Undertaking the silent vow and a twelve-year consecration, he remained, by his father's command, while the king dwelt in the forest.
The sage Vasiṣṭha, with the help of priests and teachers, protected Ayodhyā, the kingdom, and the inner palace.
But Satyavrata, due to his youth and the force of destiny, always harbored greater anger toward Vasiṣṭha.
When his beloved son was being expelled from the kingdom by his father, the sage did not restrain him, though there were many reasons to do so.
The completion of the marriage mantras is at the seventh step, but Satyavrata did not fulfill this; therefore, he was abandoned at the seventh step.
Knowing the law, Vasiṣṭha did not protect me—O twice-born ones! At that time, Satyavrata became angry with Vasiṣṭha in his mind.
But the venerable Vasiṣṭha, acting with discernment of virtue, did so; yet Satyavrata did not understand his silent intention.
Because of the great-souled father's dissatisfaction, for twelve years the rain-god did not send rain.
Thus, the difficult vow now undertaken on earth was performed as atonement for the family, O Brāhmaṇas, so that it might be fulfilled.
The venerable Vasiṣṭha did not prevent him, though abandoned by his father, thinking, 'I myself will anoint his son.'
He, strong in resolve, endured that vow for twelve years, though there was no meat available for the great-souled Vasiṣṭha.
The prince saw a cow that yielded every desire; driven by anger, delusion, exhaustion, and hunger, he seized her.
The king, following the custom of the land, killed her, O best of sages, and he himself, along with the sons of Viśvāmitra, ate that flesh.
He caused them to eat it; hearing this, Vasiṣṭha too became angry with him.
I would surely cast you down, cruel one, with this stake, unless these two stakes of yours are not made again.
By your father's displeasure, by the killing of the sacred cow, and by eating what was not properly purified, your transgression is threefold.
Thus, seeing his three stakes, the great ascetic said, 'Triśaṅku'; thus he became known as Triśaṅku.
By him, the support of Viśvāmitra's wives was accomplished; therefore, the pleased sage granted Triśaṅku a boon.
When pressed to choose a boon, the prince asked for this: 'May I go to heaven in this very body.' Thus he requested the boon.
When the twelve-year drought ended and the fear of famine had passed, he was consecrated in his father's kingdom and then performed the royal sacrifice.
In the sight of the gods and of Vasiṣṭha, Kauśika, the great ascetic, raised him bodily to heaven.
His wife, named Satyarathā, born of the Kaikeyi lineage, bore him a son, Hariścandra, free from sin.
That king was indeed Hariścandra, known as the son of Triśaṅku; he performed the Rājasūya sacrifice and was renowned as a universal sovereign.
Hariścandra had a son named Rohita, a prince; from Rohita came Harita, and from Harita, Cañcu, who is called Hārita.
Vijaya, best of sages, was born as the son of Cañcu; he conquered the whole earth, and thus he is known as Vijaya.
His son was Ruruka, a king skilled in righteousness and wealth; Ruruka's son was Vṛka, and from Vṛka was born Bāhu.
The Haihayas and Tālaṅghas expelled that king; his wife, carrying a child, entered the hermitage of Aurva.
He was righteous and virtuous, and lived in the age of righteousness; Sagara, the son of Bāhu, was conceived together with poison.
Having reached Aurva's hermitage, protected by the Bhārgava, King Sagara obtained the fiery weapon from Bhārgava.
He conquered the earth, having slain the Tālaṅghas and Haihayas, and, O best of sages, the righteous Sagara expelled the Śakas, Pahlavas, Kṣatriyas, and Pāradas from their dharma.
