सहस्रकुण्डम् आख्यातं तीर्थं वेदविदो विदुः यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण सुखी संपद्यते नरः
The learned know of a tirtha called Sahasrakunda; by merely remembering it, a person attains happiness.
पुरा दाशरथी रामः सेतुं बद्ध्वा महार्णवे लङ्कां दग्ध्वा रिपून् हत्वा रावणादीन् रणे शरैः
Long ago, Rama, son of Dasharatha, after building a bridge across the great ocean, burned Lanka, and slew his enemies, Ravana and others, in battle with arrows.
वैदेहीं च समासाद्य रामो वचनम् अब्रवीत् पश्यत्सु लोकपालेषु तस्याचार्ये पुरः स्थिते
Rama, having approached Vaidehi, spoke these words as the guardians of the worlds watched, and her teacher stood before her.
अग्नौ शुद्धिगतां सीतां रामो लक्ष्मणसंनिधौ एहि वैदेहि शुद्धासि अङ्कम् आरोढुम् अर्हसि
Rama, in the presence of Lakshmana, addressed Sita, who had attained purity through fire: 'Come, Vaidehi, you are pure; you deserve to ascend my lap.'
नेत्य् उवाच तदा श्रीमान् अङ्गदो हनुमांस् तथा अयोध्यायां तु वैदेहि सार्धं यामः सुहृज्जनैः
Then the illustrious Angada and Hanuman said, 'No, let us go to Ayodhya together with Vaidehi and our friends.'
तत्र शुद्धिम् अवाप्याथ पुनर् भ्रातृषु मातृषु लौकिकेष्व् अपि पश्यत्सु ततः शुद्धा नृपात्मजा
There, having attained purification, and as brothers, mothers, and even ordinary people watched, the princess was declared pure.
अयोध्यायां सुपुण्ये ऽह्नि अङ्कम् आरोढुम् अर्हसि अस्याश् चरित्रविषये संदेहः कस्य जायते
On a most auspicious day in Ayodhya, you deserve to ascend the lap; whose doubt arises regarding her conduct?
लोकापवादस् तद् अपि निरस्यः स्वजनेषु हि तयोर् वाक्यम् अनादृत्य लक्ष्मणः सविभीषणः
Even so, the rumor among people must be dismissed, especially among their own; disregarding their words, Lakshmana, together with Vibhishana, acted.
रामश् च जाम्बवांश् चैव ताम् आह्वयन् नृपात्मजाम् स्वस्तीत्य् उक्ता देवताभी राज्ञो ऽङ्कं चारुरोह सा
Rama and Jambavan called the princess; the gods said 'be well,' and she ascended the king's lap.
मुदितास् ते ययुः शीघ्रं पुष्पकेण विराजता अयोध्यां नगरीं प्राप्य तथा राज्यं स्वकं तु यत्
Joyful, they quickly departed in the splendid Pushpaka; reaching the city of Ayodhya, they obtained their own kingdom.
मुदितास् ते ऽभवन् सर्वे सदा रामानुवर्तिनः ततः कतिपयाहेषु अनार्येभ्यो विरूपिकाम्
All of them remained ever joyful, always devoted to Rama; then, after a few days, from the ignoble came a disfiguring word.
वाचं श्रुत्वा स तत्याज गुर्विणीं ताम् अयोनिजाम् मिथ्यापवादम् अपि हि न सहन्ते कुलोन्नताः
Hearing that heavy, false accusation against her, not born of a womb, he abandoned her; noble families do not endure even false reproach.
वाल्मीकेर् मुनिमुख्यस्य आश्रमस्य समीपतः तत्याज लक्ष्मणः सीताम् अदुष्टां रुदतीं रुदन्
Near the hermitage of the foremost sage Valmiki, Lakshmana abandoned Sita, innocent and weeping, as he himself wept.
नोल्लङ्घ्याज्ञा गुरूणाम् इत्य् असौ तद् अकरोद् भिया ततः कतिपयाहेषु व्यतीतेषु नृपात्मजः

लवः कुशश् च विख्यातौ नारदाव् इव गायकौ रामायणं समग्रं तद् गन्धर्वाव् इव सुस्वरौ
Lava and Kusha, renowned like the singing sages Narada, sang the entire Ramayana, melodious as Gandharvas.
रामस्य चरितं सर्वं गायमानौ समीयतुः यज्ञवाटं राजसुतौ हेतुभिर् लक्षितौ तदा
The royal sons, singing all the deeds of Rama, approached the sacrificial ground, distinguished by their qualities.
रामपुत्राव् उभौ शूरौ वैदेह्यास् तनयाव् इति ताव् आनीय ततः पुत्राव् अभिषिच्य यथाक्रमम्
Both sons of Rama, heroic and known as Vaidehi's children, were brought forth; then, the sons were consecrated in order.
अङ्कारूढौ ततः कृत्वा सस्वजे तौ पुनः पुनः संसारदुःखखिन्नानाम् अगतीनां शरीरिणाम्
Then, having placed them on his lap, he embraced them again and again; for those afflicted by the sorrows of existence, for the lost among embodied beings...
पुत्रालिङ्गनम् एवात्र परं विश्रान्तिकारणम् मुहुर् आलिङ्ग्य तौ पुत्रौ मुहुः स्वजति चुम्बति
Here, the embrace of one's children is the highest cause of rest; repeatedly embracing his sons, he constantly caresses and kisses them.
किम् अप्य् अन्तर् ध्यायति च निःश्वसत्य् अपि वै मुहुः एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे प्राप्ता राक्षसा लङ्कवासिनः
He sat absorbed in thought, sighing again and again; in that very moment, the Rākṣasas dwelling in Laṅkā arrived.
सुग्रीवो हनुमांश् चैव अङ्गदो जाम्बवांस् तथा अन्ये च वानराः सर्वे विभीषणपुरःसराः
Sugrīva, Hanumān, Aṅgada, Jāmbavān, and all the other Vānaras came, led by Vibhīṣaṇa.
ते चागत्य नृपं प्राप्ताः सिंहासनम् उपस्थितम् सीताम् अदृष्ट्वा हनुमान् अङ्गदः कनकाङ्गदः
They approached and reached the king, who was seated upon the throne; but not seeing Sītā, Hanumān and Aṅgada, adorned with golden armlets, were perplexed.
क्व गतायोनिजा माता एको रामो ऽत्र दृश्यते रामेण सा परित्यक्ता इत्य् ऊचुर् द्वारपालकाः
They asked, 'Where has Mother Sītā, born from the earth, gone? Only Rāma is seen here.' The gatekeepers replied, 'She has been abandoned by Rāma.'
पश्यत्सु लोकपालेषु आर्ये तत्र प्रवादिनि अग्नौ शुद्धिगतां सीतां किं तु राजा निरङ्कुशः
While the guardians of the worlds looked on, and the noble lady was being spoken of there, Sītā entered the fire for purification; yet the king remained unrestrained.
उत्पन्नैर् लौकिकैर् वाक्यै रामस् त्यजति तां प्रियाम् मरिष्याव इति ह्य् उक्त्वा गौतमीं पुनर् ईयतुः
Because of words arising among the people, Rāma abandoned his beloved; saying, 'Let us die,' they returned again to Gautamī.
रामस् तौ पृष्ठतो ऽभ्येत्य अयोध्यावासिभिः सह आगत्य गौतमीं तत्र ऽकुर्वंस् ते परमं तपः
Rāma, together with the citizens of Ayodhyā, approached those two; having arrived at Gautamī, they engaged in supreme austerity.
स्मारं स्मारं निश्वसन्तस् तां सीतां लोकमातरम् संसारास्थाविरहिता गौतमीसेवनोत्सुकाः
Remembering again and again, sighing, they longed for Sītā, mother of the world, having renounced attachment to worldly existence, eager to serve Gautamī.
लोकत्रयपतिः साक्षाद् रामो ऽनुजसमन्वितः प्राप्तः स्नात्वा च गौतम्यां शिवाराधनतत्परः
Rāma, lord of the three worlds, truly arrived with his brother; after bathing in the Gautamī, he devoted himself to the worship of Śiva.
परितापं जहौ सर्वं सहस्रपरिवारितः यत्र चासीत् स वृत्तान्तः सहस्रकुण्डम् उच्यते
Surrounded by thousands, he cast off all sorrow; the place where this event occurred is called Sahasrakuṇḍa.
