इत्य् आज्ञप्ताः सुरेन्द्रेण मुमुचुस् ते बलाहकाः वातवर्षं महाभीमम् अभावाय गवां द्विजाः
Thus commanded by the lord of the gods, the clouds released a fierce storm of wind and rain to destroy the cows, O twice-born.
ततः क्षणेन धरणी ककुभो ऽम्बरम् एव च एकं धारामहासारपूरणेनाभवद् द्विजाः
In a moment, O twice-born, the earth, the quarters, and the sky were filled by a single, massive torrent.
गावस् तु तेन पतता वर्षवातेन वेगिना धुताः प्राणाञ् जहुः सर्वास् तिर्यङ्मुखशिरोधराः
The cows, struck by that swift storm of rain and wind, lost their lives, all lying with their heads turned sideways.
क्रोडेन वत्सान् आक्रम्य तस्थुर् अन्या द्विजोत्तमाः गावो विवत्साश् च कृता वारिपूरेण चापराः
Some cows stood pressing their calves to their sides, O best of twice-born; others became separated from their calves by the floodwaters.
वत्साश् च दीनवदनाः पवनाकम्पिकंधराः त्राहि त्राहीत्य् अल्पशब्दाः कृष्णम् ऊचुर् इवार्तकाः
The calves, with pitiful faces and trembling necks from the wind, cried out softly, 'Save us, save us!' as if calling to Krishna in distress.
ततस् तद् गोकुलं सर्वं गोगोपीगोपसंकुलम् अतीवार्तं हरिर् दृष्ट्वा त्राणायाचिन्तयत् तदा
Then Hari saw that entire Gokula, crowded with cows, cowherd women, and cowherds, in extreme distress, and thought of their protection.
एतत् कृतं महेन्द्रेण महभङ्गविरोधिना तद् एतद् अखिलं गोष्ठं त्रातव्यम् अधुना मया
This has been done by mighty Indra, opposing the great disruption; now I must protect this entire pasture.
इमम् अद्रिम् अहं वीर्याद् उत्पाट्योरुशिलातलम् धारयिष्यामि गोष्ठस्य पृथुच्छत्त्रम् इवोपरि
With my strength, I will uproot this mountain with its vast rocky surface and hold it above the pasture like a broad umbrella.
इति कृत्वा मतिं कृष्णो गोवर्धनमहीधरम् उत्पाट्यैककरेणैव धारयाम् आस लीलया
Having resolved thus, Krishna playfully uprooted Govardhana, the great mountain, and held it aloft with a single hand.
गोपांश् चाह जगन्नाथः समुत्पाटितभूधरः विशध्वम् अत्र सहिताः कृतं वर्षनिवारणम्
The lord of the world, having lifted the mountain, spoke to the cowherds: 'All of you together, enter here; the rain has been stopped.'
सुनिर्वातेषु देशेषु यथायोग्यम् इहास्यताम् प्रविश्य नात्र भेतव्यं गिरिपातस्य निर्भयैः
In places where the wind is gentle, settle here as appropriate; enter without fear, for there is no danger from the mountain's fall.
इत्य् उक्तास् तेन ते गोपा विविशुर् गोधनैः सह शकटारोपितैर् भाण्डैर् गोप्यश् चासारपीडिताः
Thus addressed by him, the cowherds entered with their cattle, bringing their goods loaded on carts, and the cowherd women, afflicted by the downpour, followed.
कृष्णो ऽपि तं दधारैवं शैलम् अत्यन्तनिश्चलम् व्रजौकोवासिभिर् हर्षविस्मिताक्षैर् निरीक्षितः
Krishna, too, held that mountain perfectly steady, watched by the residents of Vraja with eyes wide in joy and wonder.
गोपगोपीजनैर् हृष्टैः प्रीतिविस्तारितेक्षणैः संस्तूयमानचरितः कृष्णः शैलम् अधारयत्
Krishna held up the mountain, his deeds being praised by the delighted cowherds and cowherd women, their eyes expanded with love.
सप्तरात्रं महामेघा ववर्षुर् नन्दगोकुले इन्द्रेण चोदिता मेघा गोपानां नाशकारिणा
For seven nights, great clouds—urged on by Indra—poured rain upon Nanda's Gokula, bringing destruction to the cowherds.
ततो धृते महाशैले परित्राते च गोकुले मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञो बलभिद् वारयाम् आस तान् घनान्
Then, with the great mountain upheld and Gokula protected, the breaker of Bala, whose promise had proved false, restrained those clouds.
व्यभ्रे नभसि देवेन्द्रे वितथे शक्रमन्त्रिते निष्क्रम्य गोकुलं हृष्टः स्वस्थानं पुनर् आगमत्
When the sky cleared and Indra's efforts proved vain, the god, having recited his mantras, left Gokula joyfully and returned to his own place.
मुमोच कृष्णो ऽपि तदा गोवर्धनमहागिरिम् स्वस्थाने विस्मितमुखैर् दृष्टस् तैर् व्रजवासिभिः
Then Krishna set down the great Govardhana mountain in its own place, watched by the residents of Vraja, their faces filled with astonishment.
धृते गोवर्धने शैले परित्राते च गोकुले रोचयाम् आस कृष्णस्य दर्शनं पाकशासनः
With Govardhana mountain upheld and Gokula saved, the lord of sacrifice desired to see Krishna.
सो ऽधिरुह्य महानागम् ऐरावतम् अमित्रजित् गोवर्धनगिरौ कृष्णं ददर्श त्रिदशाधिपः
Then the lord of the gods, conqueror of enemies, mounted the great serpent Airavata and saw Krishna on Govardhana hill.
चारयन्तं महावीर्यं गाश् च गोपवपुर्धरम् कृत्स्नस्य जगतो गोपं वृतं गोपकुमारकैः
He saw the mighty Krishna, in the form of a cowherd boy, tending the cows, the protector of the whole world, surrounded by cowherd children.
गरुडं च ददर्शोच्चैर् अन्तर्धानगतं द्विजाः कृतच्छायं हरेर् मूर्ध्नि पक्षाभ्यां पक्षिपुंगवम्
And the twice-born saw Garuda, king of birds, high above, hidden from view, shading Hari's head with his wings.
अवरुह्य स नागेन्द्राद् एकान्ते मधुसूदनम् शक्रः सस्मितम् आहेदं प्रीतिविस्फारितेक्षणः
Descending from the great serpent, Indra approached Madhusudana in private, and, his eyes wide with joy, spoke with a smile.
कृष्ण कृष्ण शृणुष्वेदं यदर्थम् अहम् आगतः त्वत्समीपं महाबाहो नैतच् चिन्त्यं त्वयान्यथा
Krishna, Krishna, listen to this, the reason I have come to you, mighty-armed one; you should not think otherwise.
भारावतरणार्धाय पृथिव्याः पृथिवीतलम् अवतीर्णो ऽखिलाधारस् त्वम् एव परमेश्वर
You alone, supreme lord, have descended to earth's surface to relieve her burden, you who are the support of all.
महभङ्गविरुद्धेन मया गोकुलनाशकाः समादिष्टा महामेघास् तैश् चैतत् कदनं कृतम्
By me, in opposition to the great disruption, mighty clouds were sent to destroy Gokula, and by them this devastation was wrought.
त्रातास् तापात् त्वया गावः समुत्पाट्य महागिरिम् तेनाहं तोषितो वीर कर्मणात्यद्भुतेन ते
The cows were saved from distress by you, who lifted the great mountain; for this most wondrous deed of yours, hero, I am satisfied.
साधितं कृष्ण देवानाम् अद्य मन्ये प्रयोजनम् त्वयायम् अद्रिप्रवरः करेणैकेन चोद्धृतः
Today, Krishna, I consider the purpose of the gods fulfilled by you, as this best of mountains was raised with a single hand.
गोभिश् च नोदितः कृष्ण त्वत्समीपम् इहागतः त्वया त्राताभिर् अत्यर्थं युष्मत्कारणकारणात्
Not urged by the cows, Krishna, have I come to you here; but because you have greatly protected them, for your sake and theirs.
स त्वां कृष्णाभिषेक्ष्यामि गवां वाक्यप्रचोदितः उपेन्द्रत्वे गवाम् इन्द्रो गोविन्दस् त्वं भविष्यसि
Therefore, Krishna, prompted by the words of the cows, I shall anoint you; in the office of Upendra, you will become Govinda, the Indra of the cows.
