"Save us, save us, O wielder of the mace!"—out of fear of the Lord of spirits. Some leader of Maheshvara's hosts, one of the Pramathas, burned the entire Vaishnava sacrifice as Hari looked on.
Hari released his discus to slay the Lord of spirits, but the Lord of spirits caught the approaching discus.
When Vishnu's discus was seized, the guardians of the worlds fled in fear. Seeing them thus, Daksha praised Shankara, the god, with devotion, along with the gods, wishing for the sacrifice.
Victory to you, Shankara, Lord of Soma! Victory to you, all-knowing Shambhu! Victory to you, bearer of auspiciousness, Shambhu! Victory to you, embodiment of time—salutations!
Salutations to you, the primal creator! Salutations to you, blue-throated one! Salutations to you, beloved of Brahma! Salutations to you, embodiment of Brahma!
Salutations to you, O god of three forms, O supreme lord of three abodes! Salutations to you, of all forms, foundation of the three worlds, bestower of desires!
Salutations to you, who is known through Vedanta! Salutations to you, supreme self! Salutations to you, embodiment of sacrifice! Salutations to you, abode of sacrifice!
Salutations to you, giver of sacrifice! Salutations to you, carrier of offerings! Salutations to you, destroyer of sacrifice! Salutations to you, giver of fruits!
Save us, save us, Lord of the universe, lover of those who seek refuge! Even for the devoted and the undevoted alike, you alone are the refuge, O Lord!
As he thus praised him, Maheshvara became pleased and said, "What shall I grant you?" He replied, "Let my sacrifice be fulfilled, O Lord!"
"So be it," said the blessed god of gods, Maheshvara, Shankara, the soul of all beings, the abode of compassion and mercy.
Then, having made Daksha's sacrifice complete, O sage, the blessed one, having spoken thus, vanished along with the spirits.
As the gods departed, each returned to their own abode; then, at some time, a great conflict arose between the gods and the demons.
There, out of fear of the demons, the gods praised the Lord of Fortune, Janardana, with all their hearts and with words of devotion.
Even the chief gods, beginning with Indra, perform austerities seeking the glance of her whose heart is devoted to his feet—Lakshmi; to that one who is of the nature of Brahman, I seek refuge.
In all the three worlds, there is none superior, equal, or greater than him—whether as the rider of Garuda or as Narasimha; may that God of gods, out of compassion, protect all of us who have sought refuge from great dangers.
Then the blessed Lord, bearing the conch, discus, and mace, became pleased and said to them, 'For what purpose have you all come? I am the doer of that.'
O Madhusudana, there is intense fear of the demons among the gods; therefore, O Janardana, resolve to protect the gods.
Hari said to those who had come, 'My discus has been taken away by Hara; what can I do, as my discus is gone? You all have come in distress—let all the hosts of gods return; I will provide you protection.'
After the gods had departed, Vishnu, intent on regaining his discus, went to the Godavari and began to worship Shambhu.
With a hundred thousand divine golden lotuses, fragrant and with devotion as always, Vishnu performed worship for Umāpati.
As the worship was being performed in this way, hear this truth: when among a thousand lotuses, one could not be found.
Then the enemy of the demons plucked out his own eye and offered it as arghya; taking the vessel for arghya in his hand, along with the thousand lotuses, meditating on Shambhu, Hari, with no other refuge, offered the arghya.
O God, you alone know the inner feelings of men; you alone are the refuge and Lord—what deliberation can there be here?
Saying this, with tears in his eyes, he lay prostrate; then Ishvara, together with Bhavani, appeared before him.
Embracing him tightly, Shambhu fulfilled Hari with various boons; that very discus became as before, and his eye was restored.
Then all the hosts of gods praised Hari and Shankara, as well as Ganga, the best of rivers, and the god with the bull-banner.
From that time, that holy place has been known as Cakra-tirtha; by merely hearing its story, one is freed from all sins.
Whoever bathes, gives gifts, or offers oblations to the ancestors there, becomes free from all sins and attains heaven with the ancestors; even today, that holy place marked by the discus is seen.
The holy place called Pippala is described next after Cakra-tirtha, where the Lord of the discus regained his discus.
