Thus the command was given for the forest of Uma by the gracious moon-crested one. What shall I do, O beloved, as a man, afflicted by your love? Therefore, I must not go to Uma's excellent forest.
Hearing her husband's words, the Yakshini, capable of assuming forms, became a doe with wide eyes and appeared before Ila.
The Yaksha, standing there, saw Ila's doe at that time; his mind was absorbed in hunting, especially upon seeing the doe.
Mounted alone on a horse, he went out following that doe; she slowly drew the king, who was eager for the hunt.
She went slowly to the place called the forest of Uma; the doe was invisible to him, sometimes appearing, sometimes not.
Standing, moving, and running in fear, the doe with restless eyes drew him toward the forest of Uma.
He arrived mounted on his horse and reached the Umā forest; perceiving that he had entered the Umā forest, the yakṣiṇī recognized him.
Abandoning her deer form, the yakṣiṇī, who could assume any shape at will, took on a divine appearance and stood near the aśoka tree.
Clinging to a branch with her hand, anointed with divine fragrance, slender and adorned with a celestial form, she had accomplished her purpose at that time.
Seeing the king, weary and mounted on his horse, gazing at the deer with restless eyes, she laughed.
Remembering her husband's words completely, she then spoke to the king.
Delicate one, mounted on a horse, where are you going alone? And, dressed as a man, whom are you following, O Ila?
Hearing these words addressed to Ila, the king, overcome with anger, rebuked the yakṣiṇī and again questioned the deer.
Still, the yakṣiṇī said, 'O Ila, why do you keep looking at me?' Hearing these words, he, holding his bow, remained on horseback.
Angry, the conqueror of the three worlds displayed his bow; again, she spoke to the great-souled king Ila herself.
'Look behind you, then speak to me, who am truthful and not false.' Then the king beheld her high breasts between her arms.
'What is this that has happened to me?'—thus he became bewildered.
'What is this that has happened to me? Do you know clearly? Tell me everything as it truly is. Who are you? Speak, O virtuous one.'
In the best cave of Himavat dwells my husband, the illustrious lord of the yakṣas; I am his wife, a yakṣiṇī.
In whose cave you, O king, are seated in cool comfort, whose yakṣa was slain by you in ignorance, without battle.
Therefore, in order to leave, I became a deer and entered the Umā forest; you have entered as well. Formerly, Maheśvara declared:
'Whoever, out of ignorance, enters here, that man will obtain womanhood. Therefore, you have attained womanhood; you should not grieve. Even the wise cannot fathom the wondrous ways of destiny.'
Hearing the words of the yakṣiṇī, he, mounted on his horse, became distressed; comforting him, the yakṣiṇī again spoke these words:
Womanhood has indeed arisen; you must not attempt to regain manhood. Learn the arts suitable for women: dance, song, adornment, feminine grace, feminine play, and all the duties of women.
Having obtained everything, Ilā spoke to the yakṣiṇī.
Who is the husband? What should be done? How can manhood be regained? Tell me this, O auspicious one, especially to one afflicted by sorrow. Nowhere is anything better than alleviating the suffering of the distressed.
Budha, the son of Soma, has an āśrama to the east of this forest, O fortunate one; he always visits his father.
By this very path, Budha goes to see his father Soma, the planet, and always goes to pay respects likewise.
When Budha, peaceful, arrives, reveal yourself; upon seeing him, O fortunate one, you will obtain all desires.
Then, comforting her, the yakṣiṇī vanished; the yakṣiṇī reported this, and the yakṣa also attained happiness.
