ततः प्रभृति तत् तीर्थं वृद्धासंगमम् उच्यते
From that time onward, that sacred place is called Vṛddhāsaṃgama.
इलातीर्थम् इति ख्यातं सर्वसिद्धिकरं नृणाम् ब्रह्महत्यादिपापानां पावनं सर्वकामदम्
It is known as Ilā Tīrtha, bestowing all accomplishments upon people, purifying sins such as killing a Brahmin, and granting every desire.
वैवस्वतान्वये जात इलो नाम जनेश्वरः महत्या सेनया सार्धं जगाम मृगयावनम्
In the lineage of Vaivasvata, a king named Ila was born; with his great army, he went to the hunting forest.
परिबभ्राम गहनं बहुव्यालसमाकुलम् नानाकारद्विजयुतं विटपैः परिशोभितम्
He wandered through the dense forest, teeming with many wild beasts, adorned with various birds and shining with clusters of trees.
वनेचरं नृपश्रेष्ठो मृगयागतमानसः तत्रैव मतिम् आधत्त इलो ऽमात्यान् अथाब्रवीत्
The foremost king, his mind intent on hunting, roamed the forest; there, Ila resolved and spoke to his ministers.
गच्छन्तु नगरं सर्वे मम पुत्रेण पालितम् देशं कोशं बलं राज्यं पालयन्तु पुनश् च तम्
Let all of you return to the city, governed by my son; protect the land, treasury, army, and kingdom, and also him.
वसिष्ठो ऽपि तथा यातु आदायाग्नीन् पितेव नः पत्नीभिः सहितो धीमान् अरण्ये ऽहं वसाम्य् अथ
Let Vasiṣṭha likewise depart, taking the sacred fires as our father would; I, wise, will dwell in the forest with my wives.
अरण्यभोगभुग्भिश् च वाजिवारणमानुषैः मृगयाशीलिभिः कैश्चिद् यान्तु सर्व इतः पुरीम्
Let those who delight in the pleasures of the forest—horses, elephants, humans, and some who enjoy hunting—go from here to the city.
तथेत्य् उक्त्वा ययुस् ते ऽपि स्वयं प्रायाच् छनैर् गिरिम् हिमवन्तं रत्नमयं वसंस् तत्र इलो नृपः
Saying 'so be it,' they departed; Ila himself slowly went to the jeweled mountain Himavat, and there the king dwelled.
ददर्श कन्दरं तत्र नानारत्नविचित्रितम् तत्र यक्षेश्वरः कश्चित् समन्युर् इति विश्रुतः
There he saw a cave adorned with various jewels; within, a Yakṣa lord named Samanyu was renowned.
तस्य भार्या समानाम्नी भर्तृव्रतपरायणा तस्मिन् वसत्य् असौ यक्षो रमणीये नगोत्तमे
His wife, named Samānā, devoted to her husband's vow, dwelled with the Yakṣa in that delightful, excellent city.
मृगरूपेण व्यचरद् भार्यया स महामतिः स्वेच्छया स्ववने यक्षः क्रीडते नृत्यगीतकैः
With his wife, that wise Yakṣa wandered in the form of a deer; at his pleasure, he played in his forest with dance and song.
इत्थं स यक्षो जानाति मृगरूपधरो ऽपि च इलस् तु तं न जानाति कन्दरं यक्षपालितम्
Thus, the Yakṣa knew, even while bearing the form of a deer; but Ila did not know that the cave was guarded by the Yakṣa.
यक्षस्य गेहं विपुलं नानारत्नविचित्रितम् तत्रोपविष्टो नृपतिर् महत्या सेनया वृतः
The Yakṣa's spacious house, adorned with various jewels, was where the king sat, surrounded by his great army.
वासं चक्रे स तत्रैव गेहे यक्षस्य धीमतः स यक्षो ऽधर्मकोपेन भार्यया मृगरूपधृक्
He made his dwelling there, in the house of the wise Yakṣa; the Yakṣa, angered by unrighteousness, with his wife in the form of a deer—
इलं जेतुं न शक्नोमि याचितो न ददाति च हृतं गेहं ममानेन किं करोमीत्य् अचिन्तयत्
I cannot defeat Ila, nor does he give when asked; my house has been taken by him—what should I do? Thus he pondered.
युधि मत्तं कथं हन्यां चेति स्थित्वा स यक्षराट् आत्मीयान् प्रेषयाम् आस यक्षाञ् शूरान् धनुर्धरान्
How could I kill the intoxicated one in battle? Thinking thus, the Yakṣa king sent his own brave, bow-wielding Yakṣas.
युद्धे जित्वा च राजानम् इलम् उद्धतदन्तिनम् गृहाद् यथान्यतो याति मम तत् कर्तुम् अर्हथ
Having conquered the king Ila, fierce as an enraged elephant, in battle, you must drive him from my house as one would from elsewhere.
यक्षेश्वरस्य तद् वाक्याद् यक्षास् ते युद्धदुर्मदाः इलं गत्वाब्रुवन् सर्वे निर्गच्छास्माद् गुहालयात्
At the command of the lord of the Yakshas, those Yakshas, intoxicated by battle, went to Ila and all said: 'Come out from this cave dwelling.'
न चेद् युद्धात् परिभ्रष्टः पलाय्य क्व गमिष्यसि तद् यक्षवचनात् कोपाद् युद्धं चक्रे स राजराट्
If you do not flee, defeated in battle, where will you go? At the words of the Yaksha, the king, enraged, engaged in battle.
जित्वा यक्षान् बहुविधान् उवास दश शर्वरीः यक्षेश्वरो मृगो भूत्वा भार्ययापि वने वसन्
Having conquered the Yakshas of many kinds, he remained for ten nights; the lord of the Yakshas, taking the form of a deer, lived in the forest with his wife.
हृतगेहो वनं प्राप्तो हृतभृत्यः स यक्षिणीम् प्राह चिन्तापरो भूत्वा मृगीरूपधरां प्रियाम्
Having lost his home and servants, he entered the forest; worried, he spoke to his beloved Yakshini, who had assumed the form of a doe.
राजा ऽयं दुर्मनाः कान्ते व्यसनासक्तमानसः कथम् आयाति विपदं तत्रोपायो विचिन्त्यताम्
This king, O beloved, is troubled, his mind attached to misfortune; how does he encounter calamity? Let a remedy for this be considered.
पापर्द्धिव्यसनान्तानि राज्यान्य् अखिलभूभुजाम् प्रापयोमावनं सुभ्रूर् मृगी भूत्वा मनोहरा
All the kingdoms of the earth's rulers end in evil and misfortune; O fair-browed one, let us go to the forest, you become a charming doe.
प्रविशेत् तत्र राजायं स्त्री भविष्यत्य् असंशयम् करणीयं त्वया भद्रे न चैतद् युज्यते मम अहं तु पुरुषो येन त्वं पुनः स्त्री च यक्षिणी
There, the king will surely enter, and a woman will arise; you must do this, O gentle one, for it does not suit me. I am a man, and you are again a woman, a Yakshini.
कथं त्वया न गन्तव्यम् उमावनम् अनुत्तमम् गते ऽपि त्वयि को दोषस् तन् मे कथय तत्त्वतः
Why should you not go to the excellent forest of Uma? Even if you go, what fault is there? Tell me the truth of this.
हिमवत्पर्वतश्रेष्ठ उमया सहितः शिवः देवैर् गणैर् अनुवृतो विचचार यथासुखम् पार्वती शंकरं प्राह कदाचिद् रहसि स्थितम्
On the great mountain Himavat, Shiva, accompanied by Uma, wandered at ease, followed by gods and attendants. Once, Parvati spoke to Shankara in private.
स्त्रीणाम् एष स्वभावो ऽस्ति रतं गोपायितं भवेत् तस्मान् मे नियतं देशम् आज्ञया रक्षितं तव
This is the nature of women: pleasure must be guarded. Therefore, by your command, let my place be protected.
देहि मे त्रिदशेशान उमावनम् इति श्रुतम् विना त्वया गणेशेन कार्त्तिकेयेन नन्दिना
Give me, O lord of the gods, the forest of Uma, as I have heard; without you, Ganesha, Karttikeya, or Nandi.
यस् त्व् अत्र प्रविशेन् नाथ स्त्रीत्वं तस्य भवेद् इति
Whoever enters here, O lord, shall become a woman.
