एतद् एव सुजातानां लक्षणं भुवि देहिनाम् कृपार्द्रं यन् मनो नित्यं तेषाम् अप्य् अहितेषु हि
This alone is the mark of those well-born among embodied beings on earth: their hearts are always tender with compassion, even toward those who have harmed them.
महानृपो वनं प्रायात् स राजा मणिकुण्डलः तस्मिञ् शासति राज्यं तु कदाचिद् गौतमं द्विजम्
The great king Maṇikuṇḍala went to the forest; while he was ruling the kingdom, once he met the brāhmaṇa Gautama.
हृतस्वं द्यूतकैः पापैर् अपश्यन् मणिकुण्डलः तम् आदाय द्विजं मित्रं पूजयाम् आस धर्मवित्
Maṇikuṇḍala, having lost his wealth to wicked gamblers, saw that brāhmaṇa friend, took him in, and honored him, being learned in righteousness.
धर्माणां तु प्रभावं तं तस्मै सर्वं न्यवेदयत् स्नापयाम् आस गङ्गायां तं सर्वाघनिवृत्तये
He told him all about the power of righteousness, and bathed him in the Gaṅgā for the removal of all sins.
तेन विप्रेण सर्वैस् तैः स्वकीयैर् गोत्रजैर् वृतः वैश्यैः स्वदेशसंभूतैर् ब्राह्मणस्य तु बान्धवैः
Surrounded by that brāhmaṇa and all his kinsmen, by vaiśyas from his own land, and by the brāhmaṇa's relatives,
वृद्धकौशिकमुख्यैश् च तस्मिन् योगेश्वरान्तिके यज्ञान् इष्ट्वा सुरान् पूज्य ततः स्वर्गम् उपेयिवान्
And by elders led by Kauśika, in the presence of the lord of yogis, having performed sacrifices and worshipped the gods, he then attained heaven.
ततः प्रभृति तत् तीर्थं मृतसंजीवनं विदुः चक्षुस्तीर्थं सयोगेशं स्मरणाद् अपि पुण्यदम् मनःप्रसादजननं सर्वदुर्भावनाशनम्
From that time onward, that sacred place has been known as 'the reviver of the dead,' the holy site of vision, the lord of yogis; even by remembering it, one attains merit. It brings about peace of mind and destroys all evil thoughts.
उर्वशीतीर्थम् आख्यातम् अश्वमेधफलप्रदम् स्नानदानमहादेववासुदेवार्चनादिभिः
The holy place called Urvaśī bestows the fruit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice through bathing, giving gifts, worship of Mahādeva and Vāsudeva, and similar acts.
महेश्वरो यत्र देवो यत्र शार्ङ्गधरो हरिः प्रमतिर् नाम राजासीत् सार्वभौमः प्रतापवान्
There, where the great god Maheśvara and Hari, the wielder of Śārṅga, reside, there was a king named Pramati, a universal sovereign, mighty in power.
रिपूञ् जित्वा जगामाशु इन्द्रलोकं सुरैर् वृतम् तत्रापश्यत् सुरपतिं मरुद्भिः सह नारद
Having conquered his enemies, he quickly went to Indra's realm, surrounded by the gods; there, O Nārada, he saw the lord of the gods together with the Maruts.
जहासेन्द्रं पाशहस्तं प्रमतिः क्षत्रियर्षभः तं हसन्तम् अथालक्ष्य हरिः प्रमतिम् अब्रवीत्
Pramati, the foremost of warriors, seized Indra, who held a noose in his hand. Seeing Indra laughing, Hari spoke to Pramati.
देवालये महाबुद्धे मरुद्भिः क्रीडितैर् अलम् दिशो जित्वा दिवं प्राप्तः कुरु क्रीडां मया सह
"O wise one, in the temple of the gods, enough of playing with the Maruts! Having conquered the directions and reached heaven, come, play with me."
सकषायं हरिवचो निशम्य प्रमतिर् नृपः तथेत्य् उवाच देवेन्द्रं निष्कृतिं कां तु मन्यसे तच् छ्रुत्वा प्रमतेर् वाक्यं सुरराण् नृपम् अब्रवीत्
Hearing Hari's words, King Pramati replied, "So be it." He then said to Indra, "What forfeit do you consider appropriate?" Hearing Pramati's words, the king of the gods replied:
उर्वश्य् एव पणो ऽस्माकं प्राप्या या निखिलैर् मखैः
"Urvaśī herself is our stake, to be won by all through sacrifices."
एतच् छ्रुत्वेन्द्रवचनं प्रमतिः प्राह गर्वितः उर्वशीं निष्कृतिं मन्ये त्वं राजन् किं नु मन्यसे
Hearing Indra's words, Pramati, proud, said, "I consider Urvaśī to be the forfeit. What do you think, O king?"
यद् ब्रवीषि सुरेशान तन् मन्ये ऽहं शतक्रतो प्राहेन्द्रं प्रमतिस् तद्वन् निष्कृत्यै दक्षिणं करम् सवर्म सशरं धर्म्यं देहि दीव्यामहे वयम्
"What you say, O lord of the gods, I accept, O wielder of the thunderbolt," said Pramati to Indra. "For the forfeit, give your right hand, armed and righteous; let us play."
ताव् एवं संविदं कृत्वा देवनायोपतस्थतुः प्रमतिर् जितवांस् तत्र उर्वशीं दैवतस्त्रियम् तां जित्वा प्रमतिः प्राह संरम्भात् तं शतक्रतुम्
Having thus agreed, the two approached the gaming board. There, Pramati, victorious, won Urvaśī, the celestial maiden. Having won her, Pramati angrily addressed Indra.
निष्कृत्यै पुनर् अन्यन् मे पश्चाद् दीव्ये त्वया विभो
"For the forfeit, give me something else; later, you may play again, O mighty one."
देवयोग्यम् अथो वज्रं जैत्रं सरथम् उत्तमम् दीव्ये ऽहं तेन नृपते करेणाप्य् अविचारयन्
"Give me the divine, victorious, and excellent chariot with Vajra, fit for the gods. With that, O king, I will play, without hesitation."
स गृहीत्वा तदा पाशान् अन्यांश् च मणिभूषितान् जितम् इत्य् अब्रवीच् छक्रं प्रमतिः प्रहसंस् तदा
Then, taking the nooses and other jeweled ornaments, Pramati laughed and declared to Indra, "I have won!"
एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे प्रायाद् अक्षज्ञस् तत्र नारद विश्वावसुर् इति ख्यातो गन्धर्वाणां महेश्वरः
At that moment, Nārada, the knower of dice, arrived there. Viśvāvasu, renowned as the lord of the Gandharvas, also came.
गन्धर्वविद्यया राजंस् तया दीव्यामहे त्वया तथेत्य् उक्त्वा स नृपतिर् जितम् इत्य् अब्रवीत् तदा
"O king, let us play with you using the Gandharva art of dice." The king agreed, and then declared victory.
तौ जित्वा नृपतिर् मौर्ख्याद् देवेन्द्रं प्राह कश्मलम्
Having defeated them, the king, out of foolishness, spoke harshly to Indra.
रणे वा देवने वापि न त्वं जेता कथंचन महेन्द्र सततं तस्माद् अस्मदाराधको भव वद केन प्रकारेण जाता देवेन्द्रता तव
"Whether in battle or in play, you can never win, O Mahendra. Therefore, always be devoted to us. Tell me, by what means did you become the lord of the gods?"
तथा प्राहोर्वशीं गर्वाद् गच्छ कर्मकरी भव उर्वशी प्राह देवेषु यथा वर्ते तथा त्वयि वर्तेय सर्वभावेन न मां धिक्कर्तुम् अर्हसि
Then, out of pride, Pramati said to Urvashi: 'Go, become a servant.' Urvashi replied, 'As I behave among the gods, so shall I behave with you, with all my heart; you should not reproach me.'
ततस् तां प्रमतिः प्राह त्वादृश्यः सन्ति चारिकाः त्वं किं विलज्जसे भद्रे गच्छ कर्मकरी भव
Then Pramati said to her, 'There are many women like you. Why are you ashamed, O good lady? Go, become a servant.'
एतच् छ्रुत्वा नृपेणोक्तं गन्धर्वाधिपतिस् तदा चित्रसेन इति ख्यातः सुतो विश्वावसोर् बली
Hearing this, the king spoke to the lord of the Gandharvas, who at that time was known as Citraseṇa, the powerful son of Viśvāvasu.
दीव्ये ऽहं वै त्वया राजन् सर्वेणानेन भूपते राज्येन जीवितेनापि मदीयेन तवापि च
O king, I will contend with you in a game, staking all—my kingdom, my life, and yours as well.
तथेत्य् उक्त्वा पुनर् उभौ चित्रसेननृपोत्तमौ दीव्येताम् अभिसंरब्धौ चित्रसेनो ऽजयत् तदा
Having agreed, both Citraseṇa and the eminent king, filled with eagerness, played the game; then Citraseṇa won.
गान्धर्वैस् तं महापाशैर् बबन्ध नृपतिं तदा चित्रसेनो ऽजयत् सर्वम् उर्वशीमुख्यतः पणैः
Then the Gandharvas bound the king with great bonds; Citraseṇa won everything, especially Urvashi, as the wager.
