The supremely righteous Yati took as wife a daughter of Kakutstha named Gā, but, embracing liberation, Yati became a sage united with Brahman.
Of those five, Yayati, having conquered this earth, took as wife Devayani, the daughter of Ushanas.
And Sharmishtha, the Asura maiden, daughter of Vrishaparvan, bore Yadu and Turvasu to Yayati through Devayani.
Sharmishtha, daughter of Vrishaparvan, bore Druhyu, Anu, and Puru; to him, pleased Indra gave a radiant chariot.
That chariot, adorned with golden ornaments, divine, yoked with celestial, swift, white horses, by which he accomplished his tasks.
With that foremost chariot, in six nights, Yayati, invincible in battle, conquered the earth, as well as the gods and the Danavas.
That chariot then belonged to all the Kauravas, from Janamejaya, son of Samvartavasu, among the Kauravas.
That chariot of King Parikshit, son of Kuru, perished by the curse of the wise Garga.
For King Janamejaya, in time, killed Garga's child, and thus incurred the sin of Brahmin-slaying.
That royal sage, marked by the smell of iron, wandered here and there, abandoned by citizens and countrymen, never finding peace.
Then, tormented by suffering, finding no solace anywhere, the king sought refuge with the foremost Brahmin, Shaunaka.
The wise Shaunaka caused King Janamejaya to perform an Ashvamedha sacrifice, for the king's purification, O best of twice-born.
Then the iron smell vanished; after the completion of the ritual bath, the king's divine chariot came under the control of the lord of Chedi.
Given by the pleased Indra, Brihadratha obtained it; from Brihadratha, in succession, it passed to King Barhadratha.
Then, having slain Jarasandha, Bhima, the delight of the Kauravas, out of affection, gave that excellent chariot to Vasudeva.
Yayati, having conquered the earth with its seven continents and oceans, then divided the kingdom into five parts among his sons, O descendant of Nahusha.
Yayati appointed his eldest son Yadu in the eastern direction, and in the center, he anointed Puru as king, O descendant of Nahusha.
In the southeastern direction, the wise king established Turvasu; by them, this entire earth with its seven continents and cities was governed.
Even today, according to their allotted regions, the people are protected by righteousness; I will now tell you about their descendants, O best of sages.
Laying down his bow and arrows, along with five heroic men, the king, burdened by old age, entrusted his responsibilities to his kinsmen.
Having set aside his weapons, the lord of the earth wandered the land; the undefeated king Yayati became content.
Thus dividing the earth, Yayati said to Yadu: 'Take my old age upon yourself, my son, in exchange for another deed.'
'With your youthful form, I would roam this earth, having placed my old age upon you.' Thus Yadu replied to him.
'A request has already been promised by me to a Brahmin; without fulfilling that, O king, I will not accept your old age.'
'There are many faults in old age, caused by eating and drinking; therefore, O king, I am not able to accept your old age.'
'You have many sons, O king, dearer to you than I; choose another son, O knower of dharma, to accept it.'
Thus addressed by Yadu, the king, filled with anger, Yayati, foremost among speakers, reproached his son and spoke.
'What other ashram do you have, or what other dharma is prescribed, that you disregard me, O foolish one, when I am your teacher?'
Thus speaking to Yadu, O Brahmins, he, being angry, cursed him: 'You shall be without sovereignty over your people, O fool; there is no doubt.'
He spoke likewise to Druhyu, Turvasu, and Anu, O best of twice-born; the king was rejected by them as well.
