इलसैन्यं च तत्रासीत् तद् गतं च यथासुखम् उमावनस्थिता चेला गायन्ती नृत्यती पुनः
Ilā's army was there, settled comfortably; Ilā herself, dwelling in the forest of Umā, was singing and dancing again.
स्त्रीभावम् अनुचेष्टन्ती स्मरन्ती कर्मणो गतिम् कदाचित् क्रियमाणे तु इलया नृत्यकर्मणि
Acting in the manner of a woman, recalling the course of her actions, sometimes, while Ilā was performing a dance.
ताम् अपश्यद् बुधो धीमान् पितरं गन्तुम् उद्यतः इलां दृष्ट्वा गतिं त्यक्त्वा ताम् आगत्याब्रवीद् बुधः
Budha, wise, saw her as he was about to go to his father; seeing Ilā, he abandoned his path and approached her, and Budha spoke.
भार्या भव मम स्वस्था सर्वाभ्यस् त्वं प्रिया भव
Be my wife, be at ease, and be dear to all.
बुधवाक्यम् इला भक्त्या त्व् अभिनन्द्य तथाकरोत् स्मृत्वा च यक्षिणीवाक्यं ततस् तुष्टाभवन् मुने
Ilā, with devotion, welcomed Budha's words and acted accordingly; remembering the yakṣiṇī's words, she became pleased, O sage.
बुधो रेमे तया प्रीत्या नीत्वा स्वस्थानम् उत्तमम् सा चापि सर्वभावेन तोषयाम् आस तं पतिम् ततो बहुतिथे काले बुधस् तुष्टो ऽवदत् प्रियाम्
Budha enjoyed her affection, bringing her to his excellent abode; she, with all her heart, pleased her husband. After much time had passed, Budha, satisfied, spoke to his beloved.
किं ते देयं मया भद्रे प्रियं यन् मनसि स्थितम्
What shall I give you, O gentle one? Tell me what dear thing is in your mind.
तद्वाक्यसमकालं तु पुत्रं देहीत्य् अभाषत इला बुधं सोमसुतं प्रीतिमन्तं प्रियं तथा
At that very moment, Ilā spoke: 'Give me a son,' to Budha, son of Soma, loving and dear.
अमोघम् एतन् मद्वीर्यं तथा प्रीतिसमुद्भवम् पुत्रस् ते भविता तस्मात् क्षत्रियो लोकविश्रुतः
This is unfailing, arising from my strength and affection; therefore, you will have a son, renowned among the kṣatriyas.
सोमवंशकरः श्रीमान् आदित्य इव तेजसा बुद्ध्या बृहस्पतिसमः क्षमया पृथिवीसमः
He will be the maker of the Soma lineage, glorious, radiant like the sun, wise like Bṛhaspati, patient like the earth.
वीर्येणाजौ हरिर् इव कोपेन हुतभुग् यथा
In valor in battle, like Hari; in wrath, like the fire that consumes offerings.
तस्मिन्न् उत्पद्यमाने तु बुधपुत्रे महात्मनि जयशब्दश् च सर्वत्र त्व् आसीच् च सुरवेश्मनि
When that great-souled son of Budha was being born, cries of victory arose everywhere, and in the house of the gods.
बुधपुत्रे समुत्पन्ने तत्राजग्मुः सुरेश्वराः अहम् अप्य् आगमं तत्र मुदा युक्तो महामते
When the son was born to Budha, the lords of the gods assembled there; I too came there, O wise one, filled with joy.
जातमात्रः सुतो रावम् अकरोत् स पृथुस्वरम् तेन सर्वे ऽप्य् अवोचन् वै संगता ऋषयः सुराः
As soon as the son was born, he cried out with a loud voice; because of that, all the gathered sages and gods spoke.
यस्मात् पुरू रवो ऽस्येति तस्माद् एष पुरूरवाः स्याद् इत्य् एवं नाम चक्रुः सर्वे संतुष्टमानसाः
Since his cry was great, therefore he shall be called Pururavas; thus, all, with satisfied hearts, gave him this name.
बुधो ऽप्य् अध्यापयाम् आस क्षात्रविद्यां सुतं शुभाम् धनुर्वेदं सप्रयोगं बुधः प्रादात् तदात्मजे
Budha also instructed his virtuous son in the knowledge of kingship, and Budha gave his own son the Dhanurveda, along with its application.
स शीघ्रं वृद्धिम् अगमच् छुक्लपक्षे यथा शशी स मातरं दुःखयुतां समीक्ष्येलां महामतिः नमस्याथ विनीतात्मा इलाम् ऐलो ऽब्रवीद् इदम्
He quickly grew, like the moon in the waxing fortnight; seeing his mother afflicted with sorrow, that wise son, humble in heart, bowed and spoke to Ila these words.
बुधो मातर् मम पिता तव भर्ता प्रियस् तथा अहं च पुत्रः कर्मण्यः कस्मात् ते मानसो ज्वरः
"O mother, Budha is my father and your beloved husband; I am a dutiful son—why then do you have this mental anguish?"
सत्यं पुत्र बुधो भर्ता त्वं च पुत्रो गुणाकरः भर्तृपुत्रकृता चिन्ता न ममास्ति कदाचन
"Truly, son, Budha is my husband and you are a treasure of virtues; I never have any worry caused by husband or son."
तथापि पूर्वजं किंचिद् दुःखं स्मृत्वा पुनः पुनः चिन्तयेयं महाबुद्धे ततो मातरम् अब्रवीत्
"Still, remembering some former sorrow, I think of it again and again, O great-minded one." Thus she spoke to her son.
निवेदयस्व मे मातस् तद् एव प्रथमं मम
"Mother, tell me that very first thing of mine."
इला चैनम् उवाचेदं रहोवाचं कथं वदे तथापि पुत्र ते वच्मि पित्रोः पुत्रो यतो गतिः मग्नानां दुःखपाथोब्धौ पुत्रः प्रवहणं परम्
Ila said to him: "How can I speak this secret matter? Yet, my son, I will tell you. For parents sunk in the ocean of sorrow, a son is truly the supreme raft."
तन् मातृवचनं श्रुत्वा विनीतः प्राह मातरम् पादयोः पतितश् चापि वद मातर् यथा तथा
Hearing his mother's words, the humble one addressed his mother, falling at her feet: "Speak, mother, just as it is."
सा पुरूरवसं प्राह इक्ष्वाकूणां तथा कुलम् तत्रोत्पत्तिं स्वस्य नाम राज्यप्राप्तिं प्रियान् सुतान्
She told Pururavas about the lineage of the Ikshvakus, her own birth there, her name, attainment of the kingdom, and her beloved sons.
पुरोधसं वसिष्ठं च प्रियां भार्यां स्वकं पदम् वननिर्याणम् एवाथ अमात्यानां पुरोधसः
She spoke of the family priest Vasistha, her dear husband, her own position, her departure to the forest, and the ministers and the priest.
प्रेषणं च नगर्यां तां मृगयासक्तिम् एव च हिमवत्कन्दरगतिं यक्षेश्वरगृहे गतिम्
She told of being sent from the city, her fondness for hunting, her journey to the caves of the Himalayas, and her stay in the house of the lord of the Yakshas.
उमावनप्रवेशं च स्त्रीत्वप्राप्तिम् अशेषतः महेश्वराज्ञया तत्र चाप्रवेशं नरस्य तु
She spoke of entering the grove of Uma, her complete transformation into womanhood, and, by the command of Maheshvara, the prohibition of a man's entry there.
यक्षिणीवाक्यम् अप्य् अस्य वरदानं तथैव च बुधप्राप्तिं तथा प्रीतिं पुत्रोत्पत्त्याद्य् अशेषतः
She also told of the words of the Yakshini, the granting of a boon, the coming of Budha, the joy at the birth of a son, and all else in detail.
कथयाम् आस तत् सर्वं श्रुत्वा मातरम् अब्रवीत् पुरूरवाः किं करोमि किं कृत्वा सुकृतं भवेत्
She narrated all this; hearing it, Pururavas said to his mother: "What shall I do? By doing what will I attain merit?"
एतावता ते तृप्तिश् चेद् अलम् एतेन चाम्बिके यद् अप्य् अन्यन् मनोवर्ति तद् अप्य् आज्ञापयस्व मे
"If you are satisfied with this, O mother, let it be enough; but if anything else is in your mind, command me in that as well."
