ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रियाश् चैव वैश्याः शूद्रास् तथैव च शलात्मज आर्ष्टिसेणस् तनयस् तस्य काश्यपः
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras likewise; Śala's son was Ārṣṭiseṇa, whose son was Kāśyapa.
काशस्य काशिपो राजा पुत्रो दीर्घतपास् तथा धनुस् तु दीर्घतपसो विद्वान् धन्वन्तरिस् ततः
Kāśa's son was the king Kāśipa, whose son was Dīrghatapas; Dīrghatapas's wise son was Dhanvantari.
तपसो ऽन्ते सुमहतो जातो वृद्धस्य धीमतः पुनर् धन्वन्तरिर् देवो मानुषेष्व् इह जन्मनि
At the end of his great austerity, Dhanvantari was born again as the wise Vṛddha; Dhanvantari became a god, incarnated among humans here.
तस्य गेहे समुत्पन्नो देवो धन्वन्तरिस् तदा काशिराजो महाराजः सर्वरोगप्रणाशनः
In his house was born the god Dhanvantari; then the great king of Kāśi, destroyer of all diseases.
आयुर्वेदं भरद्वाजात् प्राप्येह स भिषक्क्रियः तम् अष्टधा पुनर् व्यस्य शिष्येभ्यः प्रत्यपादयत्
Having obtained the science of Ayurveda from Bharadvāja, he became a physician here; he divided it into eight parts and imparted it to his disciples.
धन्वन्तरेस् तु तनयः केतुमान् इति विश्रुतः अथ केतुमतः पुत्रो वीरो भीमरथः स्मृतः
Dhanvantari's son was Ketumān, well-known; Ketumān's son was the heroic Bhīmaratha.
पुत्रो भीमरथस्यापि दिवोदासः प्रजेश्वरः दिवोदासस् तु धर्मात्मा वाराणस्यधिपो ऽभवत्
Bhīmaratha's son was Divodāsa, lord of subjects; Divodāsa, righteous in soul, became ruler of Vārāṇasī.
एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु पुरीं वाराणसीं द्विजाः शून्यां निवेशयाम् आस क्षेमको नाम राक्षसः
At that very time, a rakṣasa named Kṣemaka settled the city of Vārāṇasī, which was empty of twice-born men.
शप्ता हि सा मतिमता निकुम्भेन महात्मना शून्या वर्षसहस्रं वै भवित्री तु न संशयः
She was cursed by the wise and great Nikumbha, and for a thousand years she would remain empty; of this there is no doubt.
तस्यां हि शप्तमात्रायां दिवोदासः प्रजेश्वरः विषयान्ते पुरीं रम्यां गोमत्यां संन्यवेशयत्
At the very moment of that curse, Divodāsa, lord of people, established a beautiful city at the edge of his domain, on the Gomati.
भद्रश्रेण्यस्य पूर्वं तु पुरी वाराणसी अभूत् भद्रश्रेण्यस्य पुत्राणां शतम् उत्तमधन्विनाम्
Previously, Vārāṇasī was the city of Bhadraśreṇya; it belonged to the hundred sons of Bhadraśreṇya, all excellent archers.
हत्वा निवेशयाम् आस दिवोदासो नराधिपः भद्रश्रेण्यस्य तद् राज्यं हृतं येन बलीयसा
Having slain them, King Divodāsa settled there; he seized the kingdom of Bhadraśreṇya by his superior strength.
भद्रश्रेण्यस्य पुत्रस् तु दुर्दमो नाम विश्रुतः दिवोदासेन बालेति घृणया स विसर्जितः
Bhadraśreṇya's son, renowned as Durdama, was driven away by Divodāsa, out of compassion, while still a child.
हैहयस्य तु दायाद्यं हृतवान् वै महीपतिः आजह्रे पितृदायाद्यं दिवोदासहृतं बलात्
The king took the inheritance of the Haihayas; he forcibly claimed the ancestral domain that Divodāsa had seized.
भद्रश्रेण्यस्य पुत्रेण दुर्दमेन महात्मना वैरस्यान्तो महाभागाः कृतश् चात्मीयतेजसा
By the great-souled Durdama, son of Bhadraśreṇya, the enmity was ended, O illustrious ones, through his own power.
दिवोदासाद् दृषद्वत्यां वीरो जज्ञे प्रतर्दनः तेन बालेन पुत्रेण प्रहृतं तु पुनर् बलम्
From Divodāsa, in Dṛṣadvatī, a hero was born named Pratardana; by this young son, the strength was again challenged.
प्रतर्दनस्य पुत्रौ द्वौ वत्सभर्गौ सुविश्रुतौ वत्सपुत्रो ह्य् अलर्कस् तु संनतिस् तस्य चात्मजः
Pratardana had two sons, Vatsabharga and Vatsa, both widely renowned; Vatsa's son was Alarka, and Saṃnati was his own son.
अलर्कस् तस्य पुत्रस् तु ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यसंगरः अलर्कं प्रति राजर्षिं श्लोको गीतः पुरातनैः
Alarka, his son, was devoted to Brahman and steadfast in truth; regarding Alarka the royal sage, an ancient verse was sung.
षष्टिर् वर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिर् वर्षशतानि च युवा रूपेण संपन्नः प्राग् आसीच् च कुलोद्वहः
For sixty thousand years and sixty hundred years, he remained youthful in appearance, and was the foremost of his lineage.
लोपामुद्राप्रसादेन परमायुर् अवाप्तवान् तस्यासीत् सुमहद् राज्यं रूपयौवनशालिनः
By the grace of Lopāmudrā, he attained supreme longevity; his kingdom was vast, and he possessed beauty and youth.
शापस्यान्ते महाबाहुर् हत्वा क्षेमकराक्षसम् रम्यां निवेशयाम् आस पुरीं वाराणसीं पुनः
At the end of the curse, the mighty-armed one slew Kṣemakara the demon, and once again established the delightful city of Vārāṇasī.
संनतेर् अपि दायादः सुनीथो नाम धार्मिकः सुनीथस्य तु दायादः क्षेमो नाम महायशाः
Saṃnati also had an heir, named Sunītha, who was righteous; Sunītha's heir was Kṣema, famed for his great glory.
क्षेमस्य केतुमान् पुत्रः सुकेतुस् तस्य चात्मजः सुकेतोस् तनयश् चापि धर्मकेतुर् इति स्मृतः
Kṣema's son was Ketumān, whose own son was Suketu; Suketu's son was called Dharmaketu.
धर्मकेतोस् तु दायादः सत्यकेतुर् महारथः सत्यकेतुसुतश् चापि विभुर् नाम प्रजेश्वरः
Dharmaketu's heir was Satyaketu, a great chariot-warrior; Satyaketu's son was Vibhu, lord of people.
आनर्तस् तु विभोः पुत्रः सुकुमारश् च तत्सुतः सुकुमारस्य पुत्रस् तु धृष्टकेतुः सुधार्मिकः
Ānarta was Vibhu's son, and Sukumāra was his own son; Sukumāra's son was Dhṛṣṭaketu, who was righteous.
धृष्टकेतोस् तु दायादो वेणुहोत्रः प्रजेश्वरः वेणुहोत्रसुतश् चापि भार्गो नाम प्रजेश्वरः
Dhṛṣṭaketu's heir was Veṇuhotra, lord of people; Veṇuhotra's son was Bhārga, also lord of people.
वत्सस्य वत्सभूमिस् तु भार्गभूमिस् तु भार्गजः एते त्व् अङ्गिरसः पुत्रा जाता वंशे ऽथ भार्गव
Vatsa's land is called Vatsabhumi, and Bhargava's land is called Bhargabhumi; these are the sons of Angiras, born in the lineage, and Bhargava as well.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्यास् त्रयः पुत्राः सहस्रशः इत्य् एते काश्यपाः प्रोक्ता नहुषस्य निबोधत
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas—three kinds of sons, in thousands—these are said to be the descendants of Kashyapa; now hear of Nahusha.
उत्पन्नाः पितृकन्यायां विरजायां महौजसः नहुषस्य तु दायादाः षड् इन्द्रोपमतेजसः
From Viraja, the daughter of the ancestors, were born the mighty heirs of Nahusha—six sons, whose brilliance rivaled Indra's.
यतिर् ययातिः संयातिर् आयातिः पार्श्वको ऽभवत् यतिर् ज्येष्ठस् तु तेषां वै ययातिस् तु ततः परम्
Yati, Yayati, Samyati, Ayati, and Parshvaka were born; Yati was the eldest among them, and Yayati came after him.
