Following Gautama's words, the descendant of Bhṛgu went to the Gaṅgā, bathed, became thoroughly pure, and that boy offered praise.
I am a child, with the mind of a child, O Lord who bears the crescent moon; I know nothing of how to praise you—salutations to you.
Abandoned by my teacher, I have no friend or companion; you alone are my Lord in every way, O Lord of the universe—salutations to you.
You are the teacher of those who possess teachers, the greatest among the great; I am but a small child, O all-pervading one—salutations to you.
For the sake of knowledge, O Lord of the gods, I do not know your path; please look upon me with compassion, O witness of the world—salutations to you.
As he thus praised, the Lord of the gods became pleased with him.
Choose a boon as you wish, whatever is difficult even for the gods to obtain.
The poet, with hands joined and noble mind, addressed the Lord of the gods.
The knowledge which is not accessible even to Brahmā and the sages—that knowledge, O Lord, I request from you; you are my teacher and deity.
The best of the gods granted to Śukra the mṛtasaṃjīvinī knowledge, unknown even to the gods, when he requested it.
Other worldly knowledge and Vedic knowledge are accessible to others; but when Śaṃkara is pleased, what remains to be considered?
Having obtained the great knowledge, he went to his father and teacher; and the poet, honored for his knowledge, became the teacher of the Daityas.
Then, at some other time and for another reason, Kaca, the son of Bṛhaspati, obtained that knowledge from the poet.
From Kaca, Bṛhaspati also, and then the gods, each separately, obtained the great knowledge called mṛtajīvinī.
Where that knowledge was obtained by the poet, worshipping Maheśvara with knowledge, on the northern bank of the Gautamī, that is called Śukra-tīrtha.
The mṛtasaṃjīvinī tīrtha increases lifespan and health; any bathing or giving there bestows inexhaustible merit.
That which is known as Indra's Tīrtha destroys the sin of killing a Brahmin; even by remembering it, the multitude of sins and afflictions are destroyed.
Formerly, O Nārada, after the slaying of Vṛtra, Brahmahatyā followed the lord of Śacī; seeing her, Hari appeared fearful.
Then Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, fled here and there; wherever he went, the sin of killing followed Indra.
He entered a great lake and reached a lotus stalk; there, having taken the form of a thread, the lord of Śacī dwelled.
Even on the shore of the lake, the sin remained for a divine thousand years; meanwhile, O sage, the gods became without Indra.
The gods, undisturbed, deliberated how Indra might be restored; there I spoke to the gods, designating a place for the sin.
For the purification of Indra, let him be consecrated in the Gautamī; where he is anointed, his soul will be purified and he will become Indra again.
Having thus resolved, they quickly went to the Gautamī; there, the lord of the gods bathed, along with the gods and sages.
All of them stood desiring to consecrate the beloved of Śacī; as Indra was about to be anointed, Gautama, enraged, spoke.
They wish to consecrate sinful Mahendra, who lay with his teacher's wife; I could at once reduce them all to ashes—let the enemies of the demons depart quickly.
Hearing the words of the sage, they abandoned the Gautamī and, taking Indra with haste, all went to the Narmadā.
On the northern bank of the Narmadā they stood for the consecration; as Indra was about to be anointed, the venerable sage Māṇḍavya—
—said, 'If the consecration takes place, I will reduce him to ashes.' The immortals honored Māṇḍavya with reasonings and praises.
O sage, wherever this thousand-eyed Indra is consecrated, there arises a most terrible obstacle.
