पुंस्त्वम् इच्छंस् तथा मातुर् जगाम तपसे त्वरन् हिमवन्तं गिरिं नत्वा मातरं पितरं गुरुम्
Desiring manhood, and at his mother's urging, he hastened to perform austerity, bowing to the mountain Himavat, to his mother, father, and teacher.
गच्छन्तम् अन्वगात् पुत्रम् इला सोमसुतस् तथा ते सर्वे गौतमीं प्राप्ता हिमवत्पर्वतोत्तमात्
Ila, son of Soma, followed his son as he went; all of them reached Gautamī from the great mountain Himavat.
तत्र स्नात्वा तपः किंचित् कृत्वा चक्रुः स्तुतिं पराम् भवस्य देवदेवस्य स्तुतिक्रमम् इमं शृणु
There, after bathing and performing some austerity, they made supreme praise; listen to this sequence of praise to Bhava, the god of gods.
बुधस् तुष्टाव प्रथमम् इला च तदनन्तरम् ततः पुरूरवाः पुत्रो गौरीं देवीं च शंकरम्
Budha praised first, then Ila afterwards; then Pururavas, the son, praised Gauri, the goddess, and Shankara.
यौ कुङ्कुमेन स्वशरीरजेन स्वभावहेमप्रतिमौ सरूपौ याव् अर्चितौ स्कन्दगणेश्वराभ्यां तौ मे शरण्यौ शरणं भवेताम्
Those two, whose forms are like gold by nature, worshipped with saffron from their own bodies, Skanda and Ganesha—may those two, worthy of refuge, be my shelter.
संसारतापत्रयदावदग्धाः शरीरिणो यौ परिचिन्तयन्तः सद्यः परां निर्वृतिम् आप्नुवन्ति तौ शंकरौ मे शरणं भवेताम्
Those two Shankaras, whom embodied beings contemplate when burned by the threefold suffering of worldly existence, immediately attain supreme bliss—may they be my refuge.
आर्ता ह्य् अहं पीडितमानसा ते क्लेशादिगोप्ता न परो ऽस्ति कश्चित् देव त्वदीयौ चरणौ सुपुण्यौ तौ मे शरण्यौ शरणं भवेताम्
I am afflicted, my mind tormented; there is no other protector from distress, O god, than your two supremely holy feet—may those two, worthy of refuge, be my shelter.
ययोः सकाशाद् इदम् अभ्युदैति प्रयाति चान्ते लयम् एव सर्वम् जगच्छरण्यौ जगदात्मकौ तु गौरीहरौ मे शरणं भवेताम्
From whom all this arises and into whom, at the end, everything dissolves; Gauri and Hara, the refuge of the world, the essence of the universe—may they be my shelter.
यौ देववृन्देषु महोत्सवे तु पादौ गृहाणेश गिरीशपुत्र्याः प्रोक्तं धृतौ प्रीतिवशाच् छिवेन तौ मे शरण्यौ शरणं भवेताम्
Those two feet, which at the great festival among the assembly of gods were grasped by the Lord, by Shiva out of affection at the request of the Daughter of the Mountain—may those feet, worthy of refuge, be my shelter.
किम् अभीष्टं प्रदास्यामि युष्मभ्यं तद् वदन्तु मे कृतकृत्याः स्थ भद्रं वो देवानाम् अपि दुष्करम्
Tell me, what boon do you desire? I will grant it to you. You have accomplished your purpose. Blessings to you! Even for the gods, this is difficult to achieve.
इलो राजा तवाज्ञात्वा वनं प्राविशद् अम्बिके तत् क्षमस्व सुरेशानि पुंस्त्वं दातुं त्वम् अर्हसि
O Lady of the Gods, Queen of the Devas, King Ila entered the forest without your permission. Please forgive this, and you are able to restore his manhood.
तथेत्य् उवाच तान् सर्वान् भवस्य तु मते स्थिता ततः स भगवान् आह देवीवाक्यरतः सदा
She replied to them all, 'So be it,' remaining in accord with the will of Bhava. Then that blessed Lord, ever devoted to the words of the Goddess, spoke.
अत्राभिषेकमात्रेण पुंस्त्वं प्राप्नोत्व् अयं नृपः
By the act of anointing here, this king shall regain his manhood.
स्नाताया बुधभार्यायाः शरीराद् वारि सुस्रुवे नृत्यं गीतं च लावण्यं यक्षिण्या यद् उपार्जितम्
From the body of Budha’s wife, after she had bathed, water flowed forth; and the dance, song, and beauty acquired by the Yakshini.
तत् सर्वं वारिधाराभिर् गङ्गाम्भसि समाविशत् नृत्या गीता च सौभाग्या इमा नद्यो बभूविरे
All that entered into the waters of the Ganga through streams of water; and from those dances, songs, and good fortune, these rivers came into being.
ताश् चापि संगता गङ्गां ते पुण्याः संगमास् त्रयः तेषु स्नानं च दानं च सुरराज्यफलप्रदम्
And those holy rivers, having joined the Ganga, became three sacred confluences. Bathing and giving gifts there bestow the reward of the sovereignty of the gods.
इला पुंस्त्वम् अवाप्याथ गौरीशंभोः प्रसादतः महाभ्युदयसिद्ध्यर्थं वाजिमेधम् अथाकरोत्
Then Ila, having regained manhood by the grace of Gauri and Shambhu, performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice for the attainment of great prosperity.
पुरोधसं वसिष्ठं च भार्यां पुत्रांस् तथैव च अमात्यांश् च बलं कोशम् आनीय स नृपोत्तमः
That best of kings summoned the priest Vasistha, his wife, sons, ministers, army, and treasury.
चतुरङ्गं बलं राज्यं दण्डके ऽस्थापयत् तदा इलस्य नाम्ना विख्यातं तत्र तत् पुरम् उच्यते
At that time, he established a fourfold army and kingdom in Dandaka, and that city is known there by the name of Ila.
पूर्वजातान् अथो पुत्रान् सूर्यवंशक्रमागते राज्ये ऽभिषिच्य पश्चात् तम् ऐलं स्नेहाद् असिञ्चयत्
Then, having installed his sons born previously, who continued the Solar dynasty, on the throne, he later anointed that Aila out of affection.
सोमवंशकरः श्रीमान् अयं राजा भवेद् इति सर्वेभ्यो मतिमानेभ्यो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठो ऽभवन् मुने
This illustrious king, originator of the Lunar dynasty, became the eldest and best among all the wise.
यत्र च क्रतवो वृत्ता इलस्य नृपतेः शुभाः यत्र पुंस्त्वम् अवाप्याथ यत्र पुत्राः समागताः
There, O sage, the auspicious sacrifices of King Ila were performed, where he regained manhood and where his sons assembled.
यक्षिणीदत्तनृत्यादिगीतसौभाग्यमङ्गलाः नद्यो भूत्वा यत्र गङ्गां संगतास् तानि नारद
O Narada, where the rivers, endowed with the good fortune and auspiciousness of the dance and song given by the Yakshini, joined the Ganga.
तीर्थानि शुभदान्य् आसन् सहस्राण्य् अथ षोडश उभयोस् तीरयोस् तात तत्र शंभुर् इलेश्वरः तेषु स्नानं च दानं च सर्वक्रतुफलप्रदम्
There, O dear one, were sixteen thousand auspicious holy places on both banks, where Shambhu, Lord of Ila, resides. Bathing and giving gifts there bestow the fruit of all sacrifices.
चक्रतीर्थम् इति ख्यातं ब्रह्महत्यादिनाशनम् यत्र चक्रेश्वरो देवश् चक्रम् आप यतो हरिः
It is known as Cakra-tirtha, the destroyer of brahminicide and other sins, where the Lord of the Disc, the god, obtained the discus, and where Hari did so.
यत्र विष्णुः स्वयं स्थित्वा चक्रार्थं शंकरं प्रभुः पूजयाम् आस तत् तीर्थं चक्रतीर्थम् उदाहृतम्
Where Vishnu himself stood, desiring the discus, and worshipped Shankara, the Lord—there that holy place is called Cakra-tirtha.
यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते दक्षक्रतौ प्रवृत्ते तु देवानां च समागमे
By merely hearing this, one is freed from all sins; when Daksha's sacrifice commenced and the gods assembled together—
दक्षेण दूषिते देवे शिवे शर्वे महेश्वरे अनाह्वाने सुरेशस्य दक्षचित्ते मलीमसे
When Daksha, corrupted in mind, failed to invite Shiva, Sharva, the great Lord, and thus defiled the gods—
दाक्षायण्या श्रुते वाक्ये अनाह्वानस्य कारणे अहल्यायां चोक्तवत्यां कुपिताभूत् सुरेश्वरी
When Daksha's daughter heard the words explaining the reason for the lack of invitation, and when Ahalya spoke of it, the queen of the gods became enraged.
पितरं नाशये पापं क्षमेयं न कथंचन शृण्वती दोषवाक्यानि पित्रा चोक्तानि भर्तरि
I could destroy my father for this sin; I could never forgive it, having heard these words of blame spoken by my father against my husband.
