श्रूयते सर्वशास्त्रेषु यद् राम शृणु यत्नतः यदन्नः पुरुषो राजंस् तदन्नास् तस्य देवताः
It is heard in all scriptures, O Rama, listen carefully: whatever food a person eats, O king, the deities of his ancestors eat that same food.
पिण्डे निपतिते भूमौ नापश्यत् पितरं तदा शवं च पतितं यत्र शवतीर्थम् अनुत्तमम्
When the ball of food fell to the ground, he did not see his father, nor the corpse where the supreme funeral site was.
महापातकसंघातविघातकृद् अनुस्मृतिः तत्रागच्छंल् लोकपाला रुद्रादित्यास् तथाश्विनौ
Remembrance that destroys the mass of great sins occurred there; the guardians of the worlds, Rudras, Adityas, and the Ashvins, arrived.
स्वं स्वं विमानम् आरूढास् तेषां मध्ये ऽतिदीप्तिमान् विमानवरम् आरूढः स्तूयमानश् च किंनरैः
Each mounted their own celestial vehicle; among them, one exceedingly radiant, mounted the best vehicle, praised by the Kinnaras.
आदित्यसदृशाकारस् तेषां मध्ये बभौ पिता तम् अदृष्ट्वा स्वपितरं देवान् दृष्ट्वा विमानिनः
His father shone among them, resembling the sun; not seeing his own father, but seeing the gods in their vehicles.
कृताञ्जलिपुटो रामः पिता मे क्वेत्य् अभाषत इति दिव्याभवद् वाणी रामं संबोध्य सीतया
Rama, with hands joined in reverence, spoke: 'Where is my father?' Then a divine voice addressed Rama through Sita.
तिसृभिर् ब्रह्महत्याभिर् मुक्तो दशरथो नृपः वृतं पश्य सुरैस् तात देवा अप्य् ऊचिरे च तम्
Freed from three Brahmin-murders, King Dasharatha is surrounded by the gods. 'See, son,' the gods also spoke to him.
धन्यो ऽसि कृतकृत्यो ऽसि राम स्वर्गं गतः पिता नानानिरयसंघातात् पूर्वजान् उद्धरेत् तु यः
You are blessed, accomplished, Rama; your father has gone to heaven. Whoever lifts his ancestors from the multitude of various hells is praised.
स धन्यो ऽलंकृतं तेन कृतिना भुवनत्रयम् एनं पश्य महाबाहो मुक्तपापं रविप्रभम्
He is blessed, adorned by that meritorious act, O mighty-armed one; see him, shining like the sun, freed from sin, in all three worlds.
सर्वसंपत्तियुक्तो ऽपि पापी दग्धद्रुमोपमः निष्किंचनो ऽपि सुकृती दृश्यते चन्द्रमौलिवत्
Even if endowed with all wealth, a sinner is like a burnt tree; but even without possessions, a virtuous man is seen as radiant as the moon-crested one.
दृष्ट्वाब्रवीत् सुतं राजा आशीर्भिर् अभिनन्द्य च
Seeing this, the king spoke to his son, blessing him and greeting him with good wishes.
कृतकृत्यो ऽसि भद्रं ते तारितो ऽहं त्वयानघ धन्यः स पुत्रो लोके ऽस्मिन् पितॄणां यस् तु तारकः
You have accomplished your duty; may good fortune be yours. By you, O sinless one, I have been delivered. In this world, that son is blessed who delivers his fathers.
ततः सुरगणाः प्रोचुर् देवानां कार्यसिद्धये रामं च पुरुषश्रेष्ठं गच्छ तात यथासुखम् ततस् तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रामस् तान् अब्रवीत् सुरान्
Then the hosts of gods spoke for the fulfillment of the gods’ purpose: 'O best of men, Rama, go as you wish.' Hearing those words, Rama spoke to the gods.
गुरौ पितरि मे देवाः किं कृत्यम् अवशिष्यते
'O gods, with my guru and father, what duty remains to be done?'
नदी न गङ्गया तुल्या न त्वया सदृशः सुतः न शिवेन समो देवो न तारेण समो मनुः
No river is equal to the Ganga; no son is like you; no god equals Shiva; no man equals the deliverer.
त्वया राम गुरूणां च कार्यं सर्वम् अनुष्ठितम् तारिताः पितरो राम त्वया पुत्रेण मानद गच्छन्तु सर्वे स्वस्थानं त्वं च गच्छ यथासुखम्
By you, Rama, all duties to the elders have been fulfilled; by you, O honor-giver, the ancestors have been delivered by their son. Let all return to their own places, and you too, go as you wish.
तद् देववचनाद् धृष्टः सीतया लक्ष्मणाग्रजः तद् दृष्ट्वा गङ्गामाहात्म्यं विस्मितो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Then, emboldened by the words of the gods, Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana, together with Sita, saw the greatness of the Ganga and, astonished, spoke these words.
अहो गङ्गाप्रभावो ऽयं त्रैलोक्ये नोपमीयते वयं धन्या यतो गङ्गा दृष्टास्माभिस् त्रिपावनी
Ah, such is the power of the Ganga—there is nothing like it in the three worlds. We are blessed, for we have seen the Ganga, the purifier of the three worlds.
हर्षेण महता युक्तो देवं स्थाप्य महेश्वरम् तं षोडशभिर् ईशानम् उपचारैः प्रयत्नतः
Filled with great joy, he installed the god Maheshvara, worshipping that Lord with sixteen offerings, with utmost devotion.
संपूज्यावरणैर् युक्तं षट्त्रिंशत्कलम् ईश्वरम् कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा रामस् तुष्टाव शंकरम्
Having worshipped the Lord, adorned with coverings and possessing thirty-six energies, Rama, with joined palms, praised Shankara.
नमामि शंभुं पुरुषं पुराणं नमामि सर्वज्ञम् अपारभावम् नमामि रुद्रं प्रभुम् अक्षयं तं नमामि शर्वं शिरसा नमामि
I bow to Shambhu, the ancient person; I bow to the all-knowing, boundless one. I bow to Rudra, the imperishable Lord; I bow with my head to Sharva.
नमामि देवं परम् अव्ययं तम् उमापतिं लोकगुरुं नमामि नमामि दारिद्र्यविदारणं तं नमामि रोगापहरं नमामि
I bow to the supreme, imperishable god, to the Lord of Uma, the teacher of the worlds. I bow to the destroyer of poverty, I bow to the remover of disease.
नमामि कल्याणम् अचिन्त्यरूपं नमामि विश्वोद्भवबीजरूपम् नमामि विश्वस्थितिकारणं तं नमामि संहारकरं नमामि
I bow to the auspicious one of inconceivable form; I bow to the source-seed of the universe. I bow to the cause of the world's existence; I bow to the one who brings about dissolution.
नमामि गौरीप्रियम् अव्ययं तं नमामि नित्यं क्षरम् अक्षरं तम् नमामि चिद्रूपम् अमेयभावं त्रिलोचनं तं शिरसा नमामि
I bow to the beloved of Gauri, the imperishable one; I bow always to the eternal, perishable and imperishable one. I bow to the embodiment of consciousness, of immeasurable nature, the three-eyed one, with my head I bow.
नमामि कारुण्यकरं भवस्य भयंकरं वापि सदा नमामि नमामि दातारम् अभीप्सितानां नमामि सोमेशम् उमेशम् आदौ
I bow to the compassionate one, who is also the bringer of fear to existence; I always bow. I bow to the giver of desired things; I bow to Soma's lord, to Uma's lord from the beginning.
नमामि वेदत्रयलोचनं तं नमामि मूर्तित्रयवर्जितं तम् नमामि पुण्यं सदसद्व्यतीतं नमामि तं पापहरं नमामि
I bow to the one who is the eye of the three Vedas; I bow to the one beyond the three forms. I bow to the holy one, beyond existence and non-existence; I bow to the remover of sin.
नमामि विश्वस्य हिते रतं तं नमामि रूपाणि बहूनि धत्ते यो विश्वगोप्ता सदसत्प्रणेता नमामि तं विश्वपतिं नमामि
I bow to Him who delights in the welfare of the universe; I bow to Him who assumes many forms, the protector of all, the originator of existence and non-existence; I bow to that Lord of the universe, I bow to Him.
यज्ञेश्वरं संप्रति हव्यकव्यं तथा गतिं लोकसदाशिवो यः आराधितो यश् च ददाति सर्वं नमामि दानप्रियम् इष्टदेवम्
I bow to the Lord of sacrifice, who is both the recipient of offerings to gods and ancestors, who is the path, who is the ever-auspicious Shiva of the worlds, who is worshipped and who grants all; I bow to the giver, beloved of gifts, the cherished deity.
नमामि सोमेश्वरम् अस्वतन्त्रम् उमापतिं तं विजयं नमामि नमामि विघ्नेश्वरनन्दिनाथं पुत्रप्रियं तं शिरसा नमामि
I bow to the Lord of Soma, who is not independent, to the victorious consort of Uma I bow; I bow with my head to the Lord of obstacles, Nandinatha, beloved of his son.
नमामि देवं भवदुःखशोक विनाशनं चन्द्रधरं नमामि नमामि गङ्गाधरम् ईशम् ईड्यम् उमाधवं देववरं नमामि
I bow to the God who destroys the suffering and sorrow of existence, I bow to Him who bears the moon; I bow to the Lord who holds the Ganga, the praiseworthy Lord, the consort of Uma, the best of gods, I bow.
