कार्यस्य न भवेत् सिद्ध्यै तस्माद् अव्याकुलाय च असंपूर्णे स्वधर्मे हि किम् अनिष्टं न जायते
The work does not succeed, and therefore one should not be agitated; for when one's own duty is incomplete, what misfortune does not arise?
ताभ्यां यत् पूर्ववृत्तान्तं तद् अप्य् उक्तं मयानघ आयुषस् तु सुतः श्रीमान् धन्वन्तरिर् उदारधीः
To those two, I also recounted the previous story: that the illustrious Dhanvantari, son of Āyuṣ, was noble-minded.
तमसा च कृतं विघ्नं विष्णुना तच् च नाशितम् पूर्वजन्मसु वृत्तान्तम् इत्यादि परिकीर्तितम्
An obstacle was created by darkness and destroyed by Viṣṇu; the events of previous births and so on were described.
तच् छ्रुत्वा विस्मितौ चोभौ माम् एव पुनर् ऊचतुः
Hearing this, both were amazed and again addressed me.
तद्दोषप्रतिबन्धस् तु केन स्यात् सुरसत्तम
By what means, O best of gods, can the obstacle caused by that fault be removed?
पुनर् ध्यात्वा ताव् अवदं श्रूयतां दोषकारकम् कारणं सर्वसिद्धीनां दुःखसंसारतारणम्
After meditating again, I said to them: 'Listen to the cause of the fault, the reason for all accomplishments, and the means to cross the ocean of suffering.'
शरणं तप्तचित्तानां निर्वाणं जीवताम् अपि गत्वा तु गौतमीं देवीं स्तूयेतां हरिशंकरौ
It is the refuge for those whose hearts are afflicted, the liberation even for the living; having gone to the goddess Gautamī, let them praise Hari and Śaṅkara.
नोपायो ऽन्यो ऽस्ति संशुद्ध्यै तौ तां हित्वा जगत्त्रये तदैव जग्मतुर् उभौ गौतमीं मुनिसत्तम स्नातौ कृतक्षणौ चोभौ देवौ तुष्टुवतुर् मुदा
There is no other means for purification; leaving everything, those two immediately went to Gautamī, O best of sages. Having bathed at the proper time, both gods joyfully praised her.
नमो मत्स्याय कूर्माय वराहाय नमो नमः नरसिंहाय देवाय वामनाय नमो नमः
Salutations to Matsya, to Kūrma, to Varāha—salutations again and again! To Nṛsiṃha, the god, to Vāmana—salutations again and again!
नमो ऽस्तु हयरूपाय त्रिविक्रम नमो ऽस्तु ते नमो ऽस्तु बुद्धरूपाय रामरूपाय कल्किने
Salutations to you, O Hayagrīva, O Trivikrama, salutations to you! Salutations to you in the form of Buddha, in the form of Rāma, and as Kalkin.
अनन्तायाच्युतायेश जामदग्न्याय ते नमः वरुणेन्द्रस्वरूपाय यमरूपाय ते नमः
Salutations to you, the endless, the infallible Lord, to Jāmadagnya; to you in the forms of Varuṇa, Indra, and Yama—salutations to you!
परमेशाय देवाय नमस् त्रैलोक्यरूपिणे बिभ्रत्सरस्वतीं वक्त्रे सर्वज्ञो ऽसि नमो ऽस्तु ते
Salutations to the supreme Lord, the god who takes the form of the three worlds, who bears Sarasvatī on his lips; you are all-knowing—salutations to you!
लक्ष्मीवान् अस्य् अतो लक्ष्मीं बिभ्रद् वक्षसि चानघ बहुबाहूरुपादस् त्वं बहुकर्णाक्षिशीर्षकः त्वाम् एव सुखिनं प्राप्य बहवः सुखिनो ऽभवन्
O sinless one, you are endowed with fortune, bearing Lakshmi upon your chest. You possess many arms, thighs, feet, ears, eyes, and heads. Many, having attained you who are blissful, themselves became happy.
तावन् निःश्रीकता पुंसां मालिन्यं दैन्यम् एव वा यावन् न यान्ति शरणं हरे त्वां करुणार्णवम्
As long as people do not take refuge in you, O Hari, ocean of compassion, so long do they remain deprived of fortune, afflicted by impurity or misery.
सूक्ष्मं परं जोतिर् अनन्तरूपम् ओंकारमात्रं प्रकृतेः परं यत् चिद्रूपम् आनन्दमयं समस्तम् एवं वदन्तीश मुमुक्षवस् त्वाम्
Those desiring liberation declare you to be the subtle, supreme, infinite light, the essence of Om, transcending nature, of the form of consciousness, entirely composed of bliss.
आराधयन्त्य् अत्र भवन्तम् ईशं महामखैः पञ्चभिर् अप्य् अकामाः संसारसिन्धोः परम् आप्तकामा विशन्ति दिव्यं भुवनं वपुस् ते
Here, even those without desire worship you, O Lord, with great sacrifices of five kinds; having fulfilled all desires, they cross the ocean of worldly existence and enter your divine realm.
सर्वेषु सत्त्वेषु समत्वबुद्ध्या संवीक्ष्य षट्सूर्मिषु शान्तभावाः ज्ञानेन ते कर्मफलानि हित्वा ध्यानेन ते त्वां प्रविशन्ति शंभो
With an attitude of equality toward all beings, perceiving the six waves, and possessing a peaceful disposition, they abandon the fruits of actions through knowledge, and through meditation, O Shambhu, they enter into you.
न जातिधर्माणि न वेदशास्त्रं न ध्यानयोगो न समाधिधर्मः रुद्रं शिवं शंकरं शान्तिचित्तं भक्त्या देवं सोमम् अहं नमस्ये
Neither caste nor duties, nor Vedic scriptures, nor meditation or samadhi—none of these; I bow with devotion to Rudra, Shiva, Shankara, the peaceful-minded god Soma.
मूर्खो ऽपि शंभो तव पादभक्त्या समाप्नुयान् मुक्तिमयीं तनुं ते ज्ञानेषु यज्ञेषु तपःसु चैव ध्यानेषु होमेषु महाफलेषु
Even a fool, O Shambhu, by devotion to your feet, may attain your form of liberation; in knowledge, in sacrifices, in austerities, in meditation, in offerings, and in great fruits.
संपन्नम् एतत् फलम् उत्तमं यत् सोमेश्वरे भक्तिर् अहर्निशं यत् सर्वस्य जीवस्य सदा प्रियस्य फलस्य दृष्टस्य तथा श्रुतस्य
This supreme fruit is accomplished: devotion to Soma-īśvara day and night, which is always dear to every living being, the fruit seen and heard.
स्वर्गस्य मोक्षस्य जगन्निवास सोपानपङ्क्तिस् तव भक्तिर् एषा त्वत्पादसंप्राप्तिफलाप्तये तु सोपानपङ्क्तिं न वदन्ति धीराः
This devotion to you is the ladder to heaven and liberation, O abode of the universe, for attaining the fruit of reaching your feet; but the wise do not call it a mere ladder.
तस्माद् दयालो मम भक्तिर् अस्तु नैवास्त्य् उपायस् तव रूपसेवा आत्मीयम् आलोक्य महत्त्वम् ईश पापेषु चास्मासु कुरु प्रसादम्
Therefore, O compassionate one, may I have devotion to you. There is truly no means of serving your form. Seeing your own greatness, O Lord, show favor even to us sinners.
स्थूलं च सूक्ष्मं त्वम् अनादि नित्यं पिता च माता यद् असच् च सच् च एवं स्तुतो यः श्रुतिभिः पुराणैर् नमामि सोमेश्वरम् ईशितारम्
You are both gross and subtle, beginningless and eternal, father and mother, both the unreal and the real. Thus praised by the Vedas and Puranas, I bow to Soma-īśvara, the Lord.
ततः प्रीतौ हरिहराव् ऊचतुस् त्रिदशेश्वरौ
Then, pleased, Hari and Hara, the two lords of the gods, spoke.
व्रियतां यन् मनोभीष्टं यद् वरं चातिदुर्लभम्
Ask for whatever is desired in your heart, any boon, even the most difficult to obtain.
इन्द्रः प्राह सुरेशानं मद्राज्यं तु पुनः पुनः जायते भ्रश्यते चैव तत् पापम् उपशाम्यताम्
Indra said to the Lord of the gods: My kingdom is repeatedly gained and lost; may that misfortune come to an end.
यथा स्थिरो ऽहं राज्ये स्यां सर्वं स्यान् निश्चलं मम सुप्रीतौ यदि देवेशौ सर्वं स्यान् निश्चलं सदा
May I be firm in my kingdom, may everything of mine be unshakable. If you, O Lords of the gods, are truly pleased, may everything always remain steady.
तथेति हरिवाक्यं ताव् अभिनन्द्येदम् ऊचतुः परं प्रसादम् आपन्नौ ताव् आलोक्य स्मिताननौ
So be it—thus, approving Hari's words, the two joyfully spoke this. Seeing them, their faces smiling, the two attained supreme grace.
निरपायनिराधारनिर्विकारस्वरूपिणौ शरण्यौ सर्वलोकानां भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदाव् उभौ
The two, whose nature is without decline, without support, and without change, the refuge of all worlds, bestowers of enjoyment and liberation.
त्रिदैवत्यं महातीर्थं गौतमी वाञ्छितप्रदा तस्याम् अनेन मन्त्रेण कुरुतां स्नानम् आदरात्
The threefold divinity, the great sacred place, Gautami, fulfiller of desires—there, with this mantra, let one bathe with reverence.
