यो ऽन्यस्याः फलम् अश्नन् वै पूजयत्य् अपरां नरः इह च प्रेत्य चैवासौ तात नाप्नोति शोभनम्
One who enjoys the fruit of another's knowledge and worships another, O dear one, does not attain good results here or hereafter.
पूज्यन्तां प्रथिताः सीमाः सीमान्तं च पुनर् वनम् वनान्ता गिरयः सर्वे सा चास्माकं परा गतिः
Let the renowned boundaries, the borderlands, and again the forest, the mountain regions, and all the hills be honored; this is our highest path.
गिरियज्ञस् त्व् अयं तस्माद् गोयज्ञश् च प्रवर्त्यताम् किम् अस्माकं महेन्द्रेण गावः शैलाश् च देवताः
Therefore, let the mountain sacrifice and the cow sacrifice be performed; what have we to do with Indra? Cows and mountains are our deities.
मन्त्रयज्ञपरा विप्राः सीरयज्ञाश् च कर्षकाः गिरिगोयज्ञशीलाश् च वयम् अद्रिवनाश्रयाः
Brahmins are devoted to sacrifices with mantras, farmers to boundary sacrifices, and we are devoted to mountain and cow sacrifices, dwelling in the forests and mountains.
तस्माद् गोवर्धनः शैलो भवद्भिर् विविधार्हणैः अर्च्यतां पूज्यतां मेध्यं पशुं हत्वा विधानतः
Therefore, let Govardhana Hill be worshipped and honored by you with various offerings; let a pure animal be sacrificed according to the prescribed rites.
सर्वघोषस्य संदोहा गृह्यन्तां मा विचार्यताम् भोज्यन्तां तेन वै विप्रास् तथान्ये चापि वाञ्छकाः
Let the entire herd's milk be collected without hesitation; let the Brahmins and others who desire it partake of it.
तम् अर्चितं कृते होमे भोजितेषु द्विजातिषु शरत्पुष्पकृतापीडाः परिगच्छन्तु गोगणाः
When the offering has been made, the sacrifice performed, and the Brahmins have eaten, let the herds of cows adorned with autumn flowers roam about.
एतन् मम मतं गोपाः संप्रीत्या क्रियते यदि ततः कृता भवेत् प्रीतिर् गवाम् अद्रेस् तथा मम
This is my opinion, O cowherds; if it is done with joy, then satisfaction will be gained for the cows, the mountain, and for me as well.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा नन्दाद्यास् ते व्रजौकसः प्रीत्युत्फुल्लमुखा विप्राः साधु साध्व् इत्य् अथाब्रुवन्
Hearing his words, Nanda and the other residents of the cowherd village, their faces blooming with delight, said to the Brahmins, 'Excellent, excellent!'
शोभनं ते मतं वत्स यद् एतद् भवतोदितम् तत् करिष्याम्य् अहं सर्वं गिरियज्ञः प्रवर्त्यताम्
O child, your opinion is splendid, as you have spoken; I will do everything—let the mountain sacrifice be performed.
तथा च कृतवन्तस् ते गिरियज्ञं व्रजौकसः दधिपायसमांसाद्यैर् ददुः शैलबलिं ततः
Thus, the cowherd villagers performed the mountain sacrifice, offering to the mountain with curds, rice pudding, meat, and other foods.
द्विजांश् च भोजयाम् आसुः शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः गावः शैलं ततश् चक्रुर् अर्चितास् तं प्रदक्षिणम्
They fed the Brahmins by the hundreds and thousands; then the cows, having honored the mountain, circled it.
वृषभाश् चाभिनर्दन्तः सतोया जलदा इव गिरिमूर्धनि गोविन्दः शैलो ऽहम् इति मूर्तिमान्
The bulls bellowed, like rain-filled clouds on the mountain summit; Govinda, manifest as the mountain, declared, 'I am the mountain.'
बुभुजे ऽन्नं बहुविधं गोपवर्याहृतं द्विजाः कृष्णस् तेनैव रूपेण गोपैः सह गिरेः शिरः
Krishna, in that very form, together with the cowherds and Brahmins, ate the various foods brought by the foremost cowherds atop the mountain.
अधिरुह्यार्चयाम् आस द्वितीयाम् आत्मनस् तनुम् अन्तर्धानं गते तस्मिन् गोपा लब्ध्वा ततो वरान् कृत्वा गिरिमहं गोष्ठं निजम् अभ्याययुः पुनः
Ascending, he worshipped his second form after the first had vanished; then, having received boons from the cowherds, he returned again to his own pasture.
महे प्रतिहते शक्रो भृशं कोपसमन्वितः संवर्तकं नाम गणं तोयदानाम् अथाब्रवीत्
When his great sacrifice was thwarted, Indra, filled with intense anger, spoke to the group of rain-bearing clouds called Samvartaka.
भो भो मेघा निशम्यैतद् वदतो वचनं मम आज्ञानन्तरम् एवाशु क्रियताम् अविचारितम्
O clouds, listen to my words: after my command, act swiftly and without hesitation.
नन्दगोपः सुदुर्बुद्धिर् गोपैर् अन्यैः सहायवान् कृष्णाश्रयबलाध्मातो महभङ्गम् अचीकरत्
Nandagopa, of very poor judgment, together with other cowherds, relying on Krishna's strength, caused great disruption.
आजीवो यः परं तेषां गोपत्वस्य च कारणम् ता गावो वृष्टिपातेन पीड्यन्तां वचनान् मम
Their livelihood depends entirely on cowherding; let those cows be afflicted by heavy rainfall at my command.
अहम् अप्य् अद्रिशृङ्गाभं तुङ्गम् आरुह्य वारणम् साहाय्यं वः करिष्यामि वायूनां संगमेन च
I too will ascend a lofty peak, resembling an elephant's tusk, and assist you, joining forces with the winds.
इत्य् आज्ञप्ताः सुरेन्द्रेण मुमुचुस् ते बलाहकाः वातवर्षं महाभीमम् अभावाय गवां द्विजाः
Thus commanded by the lord of the gods, the clouds released a fierce storm of wind and rain to destroy the cows, O twice-born.
ततः क्षणेन धरणी ककुभो ऽम्बरम् एव च एकं धारामहासारपूरणेनाभवद् द्विजाः
In a moment, O twice-born, the earth, the quarters, and the sky were filled by a single, massive torrent.
गावस् तु तेन पतता वर्षवातेन वेगिना धुताः प्राणाञ् जहुः सर्वास् तिर्यङ्मुखशिरोधराः
The cows, struck by that swift storm of rain and wind, lost their lives, all lying with their heads turned sideways.
क्रोडेन वत्सान् आक्रम्य तस्थुर् अन्या द्विजोत्तमाः गावो विवत्साश् च कृता वारिपूरेण चापराः
Some cows stood pressing their calves to their sides, O best of twice-born; others became separated from their calves by the floodwaters.
वत्साश् च दीनवदनाः पवनाकम्पिकंधराः त्राहि त्राहीत्य् अल्पशब्दाः कृष्णम् ऊचुर् इवार्तकाः
The calves, with pitiful faces and trembling necks from the wind, cried out softly, 'Save us, save us!' as if calling to Krishna in distress.
ततस् तद् गोकुलं सर्वं गोगोपीगोपसंकुलम् अतीवार्तं हरिर् दृष्ट्वा त्राणायाचिन्तयत् तदा
Then Hari saw that entire Gokula, crowded with cows, cowherd women, and cowherds, in extreme distress, and thought of their protection.
एतत् कृतं महेन्द्रेण महभङ्गविरोधिना तद् एतद् अखिलं गोष्ठं त्रातव्यम् अधुना मया
This has been done by mighty Indra, opposing the great disruption; now I must protect this entire pasture.
इमम् अद्रिम् अहं वीर्याद् उत्पाट्योरुशिलातलम् धारयिष्यामि गोष्ठस्य पृथुच्छत्त्रम् इवोपरि
With my strength, I will uproot this mountain with its vast rocky surface and hold it above the pasture like a broad umbrella.
इति कृत्वा मतिं कृष्णो गोवर्धनमहीधरम् उत्पाट्यैककरेणैव धारयाम् आस लीलया
Having resolved thus, Krishna playfully uprooted Govardhana, the great mountain, and held it aloft with a single hand.
गोपांश् चाह जगन्नाथः समुत्पाटितभूधरः विशध्वम् अत्र सहिताः कृतं वर्षनिवारणम्
The lord of the world, having lifted the mountain, spoke to the cowherds: 'All of you together, enter here; the rain has been stopped.'
