लोकत्रयैकपावन्यां गौतम्यां दण्डके वने श्रद्धया परया वत्स सुस्नातः सुसमाहितः
O child, having bathed with utmost devotion and concentration in the Gautami river, the sole purifier of the three worlds, within the Dandaka forest,
ब्रह्माणं चैव विष्णुं च माम् ईशं च यथाक्रमम् स्तुहि त्वं सर्वभावेन भृत्यौ प्रीतिम् अवाप्स्यतः
You should praise Brahma, Vishnu, myself, and Shiva in proper order, with all your heart; by doing so, you will obtain the favor of us, your masters.
तत् पितुर् वचनं श्रुत्वा यमः प्रीतमनास् तदा तयोश् च प्रीतये प्रायाद् देवतर्पणयोर् यमः
Hearing his father's words, Yama, with a joyful mind, then proceeded for the satisfaction of both, to offer oblations to the gods.
गौतम्याम् अघहारिण्यां सुसमाहितमानसः तथैव तोषयाम् आस गङ्गायां सुरसत्तमान्
With a mind firmly composed, he likewise pleased the foremost of the gods in the purifying Gautami and in the Ganga.
श्वभ्यां च सहितः श्रीमान् दक्षिणाशापतिः प्रभुः ब्रह्माणं तोषयाम् आस भानुं वै दक्षिणे तटे
Accompanied by his two dogs, the glorious lord of the southern region, Yama, pleased Brahma, the radiant one, on the southern bank.
ईशानम् उत्तरे विष्णुं स्वयं धर्मः प्रतापवान् दत्तवन्तो वरं श्रेष्ठं सरमाया विशापकम् वरान् अयाचत बहूंल् लोकानाम् उपकारकान्
On the northern bank, the powerful Dharma himself pleased Ishana and Vishnu, granting the best boon to Sarama, the remover of poison, and requested many boons beneficial to the worlds.
एषु स्नानं तु ये कुर्युर् ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः आत्मार्थं च परार्थं च ते कामान् आप्नुयुः शुभान्
Those who bathe at these places for themselves or for others, invoking Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, attain auspicious desires.
बाणतीर्थे तु ये स्नात्वा शार्ङ्गपाणिं स्मरन्ति वै तेभ्यो दारिद्र्यदुःखानि न भवेयुर् युगे युगे
Those who, having bathed at the Bana Tirtha, remember Sharngapani (Vishnu), will never experience poverty or suffering, age after age.
गोतीर्थे ब्रह्मतीर्थे वा यस् तु स्नात्वा यतव्रतः ब्रह्माणं तं नमस्याथ द्वीपस्यापि प्रदक्षिणम्
Whoever, having bathed at the Go Tirtha or Brahma Tirtha, observes vows and reverently salutes Brahma, and circumambulates the island,
यः कुर्यात् तेन पृथिवी सप्तद्वीपा वसुंधरा प्रदक्षिणीकृता तत्र किंचिद् दत्त्वा वसु द्विजम्
By doing so, he has circumambulated the earth with its seven continents; giving even a little wealth there to a Brahmin,
तद् देवयजनं प्राप्य किंचिद् धुत्वा हुताशने अश्वमेधादियज्ञानां फलं प्राप्नोति पुष्कलम्
Having reached that place of divine worship and offering even a small oblation into the sacred fire, one obtains abundant fruit equal to Ashvamedha and other great sacrifices.
यः सकृत् तत्र पठति गायत्रीं वेदमातरम् अधीतास् तेन वेदा वै निष्कामो मुक्तिभाजनम्
Whoever recites the Gayatri, mother of the Vedas, even once there, is considered to have studied the Vedas; without desire, he becomes eligible for liberation.
स्नात्वा तु दक्षिणे कूले शक्तिं देवीं तु भक्तितः पूजयित्वा यथान्यायं सर्वान् कामान् अवाप्नुयात्
After bathing on the southern bank, if one worships the goddess Shakti with devotion according to proper rites, one attains all desires.
ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानां शक्तिर् माता त्रयीमयी सर्वान् कामान् अवाप्नोति पुत्रवान् धनवान् भवेत्
The mother, who is the power of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, and composed of the three Vedas, grants all desires; one becomes blessed with children and wealth.
आदित्यं भक्तितो यस् तु दक्षिणे नियतो नरः स्नात्वा पश्येत तेनेष्टा यज्ञा विविधदक्षिणाः
Whoever, with discipline and devotion, bathes and beholds Aditya (the Sun) on the southern bank, has performed desired sacrifices with various offerings.
कूले यश् चोत्तरे चैव गङ्गाया दैत्यसूदनम् स्नात्वा पश्येत तं नत्वा तस्य विष्णोः परं पदम्
Whoever, after bathing on the northern bank of the Ganga, beholds and salutes Daityasudana (Vishnu), attains the supreme abode of Vishnu.
यमेश्वरं ततो यस् तु यमतीर्थे तु पूजितम् स्नातः पश्यति युक्तात्मा स करोत्य् अचिरेण हि
Whoever, after bathing at the Yama Tirtha, beholds Yameshvara, worshipped there, with a disciplined mind, quickly accomplishes his purpose.
पितॄणाम् अक्षयं पुण्यं फलदं कीर्तिवर्धनम् तत्र स्नानेन दानेन जपेन स्तवनेन च अपि दुष्कृतकर्माणः पितरो मोक्षम् आप्नुयुः
For the ancestors, there is inexhaustible merit, fruitfulness, and increase of fame; through bathing, giving, reciting, and praising there, even those ancestors with sinful deeds attain liberation.
इत्याद्य् अष्ट सहस्राणि तीर्थानि त्रीणि नारद तेषु स्नानं च दानं च सर्वम् अक्षयपुण्यदम्
Thus, O Nārada, there are eight thousand sacred places, three in number; bathing and giving charity at these bestow inexhaustible merit.
एतेषां स्मरणं पुण्यं नानाजन्माघनाशनम् श्रवणात् पितृभिः सार्धं पठनात् स्वकुलैः सह
To remember these is holy, destroying the sins of many births; by hearing of them with one's ancestors, or reciting them with one's family—
तेषाम् अप्य् अतिपापानि नाशं यान्ति ममाज्ञया तत्र स्नानादि यः कृत्वा किंचिद् दत्त्वा यतात्मवान्
Even their gravest sins are destroyed by my command; whoever, self-controlled, bathes there, performs rites, and gives even a little—
पितॄणां पिण्डदानादि कृत्वा नत्वा सुरान् इमान् धनं धान्यं यशो वीर्यम् आयुर् आरोग्यसंपदः
Having offered oblations for the ancestors and bowed to these gods, one obtains wealth, grain, fame, strength, long life, and abundance of health.
पुत्रान् पौत्रान् प्रियां भार्यां लब्ध्वा चान्यन् मनीषितम् अवियुक्तः प्रीतमना बन्धुभिश् चातिमानितः
He gains sons, grandsons, a beloved wife, and whatever else he desires; he remains united with his dear ones, honored greatly by his kin, his heart content.
नरकस्थान् अपि पितॄंस् तारयित्वा कुलानि च पावयित्वा प्रियैर् युक्तो ह्य् अन्ते विष्णुं शिवं स्मरेत् ततो मुक्तिपदं गच्छेद् देवानां वचनं यथा
After rescuing even ancestors dwelling in hell and purifying his lineage, joined with his loved ones, at the end he remembers Viṣṇu or Śiva, and thus attains liberation, just as the gods have declared.
यक्षिणीसंगमं नाम तीर्थं सर्वफलप्रदम् तत्र स्नानेन दानेन सर्वान् कामान् अवाप्नुयात्
There is a sacred place called Yakṣiṇīsaṃgama, bestowing all rewards; by bathing and giving charity there, one attains every desire.
यत्र यक्षेश्वरो देवो दर्शनाद् भुक्तिमुक्तिदः तत्र च स्नानमात्रेण सत्त्रयागफलं लभेत्
Where the lord of the Yakṣas, the god, grants enjoyment and liberation by his very sight; there, by merely bathing, one obtains the fruit of a great sacrificial rite.
विश्वावसोः स्वसा नाम्ना पिप्पला गुरुहासिनी ऋषीणां सत्त्रम् अगमद् गौतमीतीरवर्तिनाम्
The sister of Viśvāvasu, named Pippalā, who lived with her teacher, went to the assembly of sages dwelling on the banks of the Gautamī.
दृष्ट्वा तत्र ऋषीन् क्षामान् सा जहासातिगर्विता या गत्वाश्रावय वौषड् अस्तु श्रौषड् इति स्थिरम्
Seeing those sages emaciated, she laughed arrogantly; going there, she loudly proclaimed, 'Let it be heard! Let it be heard! Let it be firm!'
विस्वरेण ब्रुवती तां ते शेपुः स्राविणी भव ततो नद्य् अभवत् तत्र यक्षिणीति सुविश्रुता
Speaking in a discordant voice, they cursed her: 'Become one who causes flow!' Thus, she became a river there, renowned as Yakṣiṇī.
ततो विश्वावसुः पूज्य ऋषीन् देवं त्रिलोचनम् संगम्य चैव गौतम्या तां विशापाम् अथाकरोत्
Then Viśvāvasu, honoring the sages and the three-eyed god, joined with Gautamī, made her into a sacred river.
