Victory to you, giver of fame, who are fame itself! Victory to you, giver of form, who bear all forms! Victory to you, giver of happiness, who are the very essence of happiness! Victory to you, purifier of the pure!
Victory to you, giver of peace, who are peace itself! Victory to you, born of Shankara! Victory to you, giver of drink, who are the drink itself! Victory to you, whose form is light!
Victory to you, Vamana, Lord of wealth! Victory to you, bearer of the smoky banner! Victory to you, who are the giver to all the world—obeisance to your form as the giver!
You alone are the soul that moves through the three worlds, skilled in destroying the afflictions of beings, O lotus-eyed Lord, ocean of compassion! Place your hand upon my head, O Vishnu!
As he was thus praising, the Blessed Lord, bearer of conch, discus, and mace, offered him a boon, granting fulfillment of all desires.
Dhanvantari, his mind pleased by the boon from the wielder of the discus, stood before Govinda, Lord of the gods, to receive the boon.
That king, bowing low, said to him: 'I desire the sovereignty of the gods.' That, O Vishnu, has been granted by you; I have attained my purpose.
Having been praised and worshipped, Vishnu thereupon disappeared. In due course, the king attained lordship over the gods.
Because of the fruition of many past actions, Indra, the thousand-eyed, lost his position three times from his own place.
From Nahusha, from the slaying of Vritra, from the killing of Sindhusena, and from his union with Ahalya, and for various other reasons.
Remembering again and again these things, Indra, his mind troubled by anxiety and sorrow, then spoke these words to Brihaspati, Lord of speech.
'For what reason, O Lord of speech, do I lose my kingdom? From time to time, by losing my position, I suffer disgrace, which is the worst misfortune for men.'
'Who truly knows the deep course of actions and the path of living beings? No one else is able to know the secret of all beings.'
Brihaspati said to Hari: 'Go, ask Brahma. He knows what has been, what will be, and what is happening now.'
He will speak, O wise one, by whom this has come to be; then, having arrived, those two great sages, after bowing to me with joined palms, spoke these words to me.
O Lord, by what fault does Indra, the noble-minded husband of Śacī, fall from his kingdom? Master, you should dispel our doubt.
Then I said, O Brahman, after long meditation to Bṛhaspati: 'By the fault known as incomplete duty, he has fallen from the royal position.'
Through faults of place, time, and others, by error in faith or mantra, by improper giving of gifts, or by offering impure substances—
Especially by the sin of disrespecting gods, ancestors, and deities, this incompleteness of one's own duty arises among embodied beings.
Because of this, excessive pride, suffering, and loss of position are hard to abandon; even if duty is performed, it leads to misfortune for one whose mind is disturbed.
The work does not succeed, and therefore one should not be agitated; for when one's own duty is incomplete, what misfortune does not arise?
To those two, I also recounted the previous story: that the illustrious Dhanvantari, son of Āyuṣ, was noble-minded.
An obstacle was created by darkness and destroyed by Viṣṇu; the events of previous births and so on were described.
Hearing this, both were amazed and again addressed me.
By what means, O best of gods, can the obstacle caused by that fault be removed?
After meditating again, I said to them: 'Listen to the cause of the fault, the reason for all accomplishments, and the means to cross the ocean of suffering.'
It is the refuge for those whose hearts are afflicted, the liberation even for the living; having gone to the goddess Gautamī, let them praise Hari and Śaṅkara.
There is no other means for purification; leaving everything, those two immediately went to Gautamī, O best of sages. Having bathed at the proper time, both gods joyfully praised her.
Salutations to Matsya, to Kūrma, to Varāha—salutations again and again! To Nṛsiṃha, the god, to Vāmana—salutations again and again!
Salutations to you, O Hayagrīva, O Trivikrama, salutations to you! Salutations to you in the form of Buddha, in the form of Rāma, and as Kalkin.
