तदैव पिप्पलाः प्रोचुर् वडवापि महाद्युते माता तव प्रातिथेयी वदन्त्य् एवं दिवं गता
Then the Pippalā trees spoke, and the great Vaḍavā as well: 'Your mother, who has gone to heaven, prophesied this for you.'
पराभिद्रोहनिरता विस्मृतात्महिता नराः इतस् ततो भ्रान्तचित्ताः पतन्ति नरकावटे
Men absorbed in harming others, forgetful of their own welfare, wander here and there with confused minds, and fall into the gates of hell.
तन् मातृवचनं श्रुत्वा कुपितः पिप्पलाशनः अभिमाने ज्वलत्य् अन्तः साधुवादो निरर्थकः
Hearing his mother's words, Pippalāda became angry; pride burned within him, and praise from the virtuous became meaningless.
देहि देहीति तं प्राह कृत्या नेत्रविनिर्गता वडवेति स्मरन् विप्रः कृत्यापि वडवाकृतिः
The witch, emerging from his eye, said to him, 'Give me, give me!' Remembering Vaḍavā, the sage replied, and even the witch took on the form of Vaḍavā.
सर्वसत्त्वविनाशाय प्रभूतानलगर्भिणी गभस्तिनी बालगर्भा या माता पिप्पलाशिनः
To destroy all beings, she was pregnant with intense fire; she was radiant, bearing a child, and was the mother of Pippalāda.
तद्ध्यानयोगात् तु जाता कृत्या सानलगर्भिणी उत्पन्ना सा महारौद्रा मृत्युजिह्वेव भीषणा
By meditation and yoga, the witch was born, carrying fire within; she appeared, fierce and terrifying, like Death with a protruding tongue.
अवोचत् पिप्पलादं तं किं कृत्यं मे वदस्व तत् पिप्पलादो ऽपि तां प्राह देवान् खाद रिपून् मम
She spoke to Pippalāda: 'Tell me, what should I do?' Pippalāda replied, 'Devour the gods, my enemies.'
जग्राह सा तथेत्य् उक्त्वा पिप्पलादं पुरस्थितम् स प्राह किम् इदं कृत्ये सा चाप्य् आह त्वयोदितम्
She accepted, saying 'So be it,' and seized Pippalāda standing before her. He asked, 'What is this, witch?' She replied, 'It is as you commanded.'
देवैश् च निर्मितं देहं ततो भीतः शिवं ययौ तुष्टाव देवं स मुनिः कृत्यां प्राह तदा शिवः
The gods created a body for her; frightened, Pippalāda went to Śiva, praised the god, and Śiva then addressed the witch.
योजनान्तःस्थिताञ् जीवान् न गृहाण मदाज्ञया तस्माद् याहि ततो दूरं कृत्ये कृत्यं ततः कुरु
Do not seize the living beings who dwell within a yojana, by my command. Therefore, go far away, witch, and perform your task elsewhere.
तीर्थात् तु पिप्पलात् पूर्वं यावद् योजनसंख्यया प्रातिष्ठद् वडवारूपा कृत्या सा ऋषिनिर्मिता
From the Pippalā tīrtha, before Pippalāda, as many yojanas as counted, the witch, in the form of Vaḍavā, departed, created by the sage.
तस्यां जातो महान् अग्निर् लोकसंहरणक्षमः तं दृष्ट्वा विबुधाः सर्वे त्रस्ताः शंभुम् उपागमन्
Within her arose a great fire, capable of destroying the worlds. Seeing this, all the gods were terrified and approached Śambhu.
चक्रेश्वरं पिप्पलेशं पिप्पलादेन तोषितम् स्तुवन्तो भीतमनसः शंभुम् ऊचुर् दिवौकसः
They praised Śambhu, the lord of the wheel and Pippalā, pleased by Pippalāda, and the dwellers of heaven, fearful in mind, addressed Śambhu.
रक्षस्व शंभो कृत्यास्मान् बाधते तद्भवानलः शरणं भव सर्वेश भीतानाम् अभयप्रद
Protect us, Śambhu! The witch torments us, and her fire threatens. Be our refuge, lord of all, giver of fearlessness to the frightened.
सर्वतः परिभूतानाम् आर्तानां श्रान्तचेतसाम् सर्वेषाम् एव जन्तूनां त्वम् एव शरणं शिव
For all who are insulted, distressed, and weary in mind, for every creature, you alone are the refuge, Śiva.
ऋषिणाभ्यर्थिता कृत्या त्वच्चक्षुर्वह्निनिर्गता सा जिघांसति लोकांस् त्रींस् त्वं नस् त्राता न चेतरः
The witch, requested by the sage, emerged from your eye as fire; she seeks to destroy the three worlds. You are our protector, none other.
तान् अब्रवीज् जगन्नाथो योजनान्तर्निवासिनः न बाधते त्व् असौ कृत्या तस्माद् यूयम् अहर्निशम् इहैवासध्वम् अमरास् तस्या वो न भयं भवेत्
The Lord of the universe spoke to those dwelling within a yojana: That action does not trouble you; therefore, you gods, remain here day and night. You need not fear it.
पुनर् ऊचुः सुरेशानं त्वया दत्तं त्रिविष्टपम् तत् त्यक्त्वात्र कथं नाथ वत्स्यामस् त्रिदशार्चित
Again, the lords of the gods said to the master: You have granted us heaven; how, then, revered one, shall we dwell here, abandoning that realm worshipped by the gods?
देवानां वचनं श्रुत्वा शिवो वाक्यम् अथाब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of the gods, Shiva then spoke.
देवो ऽसौ विश्वतश्चक्षुर् यो देवो विश्वतोमुखः यो रश्मिभिस् तु धमते नित्यं यो जनको मतः
That god is the all-seeing, the god whose face is everywhere, who always shines with rays, who is regarded as the creator.
स सूर्य एक एवात्र साक्षाद् रूपेण सर्वदा स्थितिं करोतु तन्मूर्तौ भविष्यन्त्य् अखिलाः स्थिताः
He alone is the sun here, always present in visible form; let him maintain his presence, and in his form all will abide.
तथेति शंभुवचनात् पारिजाततरोस् तदा देवा दिवाकरं चक्रुस् त्वष्टा भास्करम् अब्रवीत्
Thus, at Shambhu's command, the gods then made the sun from the Parijata tree; Tvashta addressed Bhaskara.
इहैवास्स्व जगत्स्वामिन् रक्षेमान् विबुधान् स्वयम् स्वांशैश् च वयम् अप्य् अत्र तिष्ठामः शंभुसंनिधौ
Remain here, Lord of the world, and protect the gods yourself. We too shall stay here with our portions, in the presence of Shambhu.
चक्रेश्वरस्य परितो यावद् योजनसंख्यया गङ्गाया उभयं तीरम् आसाद्यासन् सुरोत्तमाः
Around the Lord of the disc, as far as the count of yojanas, the best of the gods reached both banks of the Ganges and sat.
अङ्गुल्यर्धार्धमात्रं तु गङ्गातीरं समाश्रिताः तिस्रः कोट्यस् तथा पञ्च शतानि मुनिसत्तम तीर्थानां तत्र व्युष्टिं च कः शृणोति ब्रवीति वा
On the bank of the Ganges, occupying a space half the length of a finger, there were three crore and five hundred tirthas, O best of sages. Who can describe or recount their arrangement there?
ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे विनीताः शिवम् अब्रुवन्
Then all the hosts of gods, humbled, spoke to Shiva.
पिप्पलादं सुरेशान शमं नय जगन्मय
O Lord of the gods, O embodiment of the universe, bring peace to Pippalada.
ॐ इत्य् उक्त्वा जगन्नाथः पिप्पलादम् अवोचत
Uttering 'Om', the Lord of the universe addressed Pippalada.
नाशितेष्व् अपि देवेषु पिता ते नागमिष्यति दत्ताः पित्रा तव प्राणा देवानां कार्यसिद्धये
Even if the gods are destroyed, your father will not return. Your life was given by your father for the accomplishment of the gods' purpose.
दीनार्तकरुणाबन्धुः को हि तादृग्भवे भवेत् तथा याता दिवं तात तव माता पतिव्रता
Who indeed is a friend to the distressed and afflicted like that? Thus, your mother, devoted to her husband, has gone to heaven, my son.
