दुष्टात्मा कंसो रामजनार्दनौ हन्तुं कृतमतिर् वीरम् अक्रूरं वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Having resolved thus, that evil-minded Kaṃsa made up his mind to kill Rāma and Janārdana, and spoke to Akrūra.
भो भो दानपते वाक्यं क्रियतां प्रीतये मम इतः स्यन्दनम् आरुह्य गम्यतां नन्दगोकुलम्
O generous lord, listen to my words for my pleasure: mount your chariot and go to Nanda’s cowherd village.
वसुदेवसुतौ तत्र विष्णोर् अंशसमुद्भवौ नाशाय किल संभूतौ मम दुष्टौ प्रवर्धतः
There, the sons of Vasudeva, born from a portion of Viṣṇu, have arisen for my destruction and are wicked, growing up.
धनुर्महमहायागश् चतुर्दश्यां भविष्यति आनेयौ भवता तौ तु मल्लयुद्धाय तत्र वै
The grand bow festival will take place on the fourteenth day; you must bring those two for wrestling there.
चाणूरमुष्टिकौ मल्लौ नियुद्धकुशलौ मम ताभ्यां सहानयोर् युद्धं सर्वलोको ऽत्र पश्यतु
Cāṇūra and Muṣṭika, my wrestlers skilled in combat, will fight with them; let the whole world witness their battle.
नागः कुवलयापीडो महामात्रप्रचोदितः स तौ निहंस्यते पापौ वसुदेवात्मजौ शिशू
The elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa, driven by the chief mahout, will kill those wicked sons of Vasudeva, though they are children.
तौ हत्वा वसुदेवं च नन्दगोपं च दुर्मतिम् हनिष्ये पितरं चैव उग्रसेनं च दुर्मतिम्
After killing them, Vasudeva, Nandagopa, and that wicked one, I will also slay my father and Ugrasena, both evil-minded.
ततः समस्तगोपानां गोधनान्य् अखिलान्य् अहम् वित्तं चापहरिष्यामि दुष्टानां मद्वधैषिणाम्
Then, I will seize all the cattle and wealth of the cowherds, enemies who desire my death.
त्वाम् ऋते यादवाश् चेमे दुष्टा दानपते मम एतेषां च वधायाहं प्रयतिष्याम्य् अनुक्रमात्
Except for you, O generous lord, all these Yādavas are wicked; I will strive to destroy them, one by one.
ततो निष्कण्टकं सर्वं राज्यम् एतद् अयादवम् प्रसाधिष्ये त्वया तस्मान् मत्प्रीत्या वीर गम्यताम्
Afterwards, I will rule this entire kingdom, free of thorns and Yādavas; therefore, for my pleasure, O hero, go forth.
