He sat absorbed in thought, sighing again and again; in that very moment, the Rākṣasas dwelling in Laṅkā arrived.
Sugrīva, Hanumān, Aṅgada, Jāmbavān, and all the other Vānaras came, led by Vibhīṣaṇa.
They approached and reached the king, who was seated upon the throne; but not seeing Sītā, Hanumān and Aṅgada, adorned with golden armlets, were perplexed.
They asked, 'Where has Mother Sītā, born from the earth, gone? Only Rāma is seen here.' The gatekeepers replied, 'She has been abandoned by Rāma.'
While the guardians of the worlds looked on, and the noble lady was being spoken of there, Sītā entered the fire for purification; yet the king remained unrestrained.
Because of words arising among the people, Rāma abandoned his beloved; saying, 'Let us die,' they returned again to Gautamī.
Rāma, together with the citizens of Ayodhyā, approached those two; having arrived at Gautamī, they engaged in supreme austerity.
Remembering again and again, sighing, they longed for Sītā, mother of the world, having renounced attachment to worldly existence, eager to serve Gautamī.
Rāma, lord of the three worlds, truly arrived with his brother; after bathing in the Gautamī, he devoted himself to the worship of Śiva.
Surrounded by thousands, he cast off all sorrow; the place where this event occurred is called Sahasrakuṇḍa.
There are ten other holy places there, all bestowing every desired result; bathing and giving gifts there yield a thousandfold reward.
On the bank of the sacred Gautamī, the great sages beginning with Vasiṣṭha performed a sacrifice that destroys all sin and rescues from every calamity.
In the thousand-numbered pools, by the grace of the earth, that great ascetic obtained all the desires he wished for.
By the favor of the river Gautamī, the destroyer of Rākṣasas, that holy place known as Sahasrakuṇḍa became of great merit.
That is called the Kapila Tīrtha, also remembered as Aṅgirasa; it is also called Āditya, and is said to be Saiṃhikeyam.
On the southern bank of the Gautamī, O best of sages, Aṅgiras performed sacrifices to the Ādityas, and they gave him the southern land as a gift.
Then the Ādityas departed for austerity from the Aṅgiras; that land, becoming Saiṃhikī, devoured all people.
All the people who dwelled there reported this to the Aṅgiras, frightened, having learned by knowledge that the land was Saiṃhikī.
Then, following the Adityas, the Angirases spoke these words: 'Let them take back the land that was given.' But the Adityas replied, 'No.'
The wise do not accept as a gift land that has been taken back, whether it was given by oneself or by another; whoever seizes land, whether self-given or given by another—
For sixty thousand years, he is born as a worm in excrement, because of taking land that was given by oneself or by another; there is no greater sin than this anywhere.
There is a great and terrible sin in this; therefore, we do not accept it again. If this is so for land given by oneself, what then when taking land given by another?
Even so, we accept the gift of land in the form of a purchase. When this was agreed, the gods gave a Kapila cow of auspicious marks—
On the southern bank of the Ganga, at the place of the land, they gave her. There, Vishnu himself, in embodied form, stands, granting both enjoyment and liberation.
That confluence with the Kapila cow destroys all heaps of sin. There, from the water of the gift, a river arose, called Kapila.
By the gift of land, even from fertile earth, the gift of a cow is considered supreme. The sage, having made the exchange, accomplished the protection of the world.
Where this event took place at the holy site, it is called Gotirtha. There, a hundred holy places, bestowing merit, are said to exist by the wise.
By bathing and giving gifts there, one attains the fruit of giving land. That confluence with the Ganga is known as the Kapila confluence.
