तं वृक्षा जगृहुर् गर्भम् एकं चक्रे च मारुतः सोमेनाप्यायितो गोभिः स तदा ववृद्धे शनैः
The trees took hold of that embryo, and the wind made it one; nourished by Soma and by cows, it gradually grew.
मारिषा नाम कन्याभूद् वृक्षाणां चारुलोचना प्राचेतसानां सा भार्या दक्षस्य जननी द्विजाः
A maiden named Māriṣā, beautiful-eyed, was born of the trees; she became the wife of the Prācetasa and the mother of Dakṣa, O twice-born.
स चापि भगवान् कण्डुः क्षीणे तपसि सत्तमः पुरुषोत्तमाख्यं भो विप्रा विष्णोर् आयतनं ययौ
And the blessed Kaṇḍu, when his austerity was exhausted, O best of sages, went to the abode of Viṣṇu called Puruṣottama.
ददर्श परमं क्षेत्रं मुक्तिदं भुवि दुर्लभम् दक्षिणस्योदधेस् तीरे सर्वकामफलप्रदम्
He saw the supreme field, bestowing liberation, rare upon earth, on the southern shore of the ocean, granting all desired fruits.
सुरम्यं वालुकाकीर्णं केतकीवनशोभितम् नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णं नानापक्षिरुतं शिवम्
It was delightful, covered with sand, adorned with ketakī groves, filled with various trees and vines, and resonant with the calls of many birds—auspicious.
सर्वत्र सुखसंचारं सर्वर्तुकुसुमान्वितम् सर्वसौख्यप्रदं नॄणां धन्यं सर्वगुणाकरम्
Everywhere was easy to traverse, adorned with flowers of all seasons, granting all happiness to people, blessed and the source of all virtues.
भृग्वाद्यैः सेवितं पूर्वं मुनिसिद्धवरैस् तथा गन्धर्वैः किंनरैर् यक्षैस् तथान्यैर् मोक्षकाङ्क्षिभिः
It was formerly served by Bhṛgu and others, by sages, siddhas, gandharvas, kinnaras, yakṣas, and others desiring liberation.
ददर्श च हरिं तत्र देवैः सर्वैर् अलंकृतम् ब्राह्मणाद्यैस् तथा वर्णैर् आश्रमस्थैर् निषेवितम्
There he saw Hari, adorned by all the gods, served by Brahmins and others of all castes, and by those dwelling in hermitages.
दृष्ट्वैव स तदा क्षेत्रं देवं च पुरुषोत्तमम् कृतकृत्यम् इवात्मानं मेने स मुनिसत्तमः
Upon seeing that sacred field and the supreme Lord, the best of sages regarded himself as one whose purpose was fulfilled.
तत्रैकाग्रमना भूत्वा चकाराराधनं हरेः ब्रह्मपारमयं कुर्वञ् जपम् एकाग्रमानसः ऊर्ध्वबाहुर् महायोगी स्थित्वासौ मुनिसत्तमः
There, with his mind firmly concentrated, he began to worship Hari, performing the supreme Brahman-chant with single-pointed focus, standing with arms raised, that great yogi, the eminent sage.
ब्रह्मपारं मुने श्रोतुम् इच्छामः परमं शुभम् जपता कण्डुना देवो येनाराध्यत केशवः
O sage, we wish to hear about the supreme and auspicious Brahman-chant, by which Keshava was worshipped through recitation by Kaṇḍu.
पारं परं विष्णुर् अपारपारः परः परेभ्यः परमात्मरूपः स ब्रह्मपारः परपारभूतः परः पराणाम् अपि पारपारः
Vishnu is the supreme beyond the beyond, limitless and transcendent over all; he is the supreme self, the ultimate Brahman, the highest among the highest, and even beyond what is beyond.
स कारणं कारणसंश्रितो ऽपि तस्यापि हेतुः परहेतुहेतुः कार्यो ऽपि चैष सह कर्मकर्तृ रूपैर् अनेकैर् अवतीह सर्वम्
He is the cause, though he abides in the cause of causes; he is the reason for even that, the ultimate cause of all causes; though he is the effect, he manifests here in many forms as the doer of all actions.
ब्रह्म प्रभुर् ब्रह्म स सर्वभूतो ब्रह्म प्रजानां पतिर् अच्युतो ऽसौ ब्रह्माव्ययं नित्यम् अजं स विष्णुर् अपक्षयाद्यैर् अखिलैर् असङ्गः
He is Brahman, the Lord, the essence of all beings, the imperishable master of creatures, the unfailing one; he is the eternal, unborn Vishnu, unattached to all that is subject to decline.
ब्रह्माक्षरम् अजं नित्यं यथासौ पुरुषोत्तमः तथा रागादयो दोषाः प्रयान्तु प्रशमं मम
Just as he is the imperishable, unborn, eternal Brahman, the supreme person, so may passions and other faults be calmed within me.
श्रुत्वा तस्य मुनेर् जाप्यं ब्रह्मपारं द्विजोत्तमाः भक्तिं च परमां ज्ञात्वा सुदृढां पुरुषोत्तमः
Hearing the sage's recitation of the supreme Brahman-chant, O best of twice-born, and recognizing his firm and highest devotion, the Supreme Person—
प्रीत्या स परया देवस् तदासौ भक्तवत्सलः गत्वा तस्य समीपं तु प्रोवाच मधुसूदनः
With supreme affection, the Lord, who is fond of his devotees, then approached him and spoke, O destroyer of Madhu.
मेघगम्भीरया वाचा दिशः संनादयन्न् इव आरुह्य गरुडं विप्रा विनताकुलनन्दनम्
With a voice deep as thunder, resounding in all directions, he ascended Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā, O brāhmaṇas.
मुने ब्रूहि परं कार्यं यत् ते मनसि वर्तते वरदो ऽहम् अनुप्राप्तो वरं वरय सुव्रत
"O sage, speak your highest wish, whatever is in your mind. I have come as the granter of boons; choose your boon, O steadfast one."
श्रुत्वैवं वचनं तस्य देवदेवस्य चक्रिणः चक्षुर् उन्मील्य सहसा ददर्श पुरतो हरिम्
Hearing these words of the Lord of gods, the wielder of the discus, he suddenly opened his eyes and saw Hari standing before him.
अतसीपुष्पसंकाशं पद्मपत्त्रायतेक्षणम् शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिं मुकुटाङ्गदधारिणम्
He beheld him resembling the flax flower, with eyes wide as lotus petals, holding conch, discus, and mace, adorned with crown and armlets.
चतुर्बाहुम् उदाराङ्गं पीतवस्त्रधरं शुभम् श्रीवत्सलक्ष्मसंयुक्तं वनमालाविभूषितम्
With four arms, noble limbs, clad in yellow garments, auspicious, marked with the Śrīvatsa, adorned with a garland of forest flowers.
सर्वलक्षणसंयुक्तं सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् दिव्यचन्दनलिप्ताङ्गं दिव्यमाल्यविभूषितम्
Endowed with all auspicious marks, adorned with every jewel, his divine body anointed with celestial sandal, decorated with heavenly garlands.
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो रोमाञ्चिततनूरुहः दण्डवत् प्रणिपत्योर्व्यां प्रणामम् अकरोत् तदा
Then, overwhelmed with wonder, his hair standing on end, he prostrated himself flat upon the ground and offered his respects.
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म अद्य मे सफलं तपः इत्य् उक्त्वा मुनिशार्दूलास् तं स्तोतुम् उपचक्रमे
"Today my birth is fulfilled, today my austerity is fruitful," thus spoke the foremost of sages and began to praise him.
नारायण हरे कृष्ण श्रीवत्साङ्क जगत्पते जगद्बीज जगद्धाम जगत्साक्षिन् नमो ऽस्तु ते
"O Nārāyaṇa, O Hari, O Krishna, bearer of the Śrīvatsa mark, Lord of the universe, seed of the universe, abode of the universe, witness of the universe—salutations to you!"
अव्यक्त जिष्णो प्रभव प्रधानपुरुषोत्तम पुण्डरीकाक्ष गोविन्द लोकनाथ नमो ऽस्तु ते
Unmanifest, victorious, source of all, supreme among Purushas, lotus-eyed, Govinda, lord of the worlds, I bow to you.
हिरण्यगर्भ श्रीनाथ पद्मनाथ सनातन भूगर्भ ध्रुव ईशान हृषीकेश नमो ऽस्तु ते
Hiranyagarbha, lord of fortune, lord of the lotus, eternal one, earth's womb, steadfast, ruler, master of the senses, I bow to you.
अनाद्यन्तामृताजेय जय त्वं जयतां वर अजिताखण्ड श्रीकृष्ण श्रीनिवास नमो ऽस्तु ते
Without beginning or end, immortal, unconquered, victorious, best among the victorious, undefeated, indivisible, Shri Krishna, abode of fortune, I bow to you.
पर्जन्यधर्मकर्ता च दुष्पार दुरधिष्ठित दुःखार्तिनाशन हरे जलशायिन् नमो ऽस्तु ते
Creator of rain and righteousness, difficult to cross, firmly established, destroyer of suffering and distress, Hari, who lies upon the waters, I bow to you.
