भर्तृवाक्यम् अशेषेण स्मरन्ती प्राह भूमिपम्
Remembering her husband's words completely, she then spoke to the king.
हयारूढाबला तन्वि क्व एकैव तु गच्छसि पुरुषस्य च वेषेण इले कम् अनुयास्यसि
Delicate one, mounted on a horse, where are you going alone? And, dressed as a man, whom are you following, O Ila?
इलेति वचनं श्रुत्वा राजासौ क्रोधमूर्छितः यक्षिणीं भर्त्सयित्वासौ ताम् अपृच्छन् मृगीं पुनः
Hearing these words addressed to Ila, the king, overcome with anger, rebuked the yakṣiṇī and again questioned the deer.
तथापि यक्षिणी प्राह इले किम् अनुवीक्षसे इलेति वचनं श्रुत्वा धृतचापो हयस्थितः
Still, the yakṣiṇī said, 'O Ila, why do you keep looking at me?' Hearing these words, he, holding his bow, remained on horseback.
कुपितो दर्शयाम् आस त्रैलोक्यविजयी धनुः पुनः सा प्राह नृपतिं महात्मानम् इले स्वयम्
Angry, the conqueror of the three worlds displayed his bow; again, she spoke to the great-souled king Ila herself.
प्रेक्षस्व पश्चान् मां ब्रूहि असत्यां सत्यवादिनीम् तदा चालोकयद् राजा स्तनौ तुङ्गौ भुजान्तरे
'Look behind you, then speak to me, who am truthful and not false.' Then the king beheld her high breasts between her arms.
किम् इदं मम संजातम् इत्य् एवं चकितो ऽभवत्
'What is this that has happened to me?'—thus he became bewildered.
किम् इदं मम संजातं जानीते भवती स्फुटम् वद सर्वं यथातथ्यं त्वं का वा वद सुव्रते
'What is this that has happened to me? Do you know clearly? Tell me everything as it truly is. Who are you? Speak, O virtuous one.'
हिमवत्कन्दरश्रेष्ठे समन्युर् वसते पतिः यक्षाणाम् अधिपः श्रीमांस् तद्भार्याहं तु यक्षिणी
In the best cave of Himavat dwells my husband, the illustrious lord of the yakṣas; I am his wife, a yakṣiṇī.
यत्कन्दरे भवान् राजा तूपविष्टः सुशीतले यस्य यक्षा हता मोहात् त्वया हि संगरं विना
In whose cave you, O king, are seated in cool comfort, whose yakṣa was slain by you in ignorance, without battle.
ततो ऽहं निर्गमार्थं ते मृगी भूत्वा उमावनम् प्रविष्टा त्वं प्रविष्टो ऽसि पुरा प्राह महेश्वरः
Therefore, in order to leave, I became a deer and entered the Umā forest; you have entered as well. Formerly, Maheśvara declared:
यस् त्व् अत्र प्रविशेन् मन्दः पुमान् स्त्रीत्वम् अवाप्स्यति तस्मात् स्त्रीत्वम् अवाप्तो ऽसि न त्वं दुःखितुम् अर्हसि प्रौढो ऽपि को ऽत्र जानाति विचित्रभवितव्यताम्
'Whoever, out of ignorance, enters here, that man will obtain womanhood. Therefore, you have attained womanhood; you should not grieve. Even the wise cannot fathom the wondrous ways of destiny.'
यक्षिणीवचनं श्रुत्वा हयारूढस् तदापतत् तम् आश्वास्य पुनः सैव यक्षिणी वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of the yakṣiṇī, he, mounted on his horse, became distressed; comforting him, the yakṣiṇī again spoke these words:
स्त्रीत्वं जातं जातम् एव न पुंस्त्वं कर्तुम् अर्हसि गृहाण विद्यां स्त्रीयोग्यां नृत्यं गीतम् अलंकृतिम् स्त्रीलालित्यं स्त्रीविलासं स्त्रीकृत्यं सर्वम् एव तत्
Womanhood has indeed arisen; you must not attempt to regain manhood. Learn the arts suitable for women: dance, song, adornment, feminine grace, feminine play, and all the duties of women.
इला सर्वम् अथावाप्य यक्षिणीं वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
Having obtained everything, Ilā spoke to the yakṣiṇī.
को वा भर्ता किं तु कृत्यं पुनः पुंस्त्वं कथं भवेत् एतद् वदस्व कल्याणी दुःखार्ताया विशेषतः आर्तानाम् आर्तिशमनाच् छ्रेयो नाभ्यधिकं क्वचित्
Who is the husband? What should be done? How can manhood be regained? Tell me this, O auspicious one, especially to one afflicted by sorrow. Nowhere is anything better than alleviating the suffering of the distressed.
बुधः सोमसुतो नाम वनाद् अस्माच् च पूर्वतः आश्रमस् तस्य सुभगे पितरं नित्यम् एष्यति
Budha, the son of Soma, has an āśrama to the east of this forest, O fortunate one; he always visits his father.
अनेनैव पथा सोमं पितरं स बुधो ग्रहः द्रष्टुं याति ततो नित्यं नमस्कर्तुं तथैव च
By this very path, Budha goes to see his father Soma, the planet, and always goes to pay respects likewise.
यदा याति बुधः शान्तस् तदात्मानं च दर्शय तं दृष्ट्वा त्वं तु सुभगे सर्वकामान् अवाप्स्यसि
When Budha, peaceful, arrives, reveal yourself; upon seeing him, O fortunate one, you will obtain all desires.
ताम् आश्वास्य ततः सुभ्रूर् यक्षिण्य् अन्तरधीयत यक्षिणी सा तम् आचष्ट यक्षो ऽपि सुखम् आप्तवान्
Then, comforting her, the yakṣiṇī vanished; the yakṣiṇī reported this, and the yakṣa also attained happiness.
इलसैन्यं च तत्रासीत् तद् गतं च यथासुखम् उमावनस्थिता चेला गायन्ती नृत्यती पुनः
Ilā's army was there, settled comfortably; Ilā herself, dwelling in the forest of Umā, was singing and dancing again.
स्त्रीभावम् अनुचेष्टन्ती स्मरन्ती कर्मणो गतिम् कदाचित् क्रियमाणे तु इलया नृत्यकर्मणि
Acting in the manner of a woman, recalling the course of her actions, sometimes, while Ilā was performing a dance.
ताम् अपश्यद् बुधो धीमान् पितरं गन्तुम् उद्यतः इलां दृष्ट्वा गतिं त्यक्त्वा ताम् आगत्याब्रवीद् बुधः
Budha, wise, saw her as he was about to go to his father; seeing Ilā, he abandoned his path and approached her, and Budha spoke.
भार्या भव मम स्वस्था सर्वाभ्यस् त्वं प्रिया भव
Be my wife, be at ease, and be dear to all.
बुधवाक्यम् इला भक्त्या त्व् अभिनन्द्य तथाकरोत् स्मृत्वा च यक्षिणीवाक्यं ततस् तुष्टाभवन् मुने
Ilā, with devotion, welcomed Budha's words and acted accordingly; remembering the yakṣiṇī's words, she became pleased, O sage.
बुधो रेमे तया प्रीत्या नीत्वा स्वस्थानम् उत्तमम् सा चापि सर्वभावेन तोषयाम् आस तं पतिम् ततो बहुतिथे काले बुधस् तुष्टो ऽवदत् प्रियाम्
Budha enjoyed her affection, bringing her to his excellent abode; she, with all her heart, pleased her husband. After much time had passed, Budha, satisfied, spoke to his beloved.
किं ते देयं मया भद्रे प्रियं यन् मनसि स्थितम्
What shall I give you, O gentle one? Tell me what dear thing is in your mind.
तद्वाक्यसमकालं तु पुत्रं देहीत्य् अभाषत इला बुधं सोमसुतं प्रीतिमन्तं प्रियं तथा
At that very moment, Ilā spoke: 'Give me a son,' to Budha, son of Soma, loving and dear.
अमोघम् एतन् मद्वीर्यं तथा प्रीतिसमुद्भवम् पुत्रस् ते भविता तस्मात् क्षत्रियो लोकविश्रुतः
This is unfailing, arising from my strength and affection; therefore, you will have a son, renowned among the kṣatriyas.
सोमवंशकरः श्रीमान् आदित्य इव तेजसा बुद्ध्या बृहस्पतिसमः क्षमया पृथिवीसमः
He will be the maker of the Soma lineage, glorious, radiant like the sun, wise like Bṛhaspati, patient like the earth.
