The wise in policy declare that enemies are to be wholly distrusted and hated; they are not to be trusted, nor confided in, nor made partners in counsel.
Nectar must not be given to them, for then they would become immortal; if those Daityas, our enemies, become immortal, we shall not be able to defeat them, so nectar must not be given to them.
Having thus deliberated, the gods then spoke to Brihaspati.
Where shall we go? Where should the ritual be performed? Where shall we drink? Where shall we stay? Tell us this first, O Brihaspati, just as it is.
Let the immortals go to Brahma and ask him about the supreme course; for he is the knower, the speaker, the giver, and the grandsire.
Hearing the words of Brihaspati, they then came to me; all the gods bowed to me and reported everything that had occurred.
Then, at the command of the gods, my son, I went with them to Hari; everything was told to Vishnu and to Shambhu, the destroyer of poison.
I, Vishnu, and Shambhu, along with the gods, Gandharvas, and Kinnaras, went to the cave of Meru; the demons did not know of this.
Having appointed Hari as the protector, they stood ready to drink Soma; among them, Aditya was recognized as worthy to partake of Soma, and the others were not.
Soma gave the portion of nectar to the givers, and the wielder of the discus stood as protector; the Daityas, Danavas, and Rakshasas did not know of this.
Except for Rahu, the great wise one, son of Simhika, who took the form of a god and entered among the Maruts to drink Soma.
Assuming the form of a Marut and holding a drinking vessel, Rahu was recognized by the Sun, who informed Soma about the Daitya.
Then Soma gave the nectar to that Daitya, who had taken the form of a god; Soma then reported this to Vishnu.
Vishnu, raising his discus, swiftly cut off the head of the Daitya who had drunk the nectar; but, O child, that head became immortal.
The body, deprived of its head, fell to the earth; that body, touched by nectar, fell on the southern bank.
O tiger among sages, the body shook the earth near the Gautami; and that body, my son, became wondrously immortal.
The body longed for the head, and the head longed for the body; both became immortal, and this Daitya became exceedingly powerful.
With the head united to the body, he began to devour all the gods; therefore, let us first destroy this body lying on the earth. Then all the gods, greatly agitated, approached Shankara.
O best of gods, destroy the Daitya's body lying on the earth; you are the ocean of compassion, the protector of those who seek refuge.
Do so, that the Daitya's body may not be joined with the head.
Then the Lord sent forth his supreme power, the goddess who is his very essence, accompanied by the Mothers, the protectress of the worlds.
The goddess, bearing the Lord’s weapon and endowed with his power, went to the place where the body lay upon the earth, desiring to devour it.
All the gods, comforting her, left only the head there on Mount Meru; the goddess’s body remained there, and she fought for many years.
There Rahu spoke to the gods: ‘Having pierced my body before, the finest essence remains here; let it be drawn out from the body.’
If the supreme, excellent nectar is separated from the body, the body will instantly be reduced to ashes; therefore, let them do this first.
Hearing these words of Rahu, all the enemies of the demons were pleased and anointed him, saying, ‘You shall become the planet among the planets, filled with joy.’
Then, by the command of the gods, the goddess power, called Īśvarī, pierced the demon lord’s body, endowed with the power of the gods.
Swiftly extracting the supreme, excellent nectar and placing it outside, Ambika then began to devour that body.
She who is called Kālarātrī and Bhadrakālī, of great might, placed the supreme essence, the best of all essences, there.
That supreme essence, thus placed, flowed forth and became a river; the drawn-out nectar, also placed there, she did not consume.
