पार्थिवा देवराताश् च शालङ्कायनबाष्कलाः लोहिता यमदूताश् च तथा कारूषकाः स्मृताः
The Parthivas, Devaratas, Shalankayana, Bashkala, Lohita, Yamaduta, and Karushaka are remembered.
पौरवस्य मुनिश्रेष्ठा ब्रह्मर्षेः कौशिकस्य च संबन्धो ऽप्य् अस्य वंशे ऽस्मिन् ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्य विश्रुतः
Among the descendants of Paurava and the eminent sage Kaushika, the connection of the Brahmakshatra lineage in this family is well-known.
विश्वामित्रात्मजानां तु शुनःशेफो ऽग्रजः स्मृतः भार्गवः कौशिकत्वं हि प्राप्तः स मुनिसत्तमः
Among the sons of Visvamitra, Shunahshepha is remembered as the eldest; the illustrious Bhargava attained the status of a Kaushika sage.
विश्वामित्रस्य पुत्रस् तु शुनःशेफो ऽभवत् किल हरिदश्वस्य यज्ञे तु पशुत्वे विनियोजितः
The son of Visvamitra was Shunahshepha, indeed; in the sacrifice of Haridashva, he was appointed as the sacrificial animal.
देवैर् दत्तः शुनःशेफो विश्वामित्राय वै पुनः देवैर् दत्तः स वै यस्माद् देवरातस् ततो ऽभवत्
Given by the gods, Shunahshepha was again entrusted to Visvamitra; since he was given by the gods, he became Devarata.
देवरातादयः सप्त विश्वामित्रस्य वै सुताः दृषद्वतीसुतश् चापि वैश्वामित्रस् तथाष्टकः
Devarata and others, seven in all, are the sons of Visvamitra; also, the son of Drishadvati and Ashtaka, both are Vaisvamitra.
अष्टकस्य सुतो लौहिः प्रोक्तो जह्नुगणो मया अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि वंशम् आयोर् महात्मनः
Lauhi is said to be the son of Ashtaka, and the Jahnu clan is mentioned by me; hereafter, I will describe the lineage of the great-souled Ayo.
आयोः पुत्राश् च ते पञ्च सर्वे वीरा महारथाः स्वर्भानुतनयायां च प्रभायां जज्ञिरे नृपाः
Ayo had five sons, all heroic and great chariot-warriors; they were born to Prabha, the daughter of Svarbhanu.
नहुषः प्रथमं जज्ञे वृद्धशर्मा ततः परम् रम्भो रजिर् अनेनाश् च त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुताः
Nahuṣa was born first, then Vṛddhasharma; next came Rambha, Raji, and Anena, all renowned in the three worlds.
रजिः पुत्रशतानीह जनयाम् आस पञ्च वै राजेयम् इति विख्यातं क्षत्रम् इन्द्रभयावहम्
Raji fathered five hundred sons here; this royal lineage is famous as the Kshatra that inspires fear in Indra.
यत्र दैवासुरे युद्धे समुत्पन्ने सुदारुणे देवाश् चैवासुराश् चैव पितामहम् अथाब्रुवन्
When a fierce battle arose between the gods and the demons, both the gods and the demons spoke to the grandsire.
आवयोर् भगवन् युद्धे को विजेता भविष्यति ब्रूहि नः सर्वभूतेश श्रोतुम् इच्छाम तत्त्वतः
O Lord, who will be the victor in our battle? Tell us, O ruler of all beings, we wish to hear the truth.
येषाम् अर्थाय संग्रामे रजिर् आत्तायुधः प्रभुः योत्स्यते ते विजेष्यन्ति त्रींल् लोकान् नात्र संशयः
Those for whose sake Raji, the mighty one, enters battle with weapons in hand—they will conquer the three worlds; of this there is no doubt.
यतो रजिर् धृतिस् तत्र श्रीश् च तत्र यतो धृतिः यतो धृतिश् च श्रीश् चैव धर्मस् तत्र जयस् तथा
Where Raji is, there is steadfastness; where steadfastness is, there is fortune; where both steadfastness and fortune are, there is righteousness, and thus, victory.
ते देवा दानवाः प्रीता देवेनोक्ता रजिं तदा अभ्ययुर् जयम् इच्छन्तो वृण्वानास् तं नरर्षभम्
Then, pleased, the gods and the demons, as instructed by the god, approached Raji, the best of men, desiring victory and choosing him.
स हि स्वर्भानुदौहित्रः प्रभायां समपद्यत राजा परमतेजस्वी सोमवंशविवर्धनः
He, the grandson of Svarbhanu, was born from Prabha, a king of supreme brilliance, who increased the lunar dynasty.
ते हृष्टमनसः सर्वे रजिं वै देवदानवाः ऊचुर् अस्मज्जयाय त्वं गृहाण वरकार्मुकम्
All the gods and demons, delighted in heart, said to Raji: 'For our victory, take up the excellent bow.'
अथोवाच रजिस् तत्र तयोर् वै देवदैत्ययोः अर्थज्ञः स्वार्थम् उद्दिश्य यशः स्वं च प्रकाशयन्
Then Raji, understanding their motives and seeking his own advantage, spoke there to both the gods and the demons, making his own fame known.
यदि दैत्यगणान् सर्वाञ् जित्वा वीर्येण वासवः इन्द्रो भवामि धर्मेण ततो योत्स्यामि संयुगे
If, by my strength, I defeat all the hosts of demons, then, by righteousness, I shall become Indra; only then will I fight in battle.
देवाः प्रथमतो विप्राः प्रतीयुर् हृष्टमानसाः एवं यथेष्टं नृपते कामः संपद्यतां तव
The gods, delighted in mind, were the first to agree, saying: 'So be it, O king; may your desire be fulfilled as you wish.'
श्रुत्वा सुरगणानां तु वाक्यं राजा रजिस् तदा पप्रच्छासुरमुख्यांस् तु यथा देवान् अपृच्छत
Hearing the words of the hosts of gods, King Raji then questioned the chief among the demons, just as he had asked the gods.
दानवा दर्पसंपूर्णाः स्वार्थम् एवावगम्य ह प्रत्यूचुस् तं नृपवरं साभिमानम् इदं वचः
The demons, filled with pride and understanding only their own interest, replied to that best of kings with these words, full of arrogance.
अस्माकम् इन्द्रः प्रह्रादो यस्यार्थे विजयामहे अस्मिंस् तु समरे राजंस् तिष्ठ त्वं राजसत्तम
Prahlada is our Indra, for whose sake we seek victory; but in this battle, O best of kings, you must remain, O king.
स तथेति ब्रुवन्न् एव देवैर् अप्य् अतिचोदितः भविष्यसीन्द्रो जित्वैनं देवैर् उक्तस् तु पार्थिवः
Saying 'So be it,' and further urged by the gods, the king was told by the gods: 'Having conquered him, you shall become Indra.'
जघान दानवान् सर्वान् ये ऽवध्या वज्रपाणिनः स विप्रनष्टां देवानां परमश्रीः श्रियं वशी
He struck down all the demons, even those invulnerable to the wielder of the thunderbolt; he, possessing supreme fortune, restored the lost glory of the gods.
निहत्य दानवान् सर्वान् आजहार रजिः प्रभुः ततो रजिं महावीर्यं देवैः सह शतक्रतुः
Having slain all the demons, the mighty Raji seized the kingdom; then Indra, together with the gods, honored the great and powerful Raji.
रजिपुत्रो ऽहम् इत्य् उक्त्वा पुनर् एवाब्रवीद् वचः इन्द्रो ऽसि तात देवानां सर्वेषां नात्र संशयः
Declaring, 'I am the son of Raji,' he again spoke: 'You are Indra, dear one, of all the gods; of this there is no doubt.'
यस्याहम् इन्द्रः पुत्रस् ते ख्यातिं यास्यामि कर्मभिः स तु शक्रवचः श्रुत्वा वञ्चितस् तेन मायया
He to whom I am Indra, your son, shall become renowned through his deeds; but hearing these words of Indra, he was deceived by that illusion.
तथैवेत्य् अब्रवीद् राजा प्रीयमाणः शतक्रतुम् तस्मिंस् तु देवैः सदृशो दिवं प्राप्ते महीपतौ
The king, pleased, replied to Indra, 'So be it.' When that king ascended to heaven, he became like the gods.
दायाद्यम् इन्द्राद् आजह्रू राज्यं तत्तनया रजेः पञ्च पुत्रशतान्य् अस्य तद् वै स्थानं शतक्रतोः
Raji's sons took the kingdom as their inheritance from Indra; he had five hundred sons, and that became the domain of Indra.
