Vishnu said, 'Go home,' and Maudgalya departed; seeing prosperity in his own hermitage, the sage spoke.
Ah, this is the power of giving! Ah, the remembrance of Vishnu! Ah, the power of the Ganga! By whom can this greatness be comprehended?
Maudgalya, together with his wife, sons, grandsons, relatives, and parents, enjoyed pleasures and attained both enjoyment and liberation.
From then on, that holy place of Maudgalya became Vaishnava; bathing and giving there grant the fruits of both enjoyment and liberation.
If, in any way, there is mention of a tīrtha in the Vedas or in the Smṛtis, Viṣṇu becomes pleased with that person; he is freed from sins and becomes happy.
On both banks, there are eleven thousand tīrthas, all bestowing every desired result, through bathing, giving, recitation, and the like.
Listen, Nārada, to the account of the tīrtha called Lakṣmī-tīrtha, renowned as the direct increaser of Lakṣmī, the destroyer of misfortune, and a source of merit.
Long ago, there was a conversation between Lakṣmī and her son Daridra; both, being mutually opposed, traversed the world.
There is nothing in the three worlds untouched by the two of them. Both declared to each other, 'My seniority, my seniority!' Daridra said to Śrī with force, 'I was born first.'
It is I alone who am the family, character, and life of embodied beings; without me, even those who possess bodies, though alive, are as if dead.
Daridra said: 'I am superior to all; liberation always depends on me. Thus spoke Daridra.'
Where I am present, desire, anger, greed, pride, and envy never remain.
Where I am present, fear, madness, jealousy, and arrogant conduct never arise.
Hearing the words of Daridra, Lakṣmī replied to her.
Any being adorned by me becomes honored by all; even if a poor man is like Śiva, he is overcome by everyone.
At the utterance of the word 'body,' the five deities residing in the body—intelligence, fortune, modesty, tranquility, and fame—immediately depart.
So long as a person does not seek wealth, he possesses virtues and dignity; but if he becomes desirous of wealth, where are his virtues, where is his dignity?
So long as a being does not seek wealth, he is the best of all, the abode of all virtues, worthy of reverence by all worlds.
This is a great misfortune, a grave sin for embodied beings: no one honors, speaks to, or touches a poor person.
Therefore, I am superior; listen to my words regarding poverty.
Hearing Lakṣmī's words, Daridra spoke.
You are ashamed to say, 'I am the elder,' and you constantly delight in sins, abandoning the Supreme Person.
How is it that you, ever deceiving the trusting, boast so much? There is no happiness in attaining you, only regret, just as with a false teacher.
The intoxication that arises in men from wine is not as fierce as that which comes merely from your presence, even among the wise.
O Lakshmi, you always delight mostly among those who commit evil deeds, while I dwell ever among the worthy, those steadfast in righteousness.
I abide with those devoted to Shiva and Vishnu, with the grateful, the great, those of good conduct, the peaceful, and those intent on serving their teachers.
I always reside among the virtuous, the learned, the brave, the resolute, and the good; therefore, Lakshmi, seniority rests with me.
I dwell among Brahmins who are pure, who observe vows, among mendicants and the fearless; Lakshmi, listen to your own domain.
You abide among those attached to kings, the wicked, the cruel, the malicious, the slanderous, the greedy, the deformed, and the deceitful.
You dwell among the ignoble, the ungrateful, those who violate righteousness, betrayers of friends, the undesirable, and the broken-hearted.
