ततश् चीर्णे व्रते तस्यां दित्यां गर्भम् अधारयत् पुनः कान्ताम् अथोवाच कश्यपस् तां दितिं रहः
Then, when the vow was completed, Kaśyapa placed the embryo in Diti. Again, in private, Kaśyapa spoke to his beloved Diti.
न प्राप्नुवन्ति यत्कामान् मुनयो ऽपि तपस्स्थिताः यथाविहितकर्माङ्गअवज्ञया तच् छुचिस्मिते
Even sages devoted to austerity do not obtain their desires, O fair-smiling one, when prescribed duties are neglected with disregard.
निन्दितं च न कर्तव्यं संध्ययोर् उभयोर् अपि न स्वप्तव्यं न गन्तव्यं मुक्तकेशी च नो भव
One must not perform censured acts at either of the twilights; one must neither sleep nor go out, and one must not let the hair be unbound.
भोक्तव्यं सुभगे नैव क्षुतं वा जृम्भणं तथा संध्याकाले न कर्तव्यं भूतसंघसमाकुले
O fortunate one, one must not eat, yawn, or stretch at twilight, especially when spirits and beings are gathered.
सान्तर्धानं सदा कार्यं हसितं तु विशेषतः गृहान्तदेशे संध्यासु न स्थातव्यं कदाचन
Concealment should always be practiced, especially laughter; one must never remain inside the house during the twilights.
मुशलोलूखलादीनि शूर्पपीठपिधानकम् नैवातिक्रमणीयानि दिवा रात्रौ सदा प्रिये
Mortar, pestle, winnowing basket, seat, and coverings must never be crossed over, either by day or night, dear one.
उदक्शीर्षं तु शयनं न संध्यासु विशेषतः वक्तव्यं नानृतं किंचिन् नान्यगेहाटनं तथा
One must not sleep with the head to the north, especially at twilight; one must not speak falsehood, nor wander to another's house.
कान्ताद् अन्यो न वीक्ष्यस् तु प्रयत्नेन नरः क्वचित् इत्यादिनियमैर् युक्ता यदि त्वम् अनुवर्तसे ततस् ते भविता पुत्रस् त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यभाजनम्
A man must never look at another woman besides his own, with great care; if you follow such rules, then you shall have a son who will be the vessel of sovereignty over the three worlds.
तथेति प्रतिजज्ञे सा भर्तारं लोकपूजितम् गतश् च कश्यपो ब्रह्मन्न् इतश् चेतः सुरान् प्रति
She agreed, saying 'So be it,' to her husband, honored by the world; and Kaśyapa, O Brahman, departed from there, his mind directed toward the gods.
दितेर् गर्भो ऽपि ववृधे बलवान् पुण्यसंभवः एतत् सर्वं मयो दैत्यो मायया वेत्ति तत्त्वतः
The embryo of Diti grew, powerful and born of merit; all this, the demon Maya knows truly by his magic.
इन्द्रस्य सख्यम् अभवन् मयेन प्रीतिपूर्वकम् मयो गत्वा रहः प्राह इन्द्रं स विनयान्वितः
A friendship arose between Indra and Maya, with affection; Maya, having gone in secret, spoke to Indra with humility.
दितेर् दनोर् अभिप्रायं व्रतं गर्भस्य वर्धनम् तस्य वीर्यं च विविधं प्रीत्येन्द्राय न्यवेदयत्
He revealed to Indra Diti's intention, her vow, the growth of the embryo, and its various powers, all with goodwill.
विश्वासैकगृहं मित्रम् अपायत्रासवर्जितम् अर्जितं सुकृतं नानाविधं चेत् तद् अवाप्यते
A friend who is a single abode of trust, free from fear of harm, gained through good deeds of many kinds, is indeed attained.
नमुचेश् च प्रियो भ्राता मयो दैत्यो महाबलः भ्रातृहन्त्रा कथं मैत्र्यं मयस्यासीत् सुरेश्वर
Maya, the mighty demon, was the beloved brother of Namuci; O lord of gods, how could there be friendship for Maya with the slayer of his brother?
दैत्यानाम् अधिपश् चासीद् बलवान् नमुचिः पुरा इन्द्रेण वैरम् अभवद् भीषणं लोमहर्षणम्
Namuci, once the powerful lord of the demons, had a terrible, hair-raising enmity with Indra.
युद्धं हित्वा कदाचिद् भो गच्छन्तं तु शतक्रतुम् दृष्ट्वा दैत्यपतिः शूरो नमुचिः पृष्ठतो ऽन्वगात्
Once, after ceasing battle, the valiant demon lord Namuci followed Indra, the hundred-slain, from behind as he was departing.
तम् आयान्तम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य शचीभर्ता भयातुरः ऐरावतं गजं त्यक्त्वा इन्द्रः फेनम् अथाविशत्
Seeing him approaching, Indra, husband of Śacī, terrified, abandoned Airāvata the elephant and entered into foam.
स वज्रपाणिस् तरसा फेनेनैवाहनद् रिपुम् नमुचिर् नाशम् अगमत् तस्य भ्राता मयो ऽनुजः
Wielding the thunderbolt, he struck his enemy swiftly with foam alone; Namuci met his destruction, and his brother Maya was the younger.
भ्रातृहन्तृविनाशाय तपस् तेपे मयो महत् मायां च विविधाम् आप देवानाम् अतिभीषणाम्
To destroy his brother's killer, Maya performed great austerity and obtained various terrifying magical powers over the gods.
वरांश् चावाप्य तपसा विष्णोर् लोकपरायणात् दानशौण्डः प्रियालापी तदाभवद् असौ मयः
Having obtained boons through austerity from Viṣṇu, the refuge of the worlds, Maya became skilled in giving and pleasing speech.
अग्नींश् च ब्राह्मणान् पूज्य जेतुम् इन्द्रं कृतक्षणः दातारं च तदार्थिभ्यः स्तूयमानं च बन्दिभिः
Honoring fire and Brahmins, Indra, prepared for battle, gave gifts to those who sought them, praised by bards.
विदित्वा मघवा वायोर् मयं मायाविनं रिपुम् उपक्रान्तं सुयुद्धाय विप्रो भूत्वा तम् अभ्यगात् शचीभर्ता मयं दैत्यं प्रोवाचेदं पुनः पुनः
Knowing that Maya, the magician and enemy, had approached for a good fight, Maghavan became a Brahmin and went to him; Śacī's husband repeatedly addressed Maya, the Daitya.
देहि दैत्यपते मह्यम् अर्थिने ऽपेक्षितं वरम् त्वां श्रुत्वा दातृतिलकम् आगतो ऽहं द्विजोत्तमः
O lord of Daityas, grant me the boon I desire, for I have come to you, hearing of your generosity, as a foremost Brahmin seeking a favor.
मयो ऽपि ब्राह्मणं मत्वा ऽवदद् दत्तं मया तव विचारयन्ति कृतिनो बह्व् अल्पं वा पुरो ऽर्थिनि
Maya, thinking him a Brahmin, replied: 'I have given you what you ask. The wise consider whether to give much or little to a supplicant.'
इत्य् उक्ते तु हरिः प्राह सख्यम् इच्छे ह्य् अहं त्वया इन्द्रं मयः पुनः प्राह किम् अनेन द्विजोत्तम
When this was said, Hari spoke: 'I desire friendship with you.' Maya again replied: 'What use is this, O best of Brahmins?'
न त्वया मम वैरं भोः स्वस्तीत्य् आह हरिर् मयम् तत्त्वं वदेति स हरिर् दैत्येनोक्तः स्वकं वपुः
'You have no enmity with me, friend,' said Hari to Maya. 'Speak the truth,' said Hari, and the Daitya revealed his own form.
दर्शयाम् आस दैत्याय सहस्राक्षं यद् उच्यते ततः सविस्मयो दैत्यो मयो हरिम् उवाच ह
He showed the Daitya the form called Sahasrākṣa. Then, amazed, Maya addressed Hari.
किम् इदं वज्रपाणिस् त्वं तवायोग्या कृतिः सखे
'What is this? You are Vajrapāṇi! This act is unworthy of you, friend.'
परिष्वज्य विहस्याथ वृत्तम् इत्य् अब्रवीद् धरिः केनापि साधयन्त्य् अत्र पण्डिताश् च समीहितम्
Embracing him and laughing, Hari said: 'It is done. Here, the wise accomplish their aim by some means.'
ततः प्रभृति शक्रस्य मयेन महती ह्य् अभूत् सुप्रीतिर् मुनिशार्दूल मयो हरिहितः सदा
From then on, O tiger among sages, great affection arose between Śakra and Maya; Maya was always devoted to Hari.
