There, many sacred and renowned pilgrimage sites, celebrated by the gods and others, are found; listen from me, O wise one, to the names of these places.
There are eight thousand and fourteen holy places, beginning with those of Hariścandra, Śunaḥśepa, Viśvāmitra, and Sarohita.
Bathing and giving gifts at these places bestow the fruit of a human sacrifice; the greatness of these holy sites has been declared, O best of sages.
Whoever recites, causes to be recited, or listens to this with devotion, though childless, obtains a son and whatever else is dear to the heart.
It is known as the Soma-tīrtha, which increases the joy of the ancestors; listen carefully, Nārada, to the highly meritorious event that took place there.
Soma, the king made of nectar, was once among the Gandharvas, not among the gods; then the gods came to me and spoke these words.
Soma, brought by the Gandharvas, once gave life to the gods; but the hosts of gods and the sages, greatly distressed, said: 'Let a way be devised so that Soma may become ours.'
Then Speech said to the gods: 'The Gandharvas are always passionate for women; after giving them me, O gods, you should obtain Soma from them.'
The immortals replied to Speech: 'We are not able to give you away; yet, without you, we cannot remain, nor can we be without Soma.'
Again Speech said to the gods: 'I will return here again; meanwhile, let a plan be made and a great sacrifice be performed.'
If the gods assemble on the southern bank of the Gautamī, let the best of the gods come, making the sacrifice the focus.
The Gandharvas, always fond of women, made a wager with me; having agreed, the hosts of gods abided by Sarasvatī's words.
Then, on the sacred Devagiri, divine messengers summoned the gods, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and serpents separately.
From then on, O sage, the mountain became known as Devagiri; there assembled the hosts of gods, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and Kinnaras.
The gods, Siddhas, sages, and the eight classes of divine beings gathered as the great sacrifice was performed on the bank of the Gautamī by the sages.
There, surrounded by the gods, the thousand-eyed one spoke.
Then, having honored the Gandharvas near Sarasvatī, she said: 'Let there be a wager between us, with the immortal soul as the stake.'
At her command, the Gandharvas, who were passionate for women, gave Soma to the gods and took Sarasvatī for themselves.
Soma became the possession of the Apsarases, the Gandharvas, and Sarasvatī; yet the goddess of speech remained there, close to the gods.
She comes secretly every day, saying, 'Let it be done quietly'; therefore, O Nārada, the purchase of Soma is done in this manner.
It must be conducted quietly, especially in the buying of Soma; thus Soma and Sarasvatī came to belong to the gods.
Neither Soma nor Sarasvatī remained with the Gandharvas; then all of them came to the bank of the Gautamī for the sake of Soma.
Cows, gods, mountains, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Siddhas, Sādhyas, sages, Guhyakas, Gandharvas, Maruts, serpents, all herbs, mothers, and guardians of the worlds—
O sage, twenty-five rivers gathered in the Gaṅgā there, where the full offering is given; that is called the place of the complete narration.
All those that have gathered in the Gautamī, as previously mentioned, listen in brief, O Nārada, to the names of those sacred fords.
Somatīrtha, Gāndharva, Devatīrtha, then Pūrṇatīrtha, after that Śāla, and the confluence with Śrīparṇā—
The sacred confluence called Svāgatā, the meeting with Kusumā, the confluence of Puṣṭi, the auspicious confluence with Karṇikā—
The confluence with Vaiṇavī, likewise with Kṛśarā, the confluence with Vāsavī, and also Śivaśaryā and Śikhī—
Kusumbhikā, Upārathyā, Śāntijā, Devajā, then Aja, Vṛddha, Sura, and Bhadra—all these joined with the Gautamī.
These and many others, accompanied by streams and rivers, all the sacred fords on earth, came to the mountain of the gods.
