यदि शक्तो ऽसि गच्छ त्वम् अतिचञ्चलचेष्टित
"If you are able, go now, with your excessively restless behavior!"
इत्य् उक्त्वा च निजं कर्म सा चकार कुटुम्बिनी व्यग्रायाम् अथ तस्यां स कर्षमाण उलूखलम्
Having said this, the housewife went about her own tasks, and while she was busy, he began to drag the mortar.
यमलार्जुनयोर् मध्ये जगाम कमलेक्षणः कर्षता वृक्षयोर् मध्ये तिर्यग् एवम् उलूखलम्
The lotus-eyed one went between the two yamalārjuna trees, dragging the mortar sideways between them.
भग्नाव् उत्तुङ्गशाखाग्रौ तेन तौ यमलार्जुनौ ततः कटकटाशब्दसमाकर्णनकातरः
Then those two yamalārjuna trees, with their tall branches, were broken by him, and frightened by the loud cracking sound—
आजगाम व्रजजनो ददृशे च महाद्रुमौ भग्नस्कन्धौ निपातितौ भग्नशाखौ महीतले
The people of Vraja came running and saw the two great trees, their trunks broken, their branches shattered, fallen to the ground.
ददर्श चाल्पदन्तास्यं स्मितहासं च बालकम् तयोर् मध्यगतं बद्धं दाम्ना गाढं तथोदरे
They saw the boy, with only a few teeth and a smiling face, bound tightly around his waist with a rope, standing between the two.
ततश् च दामोदरतां स ययौ दामबन्धनात् गोपवृद्धास् ततः सर्वे नन्दगोपपुरोगमाः
From that time, because of being bound with a rope, he came to be called Dāmodara; then all the elders of the cowherds, led by Nanda, gathered.
मन्त्रयाम् आसुर् उद्विग्ना महोत्पातातिभीरवः स्थानेनेह न नः कार्यं व्रजामो ऽन्यन् महावनम्
Disturbed and greatly frightened by these terrible omens, they consulted together: 'We should not stay here; let us go to another great forest.'
उत्पाता बहवो ह्य् अत्र दृश्यन्ते नाशहेतवः पूतनाया विनाशश् च शकटस्य विपर्ययः
For here many omens are seen, causes of destruction: the death of Pūtanā, the overturning of the cart—
विना वातादिदोषेण द्रुमयोः पतनं तथा वृन्दावनम् इतः स्थानात् तस्माद् गच्छाम मा चिरम्
And the falling of the trees without any wind or other cause; therefore, let us quickly leave this place for Vṛndāvana.
यावद् भौममहोत्पातदोषो नाभिभवेद् व्रजम् इति कृत्वा मतिं सर्वे गमने ते व्रजौकसः
Until the great terrestrial calamity does not overtake Vraja, with this thought, all the inhabitants of Vraja resolved to depart.
ऊचुः स्वं स्वं कुलं शीघ्रं गम्यतां मा विलम्ब्यताम् ततः क्षणेन प्रययुः शकटैर् गोधनैस् तथा
They said, 'Let each return quickly to his own family, let there be no delay.' Then, in a moment, they set out with their carts and herds of cows.
यूथशो वत्सपालीश् च कालयन्तो व्रजौकसः सर्वावयवनिर्धूतं क्षणमात्रेण तत् तदा
In groups, the cowherd boys and girls, calling out to one another, in but a moment left behind all their possessions.
काककाकीसमाकीर्णं व्रजस्थानम् अभूद् द्विजाः वृन्दावनं भगवता कृष्णेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा
O twice-born, the place of Vraja became filled with crows and she-crows; Vṛndāvana was contemplated by the Blessed Kṛṣṇa, whose deeds are unwearied.
शुभेन मनसा ध्यातं गवां वृद्धिम् अभीप्सता ततस् तत्रातिरुक्षे ऽपि धर्मकाले द्विजोत्तमाः
With a pure mind, desiring the increase of their cows, he meditated upon it; therefore, O best of the twice-born, even in that season of great virtue, there—
प्रावृट्काल इवाभूच् च नवशष्पं समन्ततः स समावासितः सर्वो व्रजो वृन्दावने ततः
It became like the rainy season, with fresh grass everywhere; then all of Vraja settled in Vṛndāvana.
शकटीवाटपर्यन्तचन्द्रार्धाकारसंस्थितिः वत्सबालौ च संवृत्तौ रामदामोदरौ ततः
The arrangement of the carts and enclosures was in the shape of a half-moon; and there, the two boys, Rāma and Dāmodara, grew up.
तत्र स्थितौ तौ च गोष्ठे चेरतुर् बाललीलया बर्हिपत्त्रकृतापीडौ वन्यपुष्पावतंसकौ
There, those two remained in the cowherd settlement, wandering about in childish play, adorned with peacock feathers and forest flowers.
गोपवेणुकृतातोद्यपत्त्रवाद्यकृतस्वनौ काकपक्षधरौ बालौ कुमाराव् इव पावकौ
Playing music with cowherds' flutes and leaf-instruments, the two boys, bearing hair like crow's wings, shone like twin fires in their youth.
हसन्तौ च रमन्तौ च चेरतुस् तन् महद् वनम् क्वचिद् धसन्ताव् अन्योन्यं क्रीडमानौ तथा परैः
Laughing and delighting, they wandered through that great forest, sometimes laughing together, playing with each other and with others.
गोपपुत्रैः समं वत्सांश् चारयन्तौ विचेरतुः कालेन गच्छता तौ तु सप्तवर्षौ बभूवतुः
Along with the sons of the cowherds, they herded the calves and wandered about; as time passed, the two reached the age of seven years.
सर्वस्य जगतः पालौ वत्सपालौ महाव्रजे प्रावृट्कालस् ततो ऽतीव मेघौघस्थगिताम्बरः
The two herders of calves became the protectors of the whole world in the great Vraja; then came the rainy season, with the sky thickly covered by masses of clouds.
बभूव वारिधाराभिर् ऐक्यं कुर्वन् दिशाम् इव प्ररूढनवपुष्पाढ्या शक्रगोपवृता मही
There was a downpour of rain, as if uniting all the directions; the earth, covered with fresh-blooming flowers and the red insects called Indra's cows, was resplendent.
यथा मारकते वासीत् पद्मरागविभूषिता ऊहुर् उन्मार्गगामीनि निम्नगाम्भांसि सर्वतः
Just as an emerald is adorned with rubies, so the rivers, flowing out of their courses, carried everything away on all sides.
मनांसि दुर्विनीतानां प्राप्य लक्ष्मीं नवाम् इव विकाले च यथाकामं व्रजम् एत्य महाबलौ गोपैः समानैः सहितौ चिक्रीडाते ऽमराव् इव
The minds of the undisciplined, having attained new fortune, were like that; and in that season, as they wished, the two mighty ones, accompanied by their equals among the cowherds, played in Vraja like immortals.
एकदा तु विना रामं कृष्णो वृन्दावनं ययौ विचचार वृतो गोपैर् वन्यपुष्पस्रगुज्ज्वलः
One day, without Rāma, Kṛṣṇa went to Vṛndāvana; surrounded by cowherds and radiant with garlands of wild flowers, he wandered there.
स जगामाथ कालिन्दीं लोलकल्लोलशालिनीम् तीरसंलग्नफेनौघैर् हसन्तीम् इव सर्वतः
He then went to the Yamunā, whose waves danced playfully, whose banks were adorned with clusters of foam, as if she were laughing everywhere.
तस्यां चातिमहाभीमं विषाग्निकणदूषितम् ह्रदं कालीयनागस्य ददर्शातिविभीषणम्
There he saw a most dreadful pool, tainted by drops of poisonous fire, exceedingly terrifying, the abode of the serpent Kāliya.
विषाग्निना विसरता दग्धतीरमहातरुम् वाताहताम्बुविक्षेपस्पर्शदग्धविहंगमम्
Burned by the poison-fire that spread, the great trees on the riverbank were scorched, and the birds were singed by the wind-driven spray of the water.
तम् अतीव महारौद्रं मृत्युवक्त्रम् इवापरम् विलोक्य चिन्तयाम् आस भगवान् मधुसूदनः
Beholding that exceedingly terrible scene, like another mouth of Death, the blessed Madhusudana began to reflect.
