Even on the shore of the lake, the sin remained for a divine thousand years; meanwhile, O sage, the gods became without Indra.
The gods, undisturbed, deliberated how Indra might be restored; there I spoke to the gods, designating a place for the sin.
For the purification of Indra, let him be consecrated in the Gautamī; where he is anointed, his soul will be purified and he will become Indra again.
Having thus resolved, they quickly went to the Gautamī; there, the lord of the gods bathed, along with the gods and sages.
All of them stood desiring to consecrate the beloved of Śacī; as Indra was about to be anointed, Gautama, enraged, spoke.
They wish to consecrate sinful Mahendra, who lay with his teacher's wife; I could at once reduce them all to ashes—let the enemies of the demons depart quickly.
Hearing the words of the sage, they abandoned the Gautamī and, taking Indra with haste, all went to the Narmadā.
On the northern bank of the Narmadā they stood for the consecration; as Indra was about to be anointed, the venerable sage Māṇḍavya—
—said, 'If the consecration takes place, I will reduce him to ashes.' The immortals honored Māṇḍavya with reasonings and praises.
O sage, wherever this thousand-eyed Indra is consecrated, there arises a most terrible obstacle.
Bring peace to that, O auspicious one; be gracious and grant a boon. In the place where we remove the impurity, grant many boons.
We will all give gifts in that land; you should permit it, in the place where the consecration of the lord of gods will occur.
That place will grant all desires to men, endowed with grains, trees, and fruits; there will never be lack of rain nor famine.
Then the best of sages, Māṇḍavya, honored by the world, agreed; there the consecration was performed, and the impurity was removed likewise.
When the gods and sages spoke thus, that region became Mālava, after the installation of the lord of the gods and the birth of the pure one.
Bringing the Gautamī Gaṅgā, they consecrated him for merit; the gods, the sages, I myself, and Viṣṇu did so likewise.
Vasiṣṭha, Gautama, Agastya, Atri, and Kaśyapa, along with other sages, gods, yakṣas, and serpents, were present.
They performed the bathing and consecration with that holy water; again, I and the husband of Śacī used water from a water-pot.
Having been consecrated with water there, the river became holy; it was sprinkled, and thus, the Gaṅgā was joined there.
The confluence there became renowned, always frequented by sages; from that time, that sacred confluence is called a holy tīrtha.
At the confluence of the sprinkled river, the sacred place is called 'Indra's'; there, seven thousand auspicious tīrthas existed.
Bathing and giving gifts in those places, especially at the confluence, all such acts are imperishable; no deliberation is needed here.
Whoever recites or hears this account of merit is freed from all sins arising from mind, speech, and bodily actions.
The Paulastya tīrtha has been described, bestowing all accomplishments upon people; I will now speak of its power, which grants restoration of lost kingdoms.
The lord of the northern quarter, endowed with prosperity and accomplishment, was formerly the king of Laṅkā, the eldest son of Viśravas.
His brothers were powerful and of immeasurable radiance: Rāvaṇa, Kumbhakarṇa, and Vibhīṣaṇa, rivals to one another.
They too were sons of Viśravas, born of a rākṣasī; they were rākṣasas, and with the aerial chariot granted by me, the lord of wealth went with his brothers.
He comes to me always, devoted, and approaches; but Rāvaṇa's mother, angered, spoke to her sons.
I will die and not live, sons, because of disfigurement; the gods and the demons were rival brothers to each other.
Desiring mutual destruction, driven by the urge for victory and supremacy, such beings are not truly men, nor capable, nor seekers of victory; whoever accepts rivalry, his life is meaningless.
