स चापि वितथः पुत्राञ् जनयाम् आस पञ्च वै सुहोत्रं च सुहोतारं गयं गर्गं तथैव च
Vitatha fathered five sons: Suhotra, Suhotāra, Gaya, Garga, and also Kapila, the great-souled.
कपिलं च महात्मानं सुहोत्रस्य सुतद्वयम् काशिकं च महासत्यं तथा गृत्समतिं नृपम्
Kapila, the great-souled, had two sons; Suhotra's sons were Kāśika, famed for truth, and Gṛtsamati, the king.
तथा गृत्समतेः पुत्रा ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया विशः काशिकस्य तु काशेयः पुत्रो दीर्घतपास् तथा
From Gṛtsamati came sons who were Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas; Kāśika's son was Kāśeya, and Dīrghatapas likewise.
बभूव दीर्घतपसो विद्वान् धन्वन्तरिः सुतः धन्वन्तरेस् तु तनयः केतुमान् इति विश्रुतः
From Dīrghatapas was born the learned Dhanvantari; Dhanvantari's son was Ketumān, renowned by name.
तथा केतुमतः पुत्रो विद्वान् भीमरथः स्मृतः पुत्रो भीमरथस्यापि वाराणस्यधिपो ऽभवत्
Ketumān's son was the wise Bhīmaratha; Bhīmaratha's son became the ruler of Vārāṇasī.
दिवोदास इति ख्यातः सर्वक्षत्रप्रणाशनः दिवोदासस्य पुत्रस् तु वीरो राजा प्रतर्दनः
He was known as Divodāsa, destroyer of all Kṣatriyas; Divodāsa's son was the valiant king Pratardana.
प्रतर्दनस्य पुत्रौ द्वौ वत्सो भार्गव एव च अलर्को राजपुत्रस् तु राजा सन्मतिमान् भुवि
Pratardana had two sons: Vatsa, of the Bhārgava lineage, and Alarka, a royal prince, a king esteemed in the world.
हैहयस्य तु दायाद्यं हृतवान् वै महीपतिः आजह्रे पितृदायाद्यं दिवोदासहृतं बलात्
The king seized the inheritance of Haihaya; he forcibly reclaimed his ancestral domain, which Divodāsa had taken.
भद्रश्रेण्यस्य पुत्रेण दुर्दमेन महात्मना दिवोदासेन बालेति घृणयासौ विसर्जितः
By the noble Durdamana, son of Bhadraśreṇya, Divodāsa was released out of compassion, though he was called Bāla.
अष्टारथो नाम नृपः सुतो भीमरथस्य वै तेन पुत्रेण बालस्य प्रहृतं तस्य भो द्विजाः
Aṣṭāratha, son of Bhīmaratha, was a king; by his son, Bāla, the possessions were taken, O Brāhmaṇas.
वैरस्यान्तं मुनिश्रेष्ठाः क्षत्रियेण विधित्सता अलर्कः काशिराजस् तु ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यसंगरः
When the best of sages sought to end the feud, Alarka, king of Kāśi, devoted to Brahman and steadfast in truth, acted.
षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिं वर्षशतानि च युवा रूपेण संपन्न आसीत् काशिकुलोद्वहः
For sixty thousand years and sixty hundred years, he remained youthful in appearance, the foremost of the Kāśi lineage.
लोपामुद्राप्रसादेन परमायुर् अवाप सः वयसो ऽन्ते मुनिश्रेष्ठा हत्वा क्षेमकराक्षसम्
By the grace of Lopāmudrā, he attained supreme longevity; at the end of his life, O best of sages, he slew the demon Kṣemakara.
रम्यां निवेशयाम् आस पुरीं वाराणसीं नृपः अलर्कस्य तु दायादः क्षेमको नाम पार्थिवः
The king established the beautiful city of Vārāṇasī; Kṣemaka, the heir of Alarka, was the ruler there.
क्षेमकस्य तु पुत्रो वै वर्षकेतुस् ततो ऽभवत् वर्षकेतोश् च दायादो विभुर् नाम प्रजेश्वरः
Kṣemaka's son was Varṣaketu, and Varṣaketu's heir was Vibhu, lord of the people.
आनर्तस् तु विभोः पुत्रः सुकुमारस् ततो ऽभवत् सुकुमारस्य पुत्रस् तु सत्यकेतुर् महारथः
Ānarta was Vibhu's son; Sukumāra came after him, and Sukumāra's son was Satyaketu, a great charioteer.
सुतो ऽभवन् महातेजा राजा परमधार्मिकः वत्सस्य वत्सभूमिस् तु भर्गभूमिस् तु भार्गवात्
His son was a king of great splendor and supreme righteousness; Vatsa's son was Vatsabhūmi, and Bhargabhūmi was descended from Bhārgava.
एते त्व् अङ्गिरसः पुत्रा जाता वंशे ऽथ भार्गवे ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् च मुनिसत्तमाः
These were the sons of Aṅgiras, born in the Bhārgava lineage: brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras, O best of sages.
आजमीढो ऽपरो वंशः श्रूयतां द्विजसत्तमाः सुहोत्रस्य बृहत् पुत्रो बृहतस् तनयास् त्रयः
Another lineage, Ājamīḍha, is to be heard, O best of twice-born; Suhotra's son was Bṛhat, and Bṛhat had three sons.
अजमीढो द्विमीढश् च पुरुमीढश् च वीर्यवान् अजमीढस्य पत्न्यस् तु तिस्रो वै यशसान्विताः
Ājamīḍha, Dvimīḍha, and Purumīḍha, all mighty; Ājamīḍha had three wives, all renowned.
नीली च केशिनी चैव धूमिनी च वराङ्गनाः अजमीढस्य केशिन्यां जज्ञे जह्नुः प्रतापवान्
Nīlī, Keśinī, and Dhūminī, all excellent women; from Keśinī, Ājamīḍha begot Jahnu, a man of great prowess.
आजह्रे यो महासत्त्रं सर्वमेधमखं विभुम् पतिलोभेन यं गङ्गा विनीतेव ससार ह
He performed the great sacrifice, the Sarvamedha, as lord; out of desire for her husband, Gaṅgā, subdued, departed from him.
नेच्छतः प्लावयाम् आस तस्य गङ्गा च तत् सदः तत् तया प्लावितं दृष्ट्वा यज्ञवाटं समन्ततः
Though he did not wish it, Gaṅgā flooded his sacrificial hall; seeing the entire altar inundated by her,
जह्नुर् अप्य् अब्रवीद् गङ्गां क्रुद्धो विप्रास् तदा नृपः एष ते त्रिषु लोकेषु संक्षिप्यापः पिबाम्य् अहम् अस्य गङ्गे ऽवलेपस्य सद्यः फलम् अवाप्नुहि
Jahnu, angered, addressed Gaṅgā, O king, and said: 'I shall drink up your waters from all three worlds; Gaṅgā, receive at once the fruit of your arrogance.'
ततः पीतां महात्मानो दृष्ट्वा गङ्गां महर्षयः उपनिन्युर् महाभागा दुहितृत्वेन जाह्नवीम्
When the great sages saw that Gaṅgā had been drunk, they, most fortunate, brought her forth as a daughter, calling her Jāhnavī.
युवनाश्वस्य पुत्रीं तु कावेरीं जह्नुर् आवहत् गङ्गाशापेन देहार्धं यस्याः पश्चान् नदीकृतम्
Jahnu took Kāverī, the daughter of Yuvanāśva; by Gaṅgā's curse, half her body was later made into a river.
जह्नोस् तु दयितः पुत्रो अजको नाम वीर्यवान् अजकस्य तु दायादो बलाकाश्वो महीपतिः
Jahnu's beloved son was named Ajaka, mighty; Ajaka's heir was Balākāśva, lord of the earth.
बभूव मृगयाशीलः कुशिकस् तस्य चात्मजः पह्नवैः सह संवृद्धो राजा वनचरैः सह
Kuśika, fond of hunting, was his son; the king grew up among the Pahnava people and forest-dwellers.
कुशिकस् तु तपस् तेपे पुत्रम् इन्द्रसमं विभुम् लभेयम् इति तं शक्रस् त्रासाद् अभ्येत्य जज्ञिवान्
Kuśika performed austerities, desiring a son equal to Indra; then Śakra, out of fear, approached and was born as his son.
स गाधिर् अभवद् राजा मघवा कौशिकः स्वयम् विश्वामित्रस् तु गाधेयो विश्वामित्रात् तथाष्टकः
He became King Gādhi; Maghavān himself was born as a Kauśika. Viśvāmitra was Gādhi's son, and from Viśvāmitra came Aṣṭaka.
