The king also said to Varuṇa, 'The animal is toothless and unfit; when the animal’s teeth have come in, then come, O lord of waters.'
Hearing the king’s words, the lord of waters departed again; and, O Nārada, when the teeth had come in at seven years,
Again he said to the king, 'Sacrifice now'; then the king said to Varuṇa, 'These teeth will fall out, O lord of waters.'
'They will grow again, and others as well; then I will sacrifice—go now.' Again Varuṇa departed; when the new teeth came in, O Nārada, he said to the king, 'Sacrifice now,' and the king replied to the lord of waters.
When a Kshatriya becomes the sacrificial animal in a ritual, O lord of waters, and when he knows the science of archery, then he becomes the best of sacrificial victims.
Hearing the king’s words, Varuna returned to his own abode; and when Rohita became skilled in weapons and missiles,
That subduer of foes became learned in all the Vedas and treatises; when Rohita reached sixteen years, he attained the position of crown prince.
He became joyful there, where the king and Rohita were together; Varuna arrived and said, 'Now offer your son in sacrifice.'
Saying 'Om,' the best of kings addressed the priests, as Rohita, his eldest son, and Varuna listened.
Come, my son, great hero; I will sacrifice you to Varuna.
Then Rohita said to his father, 'What is this?' And his father explained everything to him in detail, as Varuna listened.
O great king, I, together with the priests and the chief priest, will quickly and purely sacrifice to Vishnu, lord of the worlds, with an animal; O Varuna, you should permit this.
Hearing Rohita’s words, the lord of waters was then seized by great anger and caused dropsy.
Rohita, son of King Harishchandra, went to the forest, taking his divine bow, mounted on a chariot, free from sorrow.
Where King Harishchandra, having worshipped Varuna, obtained a son on the Ganga, there Rohita also arrived.
Then five years passed; in the sixth year, while staying there, the prince heard of the king’s illness.
He thought, 'What fruit or purpose is there in a son who, having been born, brings suffering to his father?'
On that bank, the king’s son saw holy sages; on the bank of the Ganga, he saw the best of seers dwelling.
He saw Ajigarta, famed as the son of a sage, accompanied by his three sons and wife, whose means of living were exhausted; seeing him, the king’s son bowed and spoke these words:
Why are you emaciated, with your livelihood diminished, and why do you appear so dejected?
Ajigarta also spoke to Rohita, the king’s son.
There is no means of sustenance for the body, and I have many dependents; without food, we will die. Tell me, what should we do?
Hearing that, the prince again spoke to the sage at that time.
What is in your mind? Tell me, best of speakers.
I have no gold, silver, cows, grain, garments, or such things, O tiger among kings; I have no means of livelihood.
I have sons, and a wife as well; I am the fifth among them. O best of kings, none of these can be bought with food.
What do you wish to buy, O wise one Ajigarta? Speak the truth to me; nothing else should be said, for brahmins are speakers of truth.
Of my three sons, or myself, or even my wife—take any one of us; by selling, we may live.
What use is a wife, O wise one? What use is an old man like me? Give my young son, whichever of my sons you desire.
I will not buy your eldest son, Śunahpuccha, O Rohita; nor does their mother wish to sell the youngest. Therefore, I will buy the middle one, Śunaḥśepa; state the price.
