Rudra, enraged, swiftly destroyed the Haihayas like beasts, and attained fame among people as the foremost of the renowned.
Then the king resolved to utterly destroy the Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, Pāradas, and also the Pahnava people.
As they were being slain by the mighty Sagara, those people sought refuge with the wise Vasiṣṭha and bowed before him.
Vasiṣṭha, radiant and discerning the time, granted them safety and restrained Sagara from harming them.
But Sagara, hearing his teacher's words and mindful of his own vow, did not kill them but changed their appearances.
He shaved half the heads of the Śakas and released them; he shaved the entire heads of the Yavanas and Kāmbojas in the same way.
The Pāradas were made to wear their hair loose, the Pahnava people to keep beards, and all were deprived of Vedic study and ritual by that great soul.
Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, Pāradas, O best of Brahmins, as well as Koṇisarpas, Māhiṣakas, Darvas, Colas, and Sakeralas—
All these were Kṣatriyas, O Brahmins, but their dharma was taken away by the great king Sagara at Vasiṣṭha's command.
That king, victorious in righteousness, having conquered this earth, set the horse to roam for the Aśvamedha sacrifice, having been consecrated.
As he let the horse wander, it was seized near the southern shore of the eastern ocean and taken into the earth.
Then the king, with his sons, began to dig that land, and as they dug into the great ocean, they arrived there.
There they saw the primeval Lord, Hari, Kṛṣṇa, the progenitor, Viṣṇu in the form of Kapila, lying in deep sleep.
As he awoke, his gaze blazing forth, all the great sages were burned up, except for four who remained.
Barhiketu, Suketu, the righteous king Dharmaratha, the valiant Pañcanada—these kings became the progenitors of his line.
And to him, the blessed Lord Hari Nārāyaṇa granted an unfailing boon: an unbroken lineage for Ikṣvāku and undiminishing fame.
The Lord also granted him a son, the ocean, and everlasting residence in heaven; and the ocean, taking the offering, honored that great king.
By that act, he attained the name Sāgara; and he recovered the horse for the Aśvamedha from the ocean.
He, of great austerity, performed a hundred horse sacrifices, and it is said that he had sixty thousand sons.
How were the mighty and heroic sixty thousand sons of Sagara born, and by what means, O best of the virtuous?
Sagara had two wives, their sins burned away by austerity; the elder was Keśinī, daughter of the king of Vidarbha.
The younger was a great and supremely virtuous wife, the daughter of Ariṣṭanemi, unmatched in beauty on earth.
Aurva granted them a boon—understand this, O best of twice-born: let one of the wives receive sixty thousand sons.
Let the other choose a single son who will continue the lineage, as she desires; thus, one accepted the sixty thousand sons.
The other said, 'Let me have one son to continue the line,' and so it was; from her was born the illustrious king named Pañcajana.
The other gave birth to a gourd filled with seeds, so it is said; in it were sixty thousand embryos, each the size of a sesame seed.
In due time, they developed as they should, growing happily; the embryos were placed in jars filled with ghee.
Nurses were appointed for each one to nourish them, as many as there were embryos; after ten months, they all emerged in order.
Those sons, born in due time, increased Sagara's joy; thus, O twice-born, he had sixty thousand sons.
Born from the middle of the gourd, the sons of the lord of the earth were endowed with the energy of Nārāyaṇa, having entered those great souls.
