If the gods assemble on the southern bank of the Gautamī, let the best of the gods come, making the sacrifice the focus.
The Gandharvas, always fond of women, made a wager with me; having agreed, the hosts of gods abided by Sarasvatī's words.
Then, on the sacred Devagiri, divine messengers summoned the gods, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and serpents separately.
From then on, O sage, the mountain became known as Devagiri; there assembled the hosts of gods, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and Kinnaras.
The gods, Siddhas, sages, and the eight classes of divine beings gathered as the great sacrifice was performed on the bank of the Gautamī by the sages.
There, surrounded by the gods, the thousand-eyed one spoke.
Then, having honored the Gandharvas near Sarasvatī, she said: 'Let there be a wager between us, with the immortal soul as the stake.'
At her command, the Gandharvas, who were passionate for women, gave Soma to the gods and took Sarasvatī for themselves.
Soma became the possession of the Apsarases, the Gandharvas, and Sarasvatī; yet the goddess of speech remained there, close to the gods.
She comes secretly every day, saying, 'Let it be done quietly'; therefore, O Nārada, the purchase of Soma is done in this manner.
It must be conducted quietly, especially in the buying of Soma; thus Soma and Sarasvatī came to belong to the gods.
Neither Soma nor Sarasvatī remained with the Gandharvas; then all of them came to the bank of the Gautamī for the sake of Soma.
Cows, gods, mountains, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Siddhas, Sādhyas, sages, Guhyakas, Gandharvas, Maruts, serpents, all herbs, mothers, and guardians of the worlds—
O sage, twenty-five rivers gathered in the Gaṅgā there, where the full offering is given; that is called the place of the complete narration.
All those that have gathered in the Gautamī, as previously mentioned, listen in brief, O Nārada, to the names of those sacred fords.

The confluence with Vaiṇavī, likewise with Kṛśarā, the confluence with Vāsavī, and also Śivaśaryā and Śikhī—
Kusumbhikā, Upārathyā, Śāntijā, Devajā, then Aja, Vṛddha, Sura, and Bhadra—all these joined with the Gautamī.
These and many others, accompanied by streams and rivers, all the sacred fords on earth, came to the mountain of the gods.
For the sake of Soma, and others as well, they came to the sacrificial pavilion; those sacred fords gathered in the Gaṅgā in due order.
Some appeared in the form of rivers, some in the form of streams, some as lakes, and some in the form of hymns.
All those are renowned as distinct sacred fords; in them, bathing, recitation, oblation, and offerings to ancestors are performed.

They grant all desires to people, bestow enjoyment, and are vessels of liberation; whoever recites or remembers them becomes freed from all sins and attains the city of Viṣṇu.
There is a place called Pravarāsaṃgama, where the greatest river flows, and where the god Siddheśvara, benefactor of all worlds, resides.
There occurred a fierce encounter between the gods and the demons; yet, O great sage, there was also mutual affection among them.
Thus, the gods and demons, seeking each other's welfare, consulted together upon reaching Mount Meru.
By producing nectar, we shall attain immortality; let us all drink this supreme nectar and become deathless.
United, we shall protect the worlds and attain happiness, abandoning conflict, for conflict is the cause of suffering.
Freed from envy, we shall enjoy the wealth gained through friendship, for the conduct rooted in affection always brings happiness to us.
