भगवन् न्यस्तशस्त्रो ऽहम् अयं तु तनयो मम भविष्यति द्विजश्रेष्ठ धुन्धुमारो न संशयः
O venerable one, I myself have laid down my weapons, but this son of mine, O best of twice-born, will become the slayer of Dhundhu, without doubt.
स तं व्यादिश्य तनयं राजर्षिर् धुन्धुमारणे जगाम पर्वतायैव नृपतिः संशितव्रतः
Having thus appointed his son to slay Dhundhu, the royal sage, steadfast in his vow, went to the mountain.
कुवलाश्वस् तु पुत्राणां शतेन सह भो द्विजाः प्रायाद् उत्तङ्कसहितो धुन्धोस् तस्य निबर्हणे
But Kuvalāśva, powerful and accompanied by a hundred sons, O twice-born ones, set out with Uttaṅka to destroy Dhundhu.
तम् आविशत् तदा विष्णुस् तेजसा भगवान् प्रभुः उत्तङ्कस्य नियोगाद् वै लोकानां हितकाम्यया
Then the blessed Lord Viṣṇu entered him with his energy, by the command of Uttaṅka, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
तस्मिन् प्रयाते दुर्धर्षे दिवि शब्दो महान् अभूत् एष श्रीमान् अवध्यो ऽद्य धुन्धुमारो भविष्यति
As that unconquerable one departed, a great sound arose in the heavens: 'Today this glorious one, Dhundhumāra, will become invulnerable.'
दिव्यैर् गन्धैश् च माल्यैश् च तं देवाः समवाकिरन् देवदुन्दुभयश् चैव प्रणेदुर् द्विजसत्तमाः
And the gods showered him with divine fragrances and garlands, and the celestial drums resounded, O best of twice-born.
स गत्वा जयतां श्रेष्ठस् तनयैः सह वीर्यवान् समुद्रं खानयाम् आस वालुकान्तरम् अव्ययम्
He, the foremost of the victorious, went forth with his valiant sons and began to dig into the endless sand, O twice-born ones.
तस्य पुत्रैः खनद्भिश् च वालुकान्तर्हितस् तदा धुन्धुर् आसादितो विप्रा दिशम् आवृत्य पश्चिमाम्
Then, O sages, as his sons dug into the sand, Dhundhu, hidden there, was discovered, blocking the western direction.
मुखजेनाग्निना क्रोधाल् लोकान् उद्वर्तयन्न् इव वारि सुस्राव वेगेन महोदधिर् इवोदये
With fire issuing from his mouth out of anger, as if overturning the worlds, he poured forth water with force, like the great ocean at its rise.
सौमस्य मुनिशार्दूला वरोर्मिकलिलो महान् तस्य पुत्रशतं दग्धं त्रिभिर् ऊनं तु रक्षसा
O best of sages, from the great mass of waves and mud, a hundred sons of his were burned by the demon, save three.
ततः स राजा द्युतिमान् राक्षसं तं महाबलम् आससाद महातेजा धुन्धुं धुन्धुविनाशनः
Then that radiant king, destroyer of Dhundhu, approached the mighty and powerful demon Dhundhu.
तस्य वारिमयं वेगम् आपीय स नराधिपः योगी योगेन वह्निं च शमयाम् आस वारिणा
That lord of men, being a yogi, by his yoga absorbed the force of water, and with water subdued the fire.
निहत्य तं महाकायं बलेनोदकराक्षसम् उत्तङ्कं दर्शयाम् आस कृतकर्मा नराधिपः
Having slain that great-bodied, water-dwelling demon by his strength, the king, his task accomplished, presented himself before Uttanka.
उत्तङ्कस् तु वरं प्रादात् तस्मै राज्ञे महात्मने ददौ तस्याक्षयं वित्तं शत्रुभिश् चापराजितम्
Uttanka then granted a boon to that great-souled king: he gave him inexhaustible wealth, unconquered by enemies.
धर्मे रतिं च सततं स्वर्गे वासं तथाक्षयम् पुत्राणां चाक्षयांल् लोकान् स्वर्गे ये रक्षसा हताः
He also granted him constant delight in righteousness, unending residence in heaven, and for his sons who were slain by the demon, eternal worlds in heaven.
तस्य पुत्रास् त्रयः शिष्टा दृढाश्वो ज्येष्ठ उच्यते चन्द्राश्वकपिलाश्वौ तु कनीयांसौ कुमारकौ
Of his sons, three remained: Dṛḍhāśva, the eldest, is named; Candrāśva and Kapilāśva, the two younger boys.
धौन्धुमारेर् दृढाश्वस्य हर्यश्वश् चात्मजः स्मृतः हर्यश्वस्य निकुम्भो ऽभूत् क्षत्रधर्मरतः सदा
Of Dṛḍhāśva, son of Dhundhumāra, Haryaśva is remembered as his son; Haryaśva's son was Nikumbha, ever devoted to the duties of a kṣatriya.
संहताश्वो निकुम्भस्य सुतो रणविशारदः अकृशाश्वकृशाश्वौ तु संहताश्वसुतौ द्विजाः
Nikumbha's son was Saṃhatāśva, skilled in battle; and Saṃhatāśva's sons, O twice-born, were Akṛśāśva and Kṛśāśva.
तस्य हैमवती कन्या सतां मता दृषद्वती विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु पुत्रश् चास्याः प्रसेनजित्
He had a daughter, famed as Dṛṣadvatī, esteemed among the virtuous in the three worlds, and her son was Prasenajit.
लेभे प्रसेनजिद् भार्यां गौरीं नाम पतिव्रताम् अभिशस्ता तु सा भर्त्रा नदी वै बाहुदाभवत्
Prasenajit obtained as wife Gaurī, devoted to her husband; but, cursed by her husband, she became the river Bāhudā.
तस्य पुत्रो महान् आसीद् युवनाश्वो नराधिपः मान्धाता युवनाश्वस्य त्रिलोकविजयी सुतः
He had a great son, Yuvanāśva, lord of men; Māndhātṛ was the son of Yuvanāśva, conqueror of the three worlds.
तस्य चैत्ररथी भार्या शशबिन्दोः सुताभवत् साध्वी बिन्दुमती नाम रूपेणासदृशी भुवि
His wife was Caitrarathī, daughter of Śaśabindu, a virtuous woman named Bindumatī, unequalled in beauty on earth.
पतिव्रता च ज्येष्ठा च भ्रातॄणाम् अयुतस्य वै तस्याम् उत्पादयाम् आस मान्धाता द्वौ सुतौ द्विजाः
She was devoted to her husband and the eldest among ten thousand brothers; in her, Māndhātṛ begot two sons, O twice-born.
पुरुकुत्सं च धर्मज्ञं मुचुकुन्दं च पार्थिवम् पुरुकुत्ससुतस् त्व् आसीत् त्रसदस्युर् महीपतिः
Purukutsa, knower of righteousness, and the king Mucukunda; Purukutsa's son was Trasadasyu, lord of the earth.
नर्मदायाम् अथोत्पन्नः संभूतस् तस्य चात्मजः संभूतस्य तु दायादस् त्रिधन्वा रिपुमर्दनः
In the Narmadā was born Saṃbhūta, his son; and Saṃbhūta's heir was Tridhanvan, destroyer of foes.
राज्ञस् त्रिधन्वनस् त्व् आसीद् विद्वांस् त्रय्यारुणः प्रभुः तस्य सत्यव्रतो नाम कुमारो ऽभून् महाबलः
King Tridhanvan's son was the learned and mighty Trayyaruṇa; his son was the powerful prince Satyavrata.
परिग्रहणमन्त्राणां विघ्नं चक्रे सुदुर्मतिः येन भार्या कृतोद्वाहा हृता चैव परस्य ह
With evil intent, he caused an obstacle to the marriage mantras, by which another man's wife, though already wed, was taken away.
बाल्यात् कामाच् च मोहाच् च साहसाच् चापलेन च जहार कन्यां कामार्तः कस्यचित् पुरवासिनः
Driven by desire, childishness, delusion, recklessness, and impulsiveness, he abducted the daughter of a certain townsman, overcome by passion.
अधर्मशङ्कुना तेन तं स त्रय्यारुणो ऽत्यजत् अपध्वंसेति बहुशो वदन् क्रोधसमन्वितः
Because of this sinful act, the priest of the three Vedas abandoned him, repeatedly declaring in anger, 'Let him be cast out!'
सो ऽब्रवीत् पितरं त्यक्तः क्व गच्छामीति वै मुहुः पिता च तम् अथोवाच श्वपाकैः सह वर्तय
Thus abandoned, he repeatedly asked his father, 'Where shall I go?' And his father replied, 'Live among the outcastes.'
