तत्राजयन् नैव सुरा दानवा जयिनो ऽभवन् पराङ्मुखाः सुरगणाः संगराद् गतचेतसः
There, the gods did not win, but the demons were victorious; the hosts of gods, defeated in battle, turned away, their minds shaken.
माम् अभ्येत्य समूचुस् ते देहि नो ऽभयकारणम् तान् अहं प्रत्यवोचं वै गङ्गां गच्छत सर्वशः
They approached me and said, 'Grant us a cause for safety.' I replied to them, 'Go all of you to the Gaṅgā.'
तत्र वै गौतमीतीरे स्तुत्वा देवं महेश्वरम् अनपायनिरायाससहजानन्दसुन्दरम्
There, on the bank of the Gautamī, they praised the god Maheśvara, who is naturally blissful, free from decline and effort, and beautiful.
लप्स्यते सर्वविबुधा जयहेतुर् महेश्वरात् तथेत्य् उक्त्वा सुरगणाः स्तुवन्ति स्म महेश्वरम्
All the gods will obtain from Maheśvara the cause of victory; having said 'so be it,' the hosts of gods began to praise Maheśvara.
तपो ऽतप्यन्त केचिद् वै ननृतुश् च तथापरे अस्नापयंश् च केचिच् च ऽपूजयंश् च तथापरे
Some performed austerities, others danced, some bathed, and others worshipped.
ततः प्रसन्नो भगवाञ् शूलपाणिर् महेश्वरः देवान् अथाब्रवीत् तुष्टो व्रियतां यद् अभीप्सितम्
Then the blessed Maheśvara, wielder of the trident, being pleased, spoke to the gods: 'Choose whatever you desire.'
देवा ऊचुः सुरपतिं विजयाय ददस्व नः पुरुषं परमश्लाघ्यं रणेषु पुरतः स्थितम्
The gods said, 'O lord of gods, grant us for victory a most praiseworthy man, one who stands at the forefront in battles.'
यद्बाहुबलम् आश्रित्य भवामः सुखिनो वयम् तथेत्य् उवाच भगवान् देवान् प्रति महेश्वरः
'Relying on whose strength of arms we may be happy.' The blessed Maheśvara replied to the gods, 'So be it.'
आत्मनस् तेजसा कश्चिन् निर्मितः परमेष्ठिना मन्युनामानम् अत्युग्रं देवसैन्यपुरोगमम्
By his own energy, the Supreme Lord fashioned someone named Manyu, exceedingly fierce, as the leader of the divine army.
तं नत्वा त्रिदशाः सर्वे शिवं नत्वा स्वम् आलयम् मन्युना सह चाभ्येत्य पुनर् युद्धाय तस्थिरे
Having bowed to him, all the gods, after bowing to Śiva and returning to their own abode, stood ready for battle together with Manyu.
युद्धे स्थित्वा तु दनुजैर् दैतेयैश् च महाबलैः विबुधा जातसंनद्धा मन्युम् ऊचुः पुरः स्थिताः
Having taken their stand in battle against the mighty Danujas and Daityas, the gods, fully armed, spoke to Manyu as he stood before them.
सामर्थ्यं तव पश्यामः पश्चाद् योत्स्यामहे परैः तस्माद् दर्शय चात्मानं मन्यो ऽस्माकं युयुत्सताम्
We wish to see your power; afterwards, we shall fight with the enemies. Therefore, reveal yourself, O Manyu, for we are eager for battle.
तद् देववचनं श्रुत्वा मन्युर् आह स्मयन्न् इव
Hearing these words of the gods, Manyu replied, as if smiling.
जनिता मम देवेशः सर्वज्ञः सर्वदृक् प्रभुः यः सर्वं वेत्ति सर्वेषां धामनाम मनःस्थितम्
My creator is the Lord of the gods, the all-knowing, the all-seeing master, who knows everything—every being, every abode, and all that dwells in the mind.
नैव कश्चिच् च तं वेत्ति यः सर्वं वेत्ति सर्वदा अमूर्तं मूर्तम् अप्य् एतद् वेत्ति कर्ता जगन्मयः
No one knows him, yet he knows all at all times. Formless and yet with form, he is the doer, the one who pervades the universe.
परो ऽसौ भगवान् साक्षात् तथा दिव्य् अन्तरिक्षगः कस् तस्य रूपं यो वेद कस्य कर्ता जगन्मयः
He is the supreme Lord, manifest, divine, moving through the heavens. Who knows his form? Who is the maker of him who is the universe itself?
एवंविधाद् अहं जातो मां कथं वेत्तुम् अर्हथ अथवा द्रष्टुकामा वै भवन्तो मानुपश्यत
From such a one I am born; how then can you truly know me? Yet, if you wish to see, then behold me as I am.
इत्य् उक्त्वा दर्शयाम् आस मन्यू रूपं स्वकं महत् तार्तीयचक्षुषोद्भूतं भवस्य परमेष्ठिनः
Having spoken thus, Manyu revealed his great form, arisen from the third eye of the supreme Lord Bhava.
तेजसा संभृतं रूपं यतः सर्वं तद् उच्यते पौरुषं पुरुषेष्व् एव अहंकारश् च जन्तुषु
That form, filled with radiance, is called the essence of manliness among men, and the sense of ego among living beings.
क्रोधः सर्वस्य यो भीम उपसंहारकृद् भवेत् तं शंकरप्रतिनिधिं ज्वलन्तं निजतेजसा
He is the terrible wrath of all, the one who brings about destruction, the blazing representative of Shankara, shining with his own energy.
सर्वायुधधरं दृष्ट्वा प्रणेमुः सर्वदेवताः वित्रेसुर् दैत्यदनुजाः कृताञ्जलिपुटाः सुराः
Seeing him bearing all weapons, all the gods bowed down; the Daityas and Danujas were terrified, while the gods stood with joined palms.
भूत्वा मन्युम् अथोचुस् ते त्वं सेनानीः प्रभो भव त्वया दत्तम् इदं राज्यं मन्यो भोक्ष्यामहे वयम्
Then, having become Manyu, they said: 'You be our commander, O Lord. With the kingdom granted by you, O Manyu, we shall enjoy rulership.'
तस्मात् सर्वेषु कार्येषु जेता त्वं जयवर्धनः त्वम् इन्द्रस् त्वं च वरुणो लोकपालास् त्वम् एव च
Therefore, in all undertakings, you are the conqueror, the increaser of victory; you are Indra, you are Varuna, and you alone are the guardians of the worlds.
अस्मासु सर्वदेवेषु प्रविश त्वं जयाय वै मन्युः प्रोवाच तान् सर्वान् विना मत्तो न किंचन
Enter into all of us gods for victory, indeed. Manyu said to them all: 'Without me, there is nothing.'
सर्वेष्व् अन्तः प्रविष्टो ऽहं न मां जानाति कश्चन स एव भगवान् मन्युस् ततो जातः पृथक् पृथक्
I have entered into all, yet no one knows me. That very Lord is Manyu, who then appears separately in each.
स एव रुद्ररूपी स्याद् रुद्रो मन्युः शिवो ऽभवत् स्थावरं जङ्गमं चैव सर्वं व्याप्तं हि मन्युना
He indeed takes the form of Rudra; Rudra is Manyu, who became Shiva. All that is moving and unmoving is pervaded by Manyu.
तम् अवाप्य सुराः सर्वे जयम् आपुश् च संगरे जयो मन्युश् च शौर्यं च ईशतेजःसमुद्भवम्
Having obtained him, all the gods gained victory in battle; victory, courage, and the power of the Lord arose from Manyu.
मन्युना जयम् आप्याथ कृत्वा दैत्यैश् च संगमम् यथागतं ययुः सर्वे मन्युना परिरक्षिताः
Having attained victory through Manyu and having engaged with the Daityas, all returned as they had come, protected by Manyu.
यत्र वै गौतमीतीरे शिवम् आराध्य ते सुराः मन्युम् आपुर् जयं चैव मन्युतीर्थं तद् उच्यते
There, on the bank of the Gautamī, the gods worshipped Śiva and attained anger and victory; therefore, that place is called Manyutīrtha.
उत्पत्तिं च तथा मन्योर् यो नरः प्रयतः स्मरेत् विजयो जायते तस्य न कैश्चित् परिभूयते
Whoever, with pure intent, remembers the origin of Manyu there, gains victory and is not overcome by anyone.
