अतिथिश् चापवादी च द्वाव् एतौ विश्वबान्धवौ अपवादी हरेत् पापम् अतिथिः स्वर्गसंक्रमः
The guest and the slanderer—these two are kin to all; the slanderer takes away sin, the guest brings passage to heaven.
अभ्यागतं पथि श्रान्तं सावज्ञं यो ऽभिवीक्षते तत्क्षणाद् एव नश्यन्ति तस्य धर्मयशःश्रियः
Whoever looks upon a weary traveler who has arrived on the road with contempt, in that very moment his righteousness, fame, and prosperity are destroyed.
तस्माद् अभ्यागतः श्रान्तो याचे ऽहं त्वां द्विजोत्तम दास्यसे यदि मे कामं तद् भोक्ष्ये ऽहं न चान्यथा
Therefore, O best of twice-born, I am weary and have come to you; I ask you—if you grant my wish, I will eat; otherwise, I will not.
दत्तम् इत्य् एव शाकल्यो भुङ्क्ष्वेत्य् एवाह राक्षसम् ततः प्रोवाच परशुर् अहं राक्षससत्तमः
'Given,' said Shakalya, and 'Eat,' said the Rakshasa; then Parashu spoke: 'I am the foremost of Rakshasas.'
नाहं द्विजस् तव रिपुर् न वृद्धः पलितः कृशः बहूनि मे व्यतीतानि वर्षाणि त्वां प्रपश्यतः
'I am not a twice-born, nor your enemy, nor old, nor gray, nor emaciated; many years have passed as I have watched you.'
शुष्यन्ति मम गात्राणि ग्रीष्मे स्वल्पोदकं यथा तस्मान् नेष्ये सानुगं त्वां भक्षयिष्ये द्विजोत्तम
'My limbs are drying up, as in summer with little water; therefore, I will take you along with your followers and eat you, O best of twice-born.'
श्रुत्वा परशुवाक्यं तच् छाकल्यो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Hearing Parashu's words, Shakalya spoke.
ये महाकुलसंभूता विज्ञातसकलागमाः तत् प्रतिश्रुतम् अभ्येति न जात्व् अत्र विपर्ययम्
Those born in great families, who know all the scriptures, always fulfill what they have promised; there is never any deviation in this.
यथोचितं कुरु सखे तथापि शृणु मे वचः निहन्तुम् अप्य् उद्यतेषु वक्तव्यं हितम् उत्तमैः
'Do as is proper, friend; yet listen to my words: even when one is about to be killed, the wise must speak what is beneficial.'
ब्राह्मणो ऽहं वज्रतनुः सर्वतो रक्षको हरिः पादौ रक्षतु मे विष्णुः शिरो देवो जनार्दनः
'I am a Brahmin, with a body like a thunderbolt; Hari protects me on all sides. May Vishnu guard my feet, may Janardana, the god, guard my head.'
बाहू रक्षतु वाराहः पृष्ठं रक्षतु कूर्मराट् हृदयं रक्षतात् कृष्णो ह्य् अङ्गुली रक्षतान् मृगः
'May Varaha guard my arms, may the king of turtles guard my back; may Krishna guard my heart, and the deer guard my fingers.'
मुखं रक्षतु वागीशो नेत्रे रक्षतु पक्षिगः श्रोत्रं रक्षतु वित्तेशः सर्वतो रक्षताद् भवः नानापत्स्व् एकशरणं देवो नारायणः स्वयम्
'May Vagisha guard my mouth, may the bird-god guard my eyes, may the lord of wealth guard my ears, may Shiva protect me on all sides. In all dangers, the god Narayana himself is my sole refuge.'
एवम् उक्त्वा तु शाकल्यो नय वा भक्ष वा सुखम् मां राक्षसेन्द्र परशो त्वम् इदानीम् अतन्द्रितः
Having spoken thus, Shakalya said, 'Lead me away or eat me at your pleasure, O lord of Rakshasas Parashu, now without delay.'
राक्षसस् तस्य वचनाद् भक्षणाय समुद्यतः नास्त्य् एव हृदये नूनं पापिनां करुणाकणः
At his words, the Rakshasa prepared to eat him; truly, there is not even a drop of compassion in the hearts of the wicked.
दंष्ट्राकरालवदनो गत्वा तस्यान्तिकं तदा ब्राह्मणं तं निरीक्ष्यैवं परशुर् वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
With a face made fierce by protruding fangs, Paraśur went to that place; seeing the Brahmin there, he spoke these words.
शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिं त्वां पश्ये ऽहं द्विजोत्तम सहस्रपादशिरसं सहस्राक्षकरं विभुम्
O best of twice-born, I see you holding conch, discus, and mace, possessing a thousand feet, heads, eyes, and hands, O Lord.
सर्वभूतैकनिलयं छन्दोरूपं जगन्मयम् त्वाम् अद्य विप्र पश्यामि नास्ति ते पूर्वकं वपुः
O Brahmin, today I behold you as the sole abode of all beings, of Vedic form, pervading the universe; you have no previous body.
तस्मात् प्रसादये विप्र त्वम् एव शरणं भव ज्ञानं देहि महाबुद्धे तीर्थं ब्रूह्य् अघनिष्कृतिम्
Therefore, I implore you, O Brahmin, be my refuge; grant me knowledge, O great-minded one, and tell me the sacred means for removing sin.
महतां दर्शनं ब्रह्मञ् जायते नहि निष्फलम् द्वेषाद् अज्ञानतो वापि प्रसङ्गाद् वा प्रमादतः
The sight of the great, O Brahmin, is never fruitless; whether by hatred, ignorance, association, or carelessness, it brings results.
अयसः स्पर्शसंस्पर्शो रुक्मत्वायैव जायते
Contact with iron, through touch, leads to its becoming gold.
एतद् वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य राक्षसेन समीरितम् शाकल्यः कृपया प्राह वरदा सा सरस्वती
Hearing these words spoken by the Rākṣasa, Śākalya, moved by compassion, spoke; Sarasvatī, the bestower of boons, also spoke.
तवाचिराद् दैत्यपते ततः स्तुहि जनार्दनम् मनोरथफलप्राप्तौ नान्यन् नारायणस्तुतेः
Soon, O lord of the Daityas, praise Janārdana; for the fulfillment of your desire, there is no other way than praise of Nārāyaṇa.
किंचिद् अप्य् अस्ति लोके ऽस्मिन् कारणं शृणु राक्षस प्रसन्ना तव सा देवी मद्वाक्याच् च भविष्यति
Listen, O Rākṣasa, there is some cause in this world; that goddess is pleased with you, and by my words, it shall come to pass.
तथेत्य् उक्त्वा स परशुर् गङ्गां त्रैलोक्यपावनीम् स्नात्वा शुचिर् यतमना गङ्गाम् अभिमुखः स्थितः
Saying 'so be it,' Paraśur bathed in the Ganges, purifier of the three worlds; purified and focused, he stood facing the Ganges.
तत्रापश्यद् दिव्यरूपां दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनाम् सरस्वतीं जगद्धात्रीं शाकल्यवचने स्थिताम्
There he saw Sarasvatī, of divine form, adorned with celestial fragrance, the sustainer of the world, present as spoken by Śākalya.
जगज्जाड्यहरां विश्वजननीं भुवनेश्वरीम् ताम् उवाच विनीतात्मा परशुर् गतकल्मषः
He saw her as the remover of the world's dullness, the mother of all, the ruler of the earth; Paraśur, with a humble heart and freed from sin, addressed her.
गुरुः शाकल्य इत्य् आह माकान्तं स्तुहि विध्वजम् तव प्रसादात् सा शक्तिर् यथा मे स्यात् तथा कुरु
Śākalya, the teacher, said: 'Praise the creator without delay; by your favor, may that power come to me—do so accordingly.'
तथास्त्व् इति च सा प्राह परशुं श्रीसरस्वती सरस्वत्याः प्रसादेन परशुस् तं जनार्दनम्
Sarasvatī replied, 'So be it.' By the grace of Sarasvatī, Paraśur praised Janārdana.
तुष्टाव विविधैर् वाक्यैस् ततस् तुष्टो ऽभवद् धरिः वरं प्रादाद् राक्षसाय कृपासिन्धुर् जनार्दनः
He praised Hari with various words; then Hari became pleased and, as the ocean of compassion, granted a boon to the Rākṣasa.
यद् यन् मनोगतं रक्षस् तत् तत् सर्वं भविष्यति
Whatever is in your mind, O Rākṣasa, all that shall come to pass.
