गरुडस्य गृहे नागो बद्धस् तिष्ठति सत्वरम् गत्वा तं जगताम् ईशं विष्णुं स्तुहि जनार्दनम्
The serpent is bound in Garuda's house. Go quickly and praise Vishnu, the Lord of the worlds, Janardana.
बद्धं नागं काश्यपेन मद्वाक्याद् आनय स्वयम् तत् प्रभोर् वचनं श्रुत्वा नन्दी गत्वा श्रियः पतिम्
Bring the bound serpent, son of Kashyapa, yourself at my command. Hearing the master's words, Nandi went to the Lord of fortune.
व्यज्ञापयत् स्वयं वाक्यं विष्णुं लोकपरायणम् नारायणः प्रीतमना गरुडं वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
He himself conveyed the message to Vishnu, the refuge of the worlds. Narayana, pleased in mind, spoke to Garuda.
विनतात्मज मे वाक्यान् नन्दिने देहि पन्नगम् कम्पमानस् तद् आकर्ण्य नेत्य् उवाच विहंगमः विष्णुम् अप्य् अब्रवीत् कोपात् सुपर्णो नन्दिनो ऽन्तिके
Son of Vinata, give the serpent to Nandi at my command. Trembling, the bird heard this and said 'No,' and angrily spoke to Vishnu near Nandi.
यद् यत् प्रियतमं किंचिद् भृत्येभ्यः प्रभविष्णवः दास्यन्त्य् अन्ये भवान् नैव मयानीतं हरिष्यति
Whatever is most dear, O mighty lord, others may give to their servants, but what I have brought will not be taken by anyone but you.
पश्य देवं त्रिनयनं नागं मोक्ष्यति नन्दिना मयोपपादितं नागं त्वं तु दास्यसि नन्दिने
See, the three-eyed god will release the serpent for Nandi. The serpent I have brought, you must give to Nandi.
त्वां वहामि सदा स्वामिन् मम देयं सदा त्वया मयोपपादितं नागं वक्तुं देहीति नोचितम्
I always carry you, master; what is mine should always be yours. It is not proper for me to give the serpent I have brought to Nandi.
सतां प्रभूणां नेयं स्याद् वृत्तिः सद्वृत्तिकारिणाम् सन्तो दास्यन्ति भृत्येभ्यो मदुपात्तहरो भवान्
This should not be the conduct of noble masters toward virtuous servants. The good give to their servants; you, whom I have brought, take away.
दैत्याञ् जयसि संग्रामे मद्बलेनैव केशव अहं महाबलीत्य् एवं मुधैव श्लाघते भवान्
You conquer the demons in battle only by my strength, O Kesava. Though I am very powerful, you boast in vain.
गरुडस्येति तद् वाक्यं श्रुत्वा चक्रगदाधरः विहस्य नन्दिनः पार्श्वे पश्यद्भिर् लोकपालकैः
Hearing Garuda's words, the wielder of discus and mace laughed, standing beside Nandi, watched by the guardians of the worlds.
इदम् आह महाबुद्धिर् मां समुह्य कृशो भवान् त्वद्बलाद् असुरान् सर्वाञ् जेष्ये ऽहं खगसत्तम
This wise one says to me, 'You are weak.' By your strength, O best of birds, I will defeat all the demons.
इत्य् उक्त्वा श्रीपतिर् ब्रह्मञ् शान्तकोपो ऽब्रवीद् इदम् वहाङ्गुलिं करस्याशु कनिष्ठां नन्दिनो ऽन्तिके
Having spoken thus, the Lord of fortune, with anger calmed, addressed Brahma: 'Place your little finger quickly near Nandi.'
गरुडस्य ततो मूर्ध्नि न्यस्येदं पुनर् अब्रवीत् सत्यं मां वहसे नित्यं पश्य धर्मं विहंगम
Then, placing his finger on Garuda's head, he spoke again: 'It is true you always carry me. See the righteousness, O bird.'
न्यस्तायां च ततो ऽङ्गुल्यां शिरः कुक्षौ समाविशत् कुक्षिश् च चरणस्यान्तः प्राविशच् चूर्णितो ऽभवत् ततः कृताञ्जलिर् दीनो व्यथितो लज्जयान्वितः
When the finger was placed, the head entered the belly, and the belly entered the foot; he was crushed and became so. Then, with joined palms, distressed, afflicted, and filled with shame.
त्राहि त्राहि जगन्नाथ भृत्यं माम् अपराधिनम् त्वं प्रभुः सर्वलोकानां धर्ता धार्यस् त्वम् एव च
Save me, save me, Lord of the universe! I am your servant and offender. You are the master of all worlds, the supporter and the one to be supported.
अपराधसहस्राणि क्षमन्ते प्रभविष्णवः कृतापराधे ऽपि जने महती यस्य वै कृपा
O mighty lord, you forgive thousands of offenses. Even when someone has committed a fault, your compassion is great.
वदन्ति मुनयः सर्वे त्वाम् एव करुणाकरम् रक्षस्वार्तं जगन्मातर् माम् अम्बुजनिवासिनि कमले बालकं दीनम् आर्तं तनयवत्सले
All the sages declare you alone to be the embodiment of compassion, the mother of the world, O lotus-dwelling Kamala. Protect me, a child, helpless and distressed, O you who cherish your offspring.
ततः कृपान्विता देवी श्रीर् अप्य् आह जनार्दनम्
Then, filled with compassion, the goddess Śrī also spoke to Janārdana.
रक्ष नाथ स्वकं भृत्यं गरुडं विपदं गतम् जनार्दन उवाचेदं नन्दिनं शंभुवाहनम्
Protect, O Lord, your own servant Garuḍa, who has fallen into misfortune. Janārdana spoke these words to Nandi, the bearer of Śaṃbhu.
नय नागं सगरुडं शंभोर् अन्तिकम् एव च तत्प्रसादाच् च गरुडो महेश्वरनिरीक्षितः आत्मीयं च पुना रूपं गरुडः समवाप्स्यति
Bring the serpent along with Garuḍa to Śaṃbhu’s presence; by his grace, Garuḍa, seen by Maheśvara, will regain his own form.
तथेत्य् उक्त्वा च वृषभो नागेन गरुडेन च शनैः स शंकरं गत्वा सर्वं तस्मै न्यवेदयत् शंकरो ऽपि गरुत्मन्तं प्रोवाच शशिशेखरः
Having said 'so be it,' the bull, together with the serpent and Garuḍa, slowly went to Śaṃkara and reported everything to him. Śaṃkara, crowned with the moon, then addressed Garutmant.
याहि गङ्गां महाबाहो गौतमीं लोकपावनीम् सर्वकामप्रदां शान्तां ताम् आप्लुत्य पुनर् वपुः
Go to the Gaṅgā, O mighty-armed one, to the Gautamī, purifier of the worlds, bestower of all desires, tranquil; after bathing there, you will regain your form.
प्राप्स्यसे सर्वकामांश् च शतधाथ सहस्रधा सर्वपापोपतप्ता ये दुर्दैवोन्मूलितोद्यमाः प्राणिनो ऽभीष्टदा तेषां शरणं खग गौतमी
You will obtain all desires, a hundredfold and a thousandfold. Those scorched by all sins, whose efforts are uprooted by misfortune, will find their wishes fulfilled; for them, O bird, Gautamī is a refuge.
तद्वाक्यं प्रणतो भूत्वा श्रुत्वा तु गरुडो ऽभ्यगात् गङ्गाम् आप्लुत्य गरुडः शिवं विष्णुं ननाम सः
Having listened to those words and bowed, Garuḍa went to the Gaṅgā, bathed, and then saluted Śiva and Viṣṇu.
ततः स्वर्णमयः पक्षी वज्रदेहो महाबलः वेगी भवन् मुनिश्रेष्ठ पुनर् विष्णुम् इयात् सुधीः
Then the golden-winged bird, with a body like thunder, of great strength and speed, O best of sages, wisely returned to Viṣṇu.
ततः प्रभृति तत् तीर्थं गारुडं सर्वकामदम् तत्र स्नानादि यत् किंचित् करोति प्रयतो नरः सर्वं तद् अक्षयं वत्स शिवविष्णुप्रियावहम्
From that time onward, that sacred place called Gāruḍa grants all desires. Whatever ritual, bathing, or act is performed there with devotion, O child, all of it becomes imperishable, beloved of Śiva and Viṣṇu.
ततो गोवर्धनं तीर्थं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् पितॄणां पुण्यजननं स्मरणाद् अपि पापनुत्
Then Govardhana, the sacred place, destroys all sins, generates merit for ancestors, and even by remembrance removes sin.
तस्य प्रभाव एष स्यान् मया दृष्टस् तु नारद ब्राह्मणः कर्षकः कश्चिज् जाबालिर् इति विश्रुतः
Such is its power, O Nārada, as I have seen. There was a brāhmaṇa farmer known as Jābāli.
न विमुञ्चत्य् अनड्वाहौ मध्यं याते ऽपि भास्करे प्रतोदेन प्रतुदति पृष्ठतो ऽपि च पार्श्वयोः
He does not release the yoke from the oxen even when the sun is at its zenith; he strikes them with a goad on their backs and sides.
तौ गावाव् अश्रुपूर्णाक्षौ दृष्ट्वा गौः कामदोहिनी सुरभिर् जगतां माता नन्दिने सर्वम् अब्रवीत्
Seeing those two cows with eyes full of tears, Surabhi, the wish-fulfilling cow and mother of the world, told everything to Nandi.
