As she, his beloved, in the form of a mare, fled, he, himself in the form of a horse, pursued her wherever Uṣā went, O Bhānu.
Who, under the sway of love's influence, does not act improperly? She crossed the Bhāgīrathī river, other rivers, forests, and groves.
She also crossed the Narmadā and the Vindhya, both facing south, and, agitated by fear, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ reached the Gautamī river.
It is said that the sages are protectors in Janasthāna; thus, she, along with the mare, entered the hermitage of the sages on the Gautamī.
Then the horse, Bhānu himself in that form, arrived; the sage-boys of Janasthāna tried to restrain the horse, and out of anger, the lord of Uṣā cursed those sages.
Because you restrain me, you shall become fig trees.
But by the vision of knowledge, the sages recognized the horse as the lord of Uṣā; joyfully, they praised Bhānu, lord of gods and lords.
Praised by the groups of sages, Bhānu then approached the mare; the mouth of the mare and the horse's mouth joined together.
Recognizing her husband, the daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ emitted seed from her mouth; by their seed, the two Aśvins were born in the Gaṅgā.
There came the hosts of gods, siddhas, sages, rivers, cows, herbs, gods, and also the hosts of luminaries.
The virtuous chariot with seven horses, with Aruṇa as the charioteer of the Sun, along with Yama, Manu, Varuṇa, and also Śani, the son of Vivasvat—
The sacred river Yamunā and also the great river Tāpi, assuming their respective forms, those rivers came there, O sage, filled with wonder.
Amazed to see you, they arrived, as did the father-in-law. Understanding his intention, the Sun spoke to his father-in-law.
"For the delight of Uṣā, who is performing supreme austerity, O Prajāpati, make me mounted on a machine and cut my radiance into many parts—cut it as much as will bring her comfort."
Having said, "So be it," Tvaṣṭṛ then, in the presence of Somanātha, performed the division of the radiance; from then on, that place became known as Prabhāsa.
Where she was united with her husband, in the Gautamī, taking the form of a horse—where the Aśvins were born, that place is called Aśvatīrtha.
That is called Bhānutīrtha, and likewise the hermitage of Pañcavaṭa. Tāpi and Yamunā also came to see their father.
At the auspicious confluence of the rivers Aruṇā, Varuṇā, and Gaṅgā, the gods, each at their own sacred place, assembled there.
There are nine thousand sacred places of great merit; bathing and giving gifts there bestows inexhaustible merit.
By remembering, reciting, or even hearing this, O Nārada, one becomes freed from all sins, becomes righteous, and attains happiness.
The sacred place called Gāruḍa removes all obstacles; I will tell you its greatness—listen attentively, O Nārada.
There was a mighty son of Śeṣa named Maṇināga; out of fear of Garuḍa and with devotion, he pleased Śaṃkara.
Then the blessed Lord, the supreme Maheśvara, being pleased, said to the great serpent: "Choose a boon, O serpent."
The serpent said, "O Lord, grant me freedom from fear of Garuḍa." Śaṃbhu replied, "So be it; you shall be free from fear of Garuḍa."
The serpent, now fearless of Garuḍa, departed; where the younger brother of Aruṇa, who lies in the Milk Ocean, resides near the ocean of milk.
That serpent moves here and there in comfort and coolness; and Garuḍa also dwells there, and he too goes to that place.
Seeing the serpent moving about fearlessly, Garuḍa seized the great serpent and threw him into his own abode.
Binding that excellent serpent with Garuḍa's own bonds, Garuḍa held him fast; at that moment, Nandī spoke to the Lord of the world.
Surely the serpent does not come; he has either been eaten or bound by Garuda, O Lord of the gods. If the serpent were alive, he would not delay.
Having heard Nandi's words and understood, Shambhu then spoke.
