तेषाम् आरोग्यतां चापि शचीभर्तुर् अदोषताम् अगस्त्यदत्तशापस्य विशापत्वम् अपि क्रमात्
Health for them, blamelessness for Śacī's husband, and gradual removal of Agastya's curse.
ततो ऽहम् अब्रवं वाक्यं कश्यपं विनयान्वितम् प्रजापते कश्यप त्वं वसुभिर् लोकपालकैः
Then I spoke respectfully to Kaśyapa: 'O Prajāpati Kaśyapa, you, together with the Vasus and the guardians of the world—'
इन्द्रेण सहितः शीघ्रं गौतमीं याहि मानद तत्र स्नात्वा महेशानं स्तुहि सर्वैः समन्वितः
Quickly go to the Gautamī river with Indra, O giver of honor; there, bathe and praise Maheśāna together with all.
ततः शिवप्रसादेन सर्वं श्रेयो भवेद् इति तथेत्य् उक्त्वा जगामासौ कश्यपो गौतमीं तदा
Then, by Śiva's grace, all will be well; having said 'so be it,' Kaśyapa went to the Gautamī at that time.
स्नात्वा तुष्टाव देवेशम् एभिर् एव पदक्रमैः सर्वदुःखापनोदाय द्वयम् एव प्रकीर्तितम् गौतमी वा पुण्यनदी शिवो वा करुणाकरः
Having bathed, he praised the Lord of the gods with these very verses, for the removal of all suffering. Only two are declared: the Gautamī, the sacred river, or Śiva, the ocean of compassion.
पाहि शंकर देवेश पाहि लोकनमस्कृत पाहि पावन वागीश पाहि पन्नगभूषण
Protect, O Śaṅkara, Lord of the gods; protect, O one worshipped by the worlds; protect, O pure Lord of Speech; protect, O wearer of serpents.
पाहि धर्म वृषारूढ पाहि वेदत्रयेक्षण पाहि गोधर लक्ष्मीश पाहि शर्व गजाम्बर
Protect, O Dharma, rider on the bull; protect, O seer of the three Vedas; protect, O Lord of Lakṣmī, bearer of the earth; protect, O Śarva, clad in elephant hide.
पाहि त्रिपुरहन् नाथ पाहि सोमार्धभूषण पाहि यज्ञेश सोमेश पाह्य् अभीष्टप्रदायक
Protect, O Lord, destroyer of Tripura; protect, O one adorned with the crescent moon; protect, O Lord of sacrifice, Lord of Soma; protect, O giver of desired boons.
पाहि कारुण्यनिलय पाहि मङ्गलदायक पाहि प्रभव सर्वस्य पाहि पालक वासव
Protect, O abode of compassion; protect, O giver of auspiciousness; protect, O source of all; protect, O preserver, O Indra.
पाहि भास्कर वित्तेश पाहि ब्रह्मनमस्कृत पाहि विश्वेश सिद्धेश पाहि पूर्ण नमो ऽस्तु ते
Protect, O illuminator, Lord of wealth; protect, O one worshipped by Brahmā; protect, O Lord of all, Lord of the perfected; protect, O complete one—salutations to you.
घोरसंसारकान्तारसंचारोद्विग्नचेतसाम् शरीरिणां कृपासिन्धो त्वम् एव शरणं शिव
For embodied beings whose minds are troubled by wandering in the dreadful wilderness of worldly existence, you alone, O Śiva, ocean of mercy, are the refuge.
एवं संस्तुवतस् तस्य पुरतो ऽभूद् वृषध्वजः वरेण च्छन्दयाम् आस कश्यपं तं प्रजापतिम्
As he was thus praising, the Bull-bannered One appeared before him and offered a boon to Kaśyapa, the lord of creatures.
कश्यपो ऽपि शिवं प्राह विनीतवद् इदं वचः स प्राह विस्तरेणाथ इन्द्रस्य तु विचेष्टितम्
Kaśyapa too, with humility, spoke these words to Śiva; then he described in detail Indra’s actions.
शापं नाशं च पुत्राणां परस्परम् अमित्रताम् पापप्राप्तिं तु शक्रस्य शापप्राप्तिं तथैव च ततो वृषाकपिः प्राह दितिं चागस्त्यम् एव च
The curse, the destruction of the sons, mutual enmity, the attainment of sin by Śakra, and the receiving of a curse—thus Vṛṣākapi spoke to Diti and also to Agastya.
मरुतो ये भवत्पुत्राः पञ्चाशच् चैकवर्जिताः सर्वे भवेयुः सुभगा भवेयुर् यज्ञभागिनः
May the Maruts, your sons—fifty in number, save one—all become fortunate and share in the sacrificial offerings.
इन्द्रेण सहिता नित्यं वर्तयेयुर् मुदान्विताः
May they always live joyfully together with Indra.
इन्द्रस्य तु हविर्भागो यत्र यत्र मखे भवेत् आदौ तु मरुतस् तत्र भवेयुर् नात्र संशयः
Wherever there is a share of offerings for Indra in a sacrifice, the Maruts shall be present there first—of this there is no doubt.
मरुद्भिः सहितं शक्रं न जयेयुः कदाचन जेता भवेत् सर्वदैव सुखं तिष्ठ प्रजापते
Indra, together with the Maruts, shall never be defeated; he shall always be victorious. Dwell happily, O lord of creatures.
अद्यप्रभृति ये कुर्युर् अनयाद् भ्रातृघातनम् वंशच्छेदो विपत्तिश् च नित्यं तेषां भविष्यति
From this day onward, whoever commits fratricide in this way, for them there shall always be the destruction of their lineage and ruin.
अगस्त्यम् ऋषिशार्दूलं शंभुर् अप्य् आह यत्नतः
Śaṃbhu also carefully addressed Agastya, the tiger among sages.
न कुर्यास् त्वं च कोपं च शचीभर्तरि वै मुने शमं व्रज महाप्राज्ञ मरुतस् त्व् अमरा भवन्
You too, O sage, should not harbor anger against the husband of Śacī. Be at peace, O greatly wise one; the Maruts have become immortals.
दितिं चापि शिवः प्राह प्रसन्नो वृषभध्वजः
Śiva, the Bull-bannered One, also spoke graciously to Diti.
एको भूयान् मम सुतस् त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यमण्डितः इत्य् एवं चिन्तयन्ती त्वं तपसे नियताभवः
Thinking, 'May I have a single, great son, adorned with the sovereignty of the three worlds,' you undertook austerity with firm resolve.
तद् एतत् सफलं ते ऽद्य पुत्रा बहुगुणाः शुभाः अभवन् बलिनः शूरास् तस्माज् जहि मनोरुजम् अन्यान् अपि वरान् सुभ्रूर् याचस्व गतसंभ्रमा
Today, your effort has borne fruit—your sons have become virtuous, strong, and heroic. Therefore, cast off your sorrow, and without hesitation, ask for other boons as well, O beautiful-browed one.
तद् एतद् वचनं श्रुत्वा देवदेवस्य सा दितिः कृताञ्जलिपुटा नत्वा शंभुं वाक्यम् अथाब्रवीत्
Hearing these words of the Lord of gods, Diti, with hands joined in reverence, bowed to Śambhu and then spoke.
लोके यद् एतत् परमं यत् पित्रोः पुत्रदर्शनम् विशेषेण तु तन् मातुः प्रियं स्यात् सुरपूजित
In this world, the highest joy is for parents to see their child; but especially, O honored by the gods, it is most dear to the mother.
तत्रापि रूपसंपत्तिशौर्यविक्रमवान् भवेत् एको ऽपि तनयः किंतु बहवश् चेत् किम् उच्यते
And if that child possesses beauty, strength, and valor—even a single son is enough; what need is there to speak of having many?
मत्पुत्रास् ते प्रभावाच् च जेतारो बलिनो ध्रुवम् इन्द्रस्य भ्रातरः सत्यं पुत्राश् चैव प्रजापतेः
By your power, my sons will certainly be mighty conquerors, brothers of Indra, and truly sons of Prajāpati.
अगस्त्यस्य प्रसादाच् च गङ्गायाश् च प्रसादतः यत्र देव प्रसादस् ते तच् छुभं को ऽत्र संशयः
By the grace of Agastya and the favor of Gaṅgā, O god, where your blessing is present, what doubt can there be of auspiciousness?
कृतार्थाहं तथापि त्वां भक्त्या विज्ञापयाम्य् अहम् शृणुष्व देव वचनं कुरुष्व च जगद्धितम्
Though my wish is fulfilled, still, out of devotion, I make this request to you. Listen, O god, to my words and do what is good for the world.
