For sixty thousand years, he is born as a worm in excrement, because of taking land that was given by oneself or by another; there is no greater sin than this anywhere.
There is a great and terrible sin in this; therefore, we do not accept it again. If this is so for land given by oneself, what then when taking land given by another?
Even so, we accept the gift of land in the form of a purchase. When this was agreed, the gods gave a Kapila cow of auspicious marks—
On the southern bank of the Ganga, at the place of the land, they gave her. There, Vishnu himself, in embodied form, stands, granting both enjoyment and liberation.
That confluence with the Kapila cow destroys all heaps of sin. There, from the water of the gift, a river arose, called Kapila.
By the gift of land, even from fertile earth, the gift of a cow is considered supreme. The sage, having made the exchange, accomplished the protection of the world.
Where this event took place at the holy site, it is called Gotirtha. There, a hundred holy places, bestowing merit, are said to exist by the wise.
By bathing and giving gifts there, one attains the fruit of giving land. That confluence with the Ganga is known as the Kapila confluence.
There is a holy place called Shankhahraḍa, where the bearer of the conch and mace resides. Bathing there and beholding him, one is freed from the bonds of worldly existence.
There, I will recount an event that bestows both enjoyment and liberation: In the beginning of the Krita Yuga, the singers of Sama for Brahma—
Rakshasas of many forms, born from the storehouse of the cosmic egg, came, intoxicated with power and armed, to devour Brahma.
Then I spoke to Vishnu, the teacher of the world, for protection. That Vishnu, to destroy those Rakshasas, became ready with his discus.
Having cut down the Rakshasas with his discus, he filled the conch. Then, making the earth free of thorns and heaven free of enmity—
Then, in great joy, Hari filled the conch. After that, all the Rakshasas were completely destroyed.
Where all this took place, by the power of Vishnu's conch, that is called Shankhatirtha, which brings all welfare to people.
It grants all desired things, is meritorious, auspicious when remembered, bestows long life and health, and increases wealth and sons.
By remembering or reciting it, one attains all desires; there, O sage, it is equal to ten thousand sacred places and removes all sins.
The sacred places, numbering ten thousand, are destroyers of all sins; their power is known and spoken of by the god Maheśvara.
There is truly no other representative of the destruction of sin equal to these anywhere.
The holy place called Kiṣkindhā is said to grant all desires to people; it brings about the pacification of all sins, for there Bhava is present.
I will describe its true nature with care—listen, O Nārada. Long ago, Rāma, son of Daśaratha, killed Rāvaṇa, the terror of the worlds.
Together with the dwellers of Kiṣkindhā, he slew Rāvaṇa on the battlefield, along with his sons and army; having slain his enemy, he retrieved Sītā.
With his brother Saumitri, the mighty monkeys, and the powerful Vibhīṣaṇa, the king returned, accompanied by the gods.
Having performed auspicious rites, glorious Rāma shone in the celestial Puṣpaka chariot, which once belonged to the lord of wealth and moved at will with great speed.
They all journeyed to Ayodhyā; as they went, Rāma, the refuge of those seeking shelter and destroyer of enemies, beheld the Gaṅgā.
He saw the Gautamī, purifier of the world, bestower of all desires, devoted to removing the sorrows of mind and eyes.
Seeing her, the glorious king entered the bank of the Gaṅgā; beholding her, the king spoke with a voice choked with joy, addressing all the monkeys, led by Hanumān, O sage.
By her power, O monkeys, my father, the lord, was freed from all sins and then attained heaven.
She is the mother of all beings, giver of enjoyment, and even grants liberation; she destroys even the most terrible sins. There is no other river here equal to her.
By her power, enemies and misfortunes are always destroyed; Vibhīṣaṇa attains constant friendship, Sītā was recovered, and Hanumān became a kinsman.
